About the Literacy Recognition Awards

Recognizing that the vital work of literacy practitioners often is honored only by their students and immediate peers, the LAC established the Literacy Recognition Awards to focus attention on the accomplishments of individual practitioners and of the field as a whole. With the support of the Bookbinders’ Guild of New York and others, we have carried on this proud tradition for 25 years, honoring over 150 local literacy practitioners during that time. Since the 2004 award ceremony, awardees’ programs have received a library development grant from the Bookbinders’ Guild of New York.

Candidates for Literacy Recognition Awards may be nominated by peers, supervisors, or students. Candidates must be:

  • Program administrators, teachers, volunteers, counselors, staff developers, or support staff members;
  • Employed in a program in basic education, ESOL, math, basic education in the native language, GED, family literacy, health literacy, or a related area;
  • Outstanding in their contribution to their students, their program, or the NYC literacy community.

In the beginning of the year, the LAC solicits nominations for awards. We convene a peer review committee to evaluate nominations and select awardees. The annual Literacy Recognition Award Ceremony is held in late spring.
