Statewide Outreach Expansion

NYC Outreach
LAC Literacy Referral Hotline staff members are available to make presentations at community events and organizations to inform the public about adult education opportunities in New York State. For example, staff members have participated in such events as:
- Annual Conference for Youth in Foster Care Placement in Manhattan
- Resource Fair for Immigrant Families sponsored by the Queens Borough Public Library
- Brooklyn Head Start teachers meeting
They have appeared on the Bronxnet TV program, El Dialogo en el Bronx, to inform the Hispanic population of the Bronx about literacy programs. Collaboration with the Hispanic Radio Network will help the Hotline to increase public awareness of these programs statewide.
Statewide Outreach Expansion
In our ongoing effort to connect students and volunteers with the adult literacy services, the LAC’s Outreach and Referral unit is currently implementing a statewide initiative to:
- Build awareness about the literacy field and its available services
- Increase awareness of SED-funded literacy resources, including both the Regional Adult Education Networks and local adult literacy programs
- Build relationships among literacy organizations across the state
In the coming months, the LAC will reach out to community-based and social service organizations that are connected to prospective students; spread the word about literacy programming through public service announcements; and attend conferences, health fairs, and other local events to create partnerships and support the literacy community.
