Teaching adult literacy isnt easy, but it would be hard to find more rewarding work.

More than two million adult New Yorkers have trouble filling out a standard job application or hospital form. Many of them are recent immigrants. Others received an inadequate education here. By devoting just a few hours a week, you can build a stronger community while helping your neighbors build their skills. Youll have the satisfaction of knowing that youre not only helping individuals but also building a stronger, more prosperous New York.

Hundreds of free literacy programs throughout New York City and State need your assistance. You can become a volunteer instructor or assist in another capacity. To find a nearby program that would welcome your participation:

If you are new to the field and need training, local programs and the LAC can provide it.
