The Four Skills and Video in the ESOL Classroom
Video Listening Activity Guide
Activity: Cloze exercise
Purpose/Skills: To develop listening skills
Level: Open
Materials: VCR, video clip
Time: about 20 minutes
Directions:
- Give students a handout with a transcript of the video with some words missing
(cloze - see attached
handout).
- Tell the students to try to fill in the blanks, trying to guess the missing words.
- Then play the video one time and tell the students not to write as they watch.
- After viewing, the students should try to correct the words they think they didn't guess correctly.
- Play the clip one more time for the students to get the words they missed the first time.
- Students should compare their sheets with a partner and/or small group and discuss their answers.
- If necessary, play the video again after the group discussion.
Notes:
- Depending on your students' level, play the clip as many times as it takes for them to get the correct answers.
- In the cloze exercise, it is a good idea to focus on one kind of grammar (e.g. prepositions, action verbs, adverbs, etc.)
