Young Adult Basic Literacy Instructor (P/T)
Queens Library Adult Learner Program seeks instructor for adolescent literacy classes serving disconnected youth ages 16 to 24 with below 6th grade reading level. Classes begin in November and meet in South Jamaica from 10 am to 1 pm. Curriculum is based on balanced literacy and includes the explicit teaching of reading strategies.
Minimum qualifications: BA and at least two years of successful basic literacy and math experience with young adults required; masters degree preferred. Experience integrating reading, writing and math activities into all class activities, which will include numeracy, technology, e.g. computers, video and music; financial literacy; and job readiness.
Salary: $40/hour plus paid 1 hour prep-time.

Program Director, Lehman College Adult Learning Center (F/T)
The Lehman College Adult Learning Center (ALC) is seeking applicants for Program Director. A direct service project of the Institute for Literacy Studies, a City University of New York research and professional development organization based at Lehman College, the Lehman ALC offers ABE, ESOL and GED instruction to adults from Bronx communities. It is known for its commitment to thoughtful pedagogy, support for teachers and students, and collaborative approaches to instruction, curriculum and staff development, and program management.
Duties include overseeing:
- Budget management;
- instructional leadership and staff supervision;
- program operations and data management;
- proposal and report writing;
- relations with government agencies and Lehman College, CUNY, and adult literacy colleagues and organizations.
Qualifications:
- A strong background in adult and/or young adult literacy education in both classroom instruction and program management;
- Expertise and extensive experience in at least three of the following areas: adult literacy pedagogy and theory; staff development; financial management; staff supervision; program and fund development; administrative and office system oversight;
- Familiarity with local and national issues in literacy education and policy;
- Strong communication, organizational, and technology skills;
- Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations and honoring student and teacher strengths and voices;
- Commitment to working collaboratively in all aspects of program life;
- Advanced degree preferred.
Salary: $55,000 – $60,000
