The Health Literacy & Plain Language Institute
For the past four years, the LAC’s Health Literacy Resource Center has been bridging the health communication gap in New York City by providing specialized training for health care workers to enhance their ability to communicate with adults who have limited literacy skills. Our most recent initiative is the Health Literacy & Plain Language Institute. Participants of the Institute learn strategies for communicating health information more effectively to patients, both orally and in print. The Institute provides tools to assess the readability of written text and to frame health education topics in ways that make them accessible. By the end of the training, participants have a better understanding of how to integrate health literacy strategies into their work with patients.
