Workshops & Institutes
This page contains online components of in-person, hands-on workshops and institutes developed and conducted by the LAC staff for professionals in adult education and ESOL. They were not developed as stand-alone workshops to be delivered online, but most contain activities that can be done any time on the web and can be modified for classroom use.
General
Technology Show ‘n’ Tell (Sept. 2001-June 2002) This series brought together teachers with a wide range of experiences in integrating technology into instruction to share what works, learn about new techniques, and try things out. Each session provided examples of how various technologies can be used.

- Keystrokes to Voter Education: Elections & Civics Resources on the WWW (October 2000) Participants were introduced to voter information and civics education sites on the World Wide Web that enabled them to develop innovative instructional plans that integrate these resources.
- World Wide Web Basics for Literacy Instructors (June 2000) Participants learned to navigate the Internet; search the Web for information, curricula and lesson plans; and evaluate Web sites. With this background, they brainstormed about how to use the Internet in class.
- Pre-Service Institute (May 2000) This online component of an intensive training for new pre-service teachers featured Internet resources for adult educators and students.
- 101 Things to Do with an Email Account This workshop explored the myriad possibilities for communication that email opens up for both ESOL and BE learners.
- Surfing for Substance Institute (May-June 2000) The online materials for this three-day intensive training for upstate NY adult educators include all hands-on activities and web-based lesson plans developed by the institute participants.
GED
- What’s So New about GED 2002? A PowerPoint presentation introducing the content and format of the current GED test and exploring changes in instructional practice
- GED 2002 Lesson Planning Institute (Spring 2002) Participants explored “promising practices” in adult education and how to apply those practices to preparing learners for the GED.
ESOL
- Distance Learning and Technology for Job Skills in the ESOL Classroom (February 2001) Part of the NYCPDC’s Career Development Series, this workshop explored ways to use technology to enhance jobs skills for ESOL learners.
- The Four Skills and Video in the ESOL Classroom (May 2000) Materials posted here include activities on using video with adult ESOL students to stimulate writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills.
Children, Youth, and Families
- Using the Internet to Harness the Power of Questions (November 2001) This workshop, part of CLASP (Creative Literacy in After-School Programs), explores using webquests with children.
- The World Wide Web: A Resource for Theme-based Projects in After-School Programs (May 1999) This workshop designed for after-school educators demonstrated the role the web can play in project-based instruction.
- Rhythm, Verse and Rhyme (March 2000) This training session for the ongoing workshop Creative Literacy in After-School Programs (CLASP) focused on designing web-based poetry lessons.

- Evaluating and Selecting Educational Software and Websites (November 2001) Part of the conference Technology @ Work, sponsored by F.E.G.S., IBM, and the LAC.
- Web Portals for Employment, Career Development, Training, and Labor Market Information & Resources (November 2001) Part of the conference Technology @ Work, sponsored by F.E.G.S., IBM, and the LAC.
- Computer Technology for Job Skills (August 2001) Participants explore the concept of job skills and practice developing lesson plans using technology as a tool.
- Distance Learning and Technology for Job Skills in the ESOL Classroom (February 2001) Part of the NYCPDC’s Career Development Series, this workshop explored ways to use technology to enhance jobs skills for ESOL learners.
Workforce Development and Technology Series This three-part series explored web resources for workforce development.
- Researching Careers and Companies on the Web (October 1999) Teachers and job developers learned how to use the web to help adult learners explore careers and research companies.
- Job Readiness Resources on the Web (February 2000) Participants explored web sites helpful in writing a résumé or cover letter, developing or improving interview skills, and conducting self-assessments in preparation for a job search.
- Making the Most of Online Banks (March 2000) Most online job banks are huge and complex. In this workshop, participants learned which job banks are most user-friendly and reliable, listing jobs that include a wide range of educational backgrounds and work experience.
