Adult & Adolescent Literacy
The LAC professional development staff assists educators in adult and adolescent literacy programs in identifying resources and incorporating evidence-based practices that can enhance their overall program and their classroom instruction. One or more of three themes underlie all of our half-day and full-day workshops, workshop series, seminars, and intensive institutes:
- Instructional practice
- Educational policy
- Effective program management
Our professional development program promotes participatory learning strategies and helps practitioners better understand these strategies within a research-based methodological context. Topics explored in LAC workshops and institutes include:
- Health literacy
- Instructional technology
- Reading and writing instruction
- English language instruction
- Civics education
- GED preparation
- Assessment and evaluation
- Learning disabilities
- Workforce development
Every year the LAC offers Pre-Service Institutes for new instructors and tutors, as well as several sessions of a Program Managers’ Series for administrators of literacy and ESOL programs. The LAC provides much of its professional development programming in its role as the NYC Regional Adult Education Network. Our Resources page contains links to professional materials the LAC has developed in conjunction with its professional development programs.
The LAC also offers free technical assistance to adult educators who wish to develop new programs, plan an exciting curriculum, or learn about valuable instructional resources.
