LAC Academy Certificate Programs
2011 2012 Academic Year
2011 2012 Academic Year
Did you know that:
- 38% of New York City’s adult residents are foreign-born immigrants in need of English Second Language training.
- 1.6 million adults in New York City are striving readers in need of a high school diploma or help with basic math.
- 33% of New York City’s adult population are considered “functionally illiterate” because they struggle to complete daily tasks such as reading a bus schedule, filling out a job application form or reading a label on a medicine bottle.
Currently, we are only providing enough English Second Language, Adult Basic Education and GED Preparation classes to serve fewer than 60,000 of these fellow New Yorkers in need.
Have you ever thought of launching your own “encore career” as a professional adult educator? Are you a recent college graduate looking to “give back” to your community for a few years before you move into a full-time career? If “yes” is the answer to either of the above questions, think of coming to the LAC Academy of New York City to train to become a professional adult educator.
We encourage new college graduates, encore careerists and everyone in between to take advantage of these programs. It just may turn out to be the most rewarding decision you ever made.
The LAC Academy
Welcome to the LAC Academy. We are happy to have you join us as part of our growing Adult Education Professional Community of Practice.
We are now taking applications for the following five professional certificate programs for the 2011-2012 Academic Year. Most programs are offered in both intensive and extended formats. Some meet on Saturdays, some in the evenings and some Monday through Friday during regular business hours. All include face-to-face modular workshops enhanced by a powerful, instructor-facilitated, interactive online supplement via Moodle, designed to enable cohort groups to morph into permanent professional learning communities of peer mentors.
These are all rigorous programs that provide adult educators a firm foundation in current theory and best practice in the fields of Adult Literacy Education, Second Language Acquisition, TESOL and Applied Linguistics, Program Leadership and Management and College and Career Transition Training.
Professional Certificates of Completion and CEUs (Continuing Education Units) are awarded upon successful completion of each program. The LAC Academy adheres to the IACET (International Association for Continuing Education and Training) standards of Lifelong Learning for the issuance of CEUs.
In addition to the certificate programs listed below, the LAC Academy also offers one-to-three-day workshops throughout the year. Check our catalogue or online calendar of events for the times and dates of the latest listings.
