ESOL, ABE, and pre-HSE Lead Instructor F/T

Within the larger scope of formal and informal learning of the Programs & Services Department’s (PSD) Adult Learner Program (ALP) division, the Lead Instructor instructs adult education courses at all National Reporting System (NRS) levels, with the goal of moving participants to Higher Educational functioning levels enabling participants to pursue training and/or post-secondary education as well as see and retain employment to achieve self-sufficiency.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Applies content knowledge and expertise in teaching to drive participant progress and outcomes.
  • Designs and implements lesson plans that ensure students make measurable skills gains, and helps prepare participants for testing including High School Equivalency (HSE) exams.
  • Provides information and support to participants pursuing jobs and/or post-secondary education and training.
  • Develops and uses appropriate tools to measure participant outcomes beyond measurable skills gains.
  • Assists with the coordination of adult literacy programs that provide materials, guidance, and support to adult learners.
  • Administers BEST Plus, Best Literacy, TABE, TASC Readiness and other applicable testing instruments to assess participants’ measurable skills gains.
  • Supports part-time instructors in implementing internal and external curricula including but not limited to: Common Core and College & Career Readiness-aligned curricula through professional development, modeling and coaching.
  • Designs and facilitates professional development sessions to meet funding requirements.
  • Refines lessons learned from professional development workshops to develop recommendations for instructors.
  • Facilitates the distribution of information gained through meetings and observations.
  • Meets regularly with managers and staff to assess the progress of curriculum and professional development efforts, and modify methodologies as needed.
  • Leads Queens Public Library’s Adult Learning Program (ALP) instructors through modeling, training, coaching, and observations in use of effective instructional methods.
  • Leverages best practices in Adult Education principles and instruction to build upon the current curriculum and develops a coaching model that will help teachers achieve instructional outcomes.
  • Informs instructors of current issues related to New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) adult literacy programming.
  • Facilitates conversations with instructors to provide specialized academic instruction, recommends appropriate materials and resources to participants, and provides access to computer-assisted instruction.
  • Collaborates in reviewing, editing and revising curricula as needed.
  • Manages online communications and online support with participating teachers.
  • Establishes a clear pedagogy and set of goals/outcomes that guide the entire instructional staff.
  • Develops curriculum sequences for ESOL, ABE, and pre-HSE resulting in coherent and well-articulated progression across NRS educational levels.
  • Outlines framework for teachers to informally assess themselves and their participants during the process of achieving program outcomes and objectives.
  • Collaborates with faculty and administration to create curricula that allows for flexibility and encourages experimentation/innovation and digital literacy within overall structure.
  • Incorporates interdisciplinary approaches within the curricula when appropriate.
  • Provides direction for procurement of material, training, and fiscal resources to implement curricula.
  • Performs other duties as required.

The schedule for this position will include Saturdays and evenings as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required. Minimum of four years of experience in adult education required. Evidence of mastery and application of adult education principles required.
  • At least one year of experience supervising, training and/or providing professional development to teaching staff required.
  • At least one year of experience with both independent and collaborative curriculum development required.
  • Experience with integrating technology into classroom instruction and for supplemental learning outside of a classroom setting required.
  • Must have knowledge of existing academic standards at the high school and college levels in New York State (e.g. NYS Common Core Learning Standards, college placement exams, etc.).
  • Strong facilitation, training, and professional development skills required.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding, and complex work environment required.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills, exceptional attention to detail, and be highly organized. Strong written, verbal and digital communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Coaching experience a plus.
  • Working knowledge of TASC, TABE Assessment, TASC Readiness Assessment, Best Plus and Best Literacy preferred.

Position Location:  This position will be based in ACT’s New York City office.
Reports to: Director of Workforce Programs
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Employment Type: Contract 
Hours: This role is a Part-Time position (10 hours/week).
Salary: The base hourly rate for this position is $40; additional compensation is negotiable based on experience.

Since its founding, ACT has supported thousands of African immigrants with direct services, trained hundreds of new leaders, and led successful policy campaigns at the federal, state, and local levels that have impacted hundreds of thousands of immigrants. ACT’s African immigrant membership comes from a diverse range of nationalities, cultures, and languages, is religiously diverse, and is predominantly working-class and low-income. Overview: As part of our Workforce Development Program, ACT launched the Healthcare Support Career Accelerator (HSCA), an initiative designed to address career stagnation among African immigrants in healthcare support roles and create pathways to equitable job opportunities within the healthcare industry.

The HSCA program focuses on equipping participants with the English language skills necessary to pursue vocational training in healthcare. Through healthcare contextualized language instruction, participants develop the skills needed to successfully enroll in and succeed in vocational healthcare certification courses.

Position Description: ACT is seeking an experienced ESL Instructor to teach two consecutive cohorts of adult learners in the Healthcare Support Career Accelerator (HSCA) program. The instructor will provide a combination of in-person and virtual instruction over two 3.5-month terms in 2025.

Class Schedule:
Two in-person sessions per week (3 hours each)
One virtual session per week (2 hours)
Course Duration: 14 weeks (3.5 months) per cohort

Key responsibilities include: 
  • Deliver ESL instruction in reading, writing, grammar, and math using the provided curriculum.
  • Design customized lesson plans to meet student needs, ensuring alignment with program goals.
  • Collaborate with the Workforce Programs team to maintain accurate records of student attendance and progress.
  • Assess student progress through formal and informal evaluations.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to enhance student engagement and retention.
  • Integrate technology and blended learning strategies into lessons.
  • Prepare students for standardized assessments and equip them with test-taking strategies.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in Education or a related field. Relevant experience may be considered in place of a relevant degree.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience teaching ESL to adult learners at intermediate to advanced English proficiency levels in group settings, including basic to intermediate math instruction.
  • Experience preparing adult learners for GED and college transition programs.
  • Strong classroom management skills with experience facilitating both large and small groups.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Experience with exam preparation; familiarity with the TABE exam is preferred.
  • Proficiency in using technology for instruction, including virtual platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to foster a supportive, culturally responsive learning environment
  • Experience in GED College prep, higher level of ESOL experience (high-intermediate) + math.
  • Experience incorporating job-readiness-focused English instruction is a plus.

The role involves teaching both theory and hands-on skills using a pre-approved curriculum to address critical workforce needs.

Core Responsibilities: 
  • Deliver a relevant and industry-standard curriculum that prepares learners to pass the NHA’s CCMA certification exam as well as secure sustainable employment. 
  • Effectively blend traditional classroom techniques with online learning tools to ensure a diverse group of adult learners are engaged and successful.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed, including engaging in outreach and  community events to drive program enrollment, as well as managing the inventory of program materials and equipment.

Qualifications: 
  • Active CCMA certification from a respected credentialing body, with a solid professional reputation.
  • Demonstrated success in healthcare training and instruction, with a passion for educating others.
  • Expert knowledge of medical assisting theory, industry best practices, and emerging employment trends.
  • Strong presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and support a diverse group of adult learners.
  • Tech-savvy, proficient in Microsoft 365 and experienced with CRM platforms used by CUNY and Office.
  • Highly organized, reliable, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
