To examine promising practices in youth and adult education, and to develop model GED instructional plans that incorporate these approaches

Day 2 Objectives

  • To share effective instructional practices that we are currently using
  • To examine several promising practices that are being employed in youth and adult education
  • To explore ways of integrating promising practices into our current work

Effective Instructional Practices

  1. Small Group Work (60 min.)
    Have each member of the group display and describe their instructional resource. -What is it? -Who do you use it with? -What do you use it for? -When and where do you use it? -Why do you use it? (rationale) -How do you use it? (process/procedure)
    Based on the “show and tell,” characterize the effective instructional practices members of your group are currently employing. (Record on poster paper)

  3. Silent Reading (45 min.)
    “Integrative Units,” from Methods that Matter (pp. 20 – 35), Harvey Daniels and Marilyn Bizar, Stenhouse Publishers, 1998.
    As you read, keep the following questions in mind: -How do I do this already? -What resonates with me? -What doesn’t make sense to me? -How can I incorporate or adapt this into my practice?
  4. Small Group Discussion (60 min., record key points on poster paper)
    What are the key components of this practice?
    What would be the benefits of integrating this practice to GED instruction?
    What would be the challenges of integrating this practice into GED instruction? How could these challenges be addressed?
    How could you reenvision the instructional practices you described in today’s first activity to fit into this new practice?
  5. Report Out (60 min.)
