Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) is a 46-year-old nationally recognized South Brooklyn based, non-profit community development corporation and NeighborWorks America chartered member whose mission is to advance economic, social, and racial justice through integrated, community-centered affordable housing, grassroots organizing, policy advocacy, and transformative education, training and services that build the power to shape our community’s future.
FAC’s Adult Education and Literacy unit serves over 1000 adult students per year through ESOL/ELA, ABE, HSE/GED, Digital Literacy and Bridge Programming with access to wrap around services and supports to improve educational and employment outcomes for our students. Integrated into all FAC’s Adult Education programming are case management, career navigation, digital skilling, device lending, financial literacy, civics education and advocacy opportunities aimed to ensure our participants have the skills and resources necessary to fully participate in society and have the opportunity to become leaders in their communities. FAC is a firm believer in growth mindset and popular education.
Responsibilities:
- Work with the Adult Education leadership to develop curriculum that is level appropriate and includes specific goals for individual student growth in a student-centered environment. Enable students to increase their reading, writing, and speaking skills
- Introduce students to community and cultural resources to make students comfortable traveling outside their neighborhood. The Instructor will plan field trips and assist students in engaging in community activities.
- Maintain and update all student records, including personal information, education background and employment history and periodically update test records and employment and education goals, reporting any barrier to education to insure appropriate counseling.
- Attend a minimum of 14 hours of staff development with approved providers and in-house staff.
Qualifications
- B.A./B.S. degree is required.
- At least two years recent and relevant teaching experience with immigrant populations.
- Highly organized with excellent communication skills.
- Certified Best Plus Test Administrator a plus.
Compensation:
$37-40/hour
