Summer 2011

TESLA (Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults) Certificate Program

July 8 July 22, 2011, $1500.00, 200 hours (20 CEUs)

This is a rigorous program that provides adult educators a firm foundation in current theory and best practice in the fields of Applied Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Participants attend 6 training modules or 40 hours of onsite classes supplemented by an additional 120-150 hours of study and reflection online as part of a professional community of practice via Moodle. A 32-48 hour teacher practicum is also completed to qualify for this certificate.

Preparing Students for the GED Using the Common Core State Standards

July 25 August 5, 2011, $650.00, 100 hours (10 CEUs)

This is a program that provides adult educators a firm foundation in the newly created and newly adopted Common Core State Standards for K-12 which will form the basis of the new GED exam.

Participants attend 36 hours of onsite classes supplemented by an additional 90-120 hours of study and reflection online as part of a professional community of practice via Wiggio.

NYSED ALECC (Adult Literacy Education Core Curriculum) Certificate Program

August 8 August 19, 2011, Free to RAEN, $750.00, 100 hours (10 CEUs)

A comprehensive Foundations and Core Concepts of Adult Education program consisting of 7 training modules or 27 hours of onsite training plus a 80-120 hour supplemental online component via Moodle.

Topics covered include: Philosophies of Adult Education, Standards of Adult Education, Digital Literacy, the Teaching of Reading, Numeracy and ESOL to Adults, Indicators of program Quality. Participants are required to complete a final essay on their Philosophy of Adult Education.

Summer Institute for Popular Education

August 29 August 31, 2011, $350.00, 50 hours (5 CEUs)

Paulo Freires work in adult literacy has influenced people working in adult education, community development, community health and many other fields. Freire developed an approach to adult education that links the identification of issues to positive action for change and development.

This three day, 18 hour institute present Freirian philosophy in a hands-on approach for implementation in adult literacy education programs. In this Institute, participants will use the lens of critical pedagogy to examine current educational policies and practices and learn practical ways to use popular education methodologies in and out of the classroom. This institute is supplemented by a post-workshop online component.
