Workshops & Institutes

This page contains online components of in-person, hands-on workshops and institutes developed and conducted by the LAC staff for professionals in adult education and ESOL. They were not developed as stand-alone workshops to be delivered online, but most contain activities that can be done any time on the web and can be modified for classroom use.

General

Technology Show ‘n’ Tell (Sept. 2001-June 2002) This series brought together teachers with a wide range of experiences in integrating technology into instruction to share what works, learn about new techniques, and try things out. Each session provided examples of how various technologies can be used.

  • Keystrokes to Voter Education: Elections & Civics Resources on the WWW (October 2000) Participants were introduced to voter information and civics education sites on the World Wide Web that enabled them to develop innovative instructional plans that integrate these resources.
  • World Wide Web Basics for Literacy Instructors (June 2000) Participants learned to navigate the Internet; search the Web for information, curricula and lesson plans; and evaluate Web sites. With this background, they brainstormed about how to use the Internet in class.
  • Pre-Service Institute (May 2000) This online component of an intensive training for new pre-service teachers featured Internet resources for adult educators and students.
  • 101 Things to Do with an Email Account This workshop explored the myriad possibilities for communication that email opens up for both ESOL and BE learners.
  • Surfing for Substance Institute (May-June 2000) The online materials for this three-day intensive training for upstate NY adult educators include all hands-on activities and web-based lesson plans developed by the institute participants.

GED

  • What’s So New about GED 2002? A PowerPoint presentation introducing the content and format of the current GED test and exploring changes in instructional practice
  • GED 2002 Lesson Planning Institute (Spring 2002) Participants explored “promising practices” in adult education and how to apply those practices to preparing learners for the GED.
