Computer Lab Assistant P/T

The Adult Learning Center is located within the Division of Continuing Education at NYC College of Technology.  We provide free English as a Second Language classes and High School Equivalency classes to adult learners. We operate as a community-based organization, providing important services to those in need.
 
We are looking for a part-time Lab Tech to work at our Borough Park, Brooklyn site Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Supporting instructor(s) in assisting beginning and intermediate-level ESL students in the computer lab
  • Providing guidance on how to use the internet for research and general computer operations (typing, printing, saving, and retrieving documents)
  • Willing to assist in other non-computer program functions as needed such as making copies and helping with technology outside the computer lab
The Lab tech should be friendly, patient, interested in interacting and helping students, able to troubleshoot basic equipment problems (printing issues, copier jams, etc.), punctual, and dependable. Should also be willing to communicate clearly/slowly to low-level English learners.
 
Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point), and Web browsers. Experience with Apple operating system as the computer lab is entirely Mac.
 
$22-$25 hourly wage, will be commensurate with experience

Position: High School Equivalency (HSE) Spanish Instructor
Overview
Brooklyn Public Library's Adult Learning program is seeking a dedicated and skilled Spanish HSE instructor to prepare participants for the workforce and/or TASC exam.
The Spanish HSE instructor will teach a 3-hour hybrid class to meet the needs of the participants. Classroom instruction incorporates self-paced, computerized instruction, small group learning exercises, videos, and provides classroom instruction in a variety of fields at several levels.  The ability to develop lessons using extensive writing and reading practice in the content areas of science and social studies using CUNY's HSE curriculum. We are seeking someone who is passionate about making a difference in their community by developing adults to their fullest potential.
 
Responsibilities
  • Deliver effective instruction and have an appetite for utilizing data to improve services
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans, integrating technology
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize participant learning and retention
Qualifications
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree
  • 2+ years of related teaching experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred experience with teaching TASC prep to adults in Spanish
  • Must have familiarity with the current NYS HSE exam (TASC) and CUNY Career Kits
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others to perform well
  • Strong proficiency in the use of office equipment including computers, smart boards, online learning management systems (Khan Academy, etc.)
  • Be willing to participate in professional development workshops/trainings
Schedule: Wednesdays 5pm to 8pm (Hybrid class/distance learning) with online instruction
Spring Cycle - (April 1st  - June 17th )
Location: Pacific Library
This is a hybrid class (3 hours a week), both face-to-face and online learning. There will be 3 hours of classroom instruction and participants would be required to complete at least 3-6 hours of online learning.
This is a contract position. The Salary for this position is $35/ hour.

MRNY’s Adult Literacy Department seeks two highly motivated, organized, dedicated,  and responsible temp/part-time Adult Literacy Administrative  Program Assistants to support the adult literacy program with administrative work during a number of high intensity weeks over the course of every school year.
 
We need individuals willing to work flexible hours on and off throughout the entire year.
 
During the work weeks, temporary staff will work around 15-25 hours a week, more or less, depending on need.

Temp/part time staff need to be available to work primarily in the later afternoons and evenings and/or weekends during most of all  these intense administrative work weeks.
 
The Program Assistant will, among other things:
  • Book intake appointments for classes
  • Test students’ English language skills using Best Plus software
  • Enroll & re-enroll students in classes
  • Enter student and program data into Salesforce
  • Communicate with other staff including teachers and volunteers
  • Review students’ records & email staff with different requests
  • Help fill out any forms needed, answer and make phones calls, & do photocopying, faxing, filing, typing, & updating of waiting lists
  • Attend trainings and meetings as needed
  • Complete other tasks, as needed, to support the department
Requirements:
Must be:
  •  fully bilingual in English and Spanish (spoken and written), and comfortable conducting outreach, intake, and phone calls in Spanish
  • available to provide support in Queens &/ or Brooklyn
  • efficient, communicative, a team player who works well under pressure and a a fast learner who takes initiative and works independently and maintains high standards
 
Must have:
  • An Associate’s Degree in Business Administration or other relevant subject or at least a High School degree or HSE with at least 2 years previous experience working in an office setting.

  • flexibility and the ability to multi-task.

Academic Program Specialist F/T

General Description
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Education Programs and the Director of Special Projects, the Academic Program Specialist assists to oversee day-to-day operational aspects of grant-funded adult education classes, primarily at offsite locations.  The Adult Learning Center (ALC) provides English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Basic Education (BE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation to adult learners in downtown Brooklyn and offsite.  
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with all aspects of student enrollment and placement
  • Coordinating with Data Manager and teachers to calendar, identify, and administer appropriate testing
  • Assisting instructors and counselors with student management
  • Working with instructors to select and implement effective content-based curricula
  • Assisting with student database management and data collection
  • Acting as a liaison between offsite teachers and main ALC office to ensure a smooth flow of communication
  • Coordinating and participating in outreach and student retention efforts, including posting on social media and coordinating student surveys
  • Assisting the Directors in hiring and supervision of staff, program development and planning, and other aspects of program management, as needed
 
Other Duties
  • Ability to work evenings and some Saturday hours
  • Ability to travel regularly to Borough Park, Brooklyn and other offsite locations 
  • Complete tasks as needed to support goals and initiatives of the Division of Continuing Education and the College
 
Qualifications
  • BA in education or related field; MA in TESOL or related field preferred
  • At least three years in program administration, preferably in a grant-funded program
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Relevant teaching experience in ESOL or adult basic education preparation programs
  • Experience with thematic, content-based curricula
  • Ability to work with a computerized database, spreadsheets, e-mail and the Internet
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Well organized; able to prioritize and delegate responsibility
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks, be flexible, creative, resourceful and able to work as part of a team

New York City College of Technology Division of Continuing Education
​Part Time Temporary HSE Instructor Position

Under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Education Programs, the HSE Instructor will provide high school equivalency instruction to daytime students at the Adult Learning Center.  Classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9am – 1pm, beginning on April 15th until June 25th.  Please note this is a temporary position, ending in June 2019.
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Deliver effective instruction in all subject areas: reading, writing, social studies, science, and math, helping to prepare students for the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC)
  • Create a student-centered, engaging learning environment, as required by CUNY   
  • Assess student progress and provide feedback
  • Administer TABE and TASC Readiness exams  
  • Maintain attendance records and communicate with office and counselors on student absences and/or issues
  • Complete 14 hours of professional development through CUNY or Regional Adult Education Network (RAEN) offerings
 
Qualifications:
  • BA or BS in education or related field
  • Minimum two years related teaching experience, preferably in grant-funded literacy programs

YALP Program Associate P/T

Overview
The Program Associate is a grant-funded position within Brooklyn Public Library’s Literacy Program department. The Program Associate will work under the supervision of the Young Adult Literacy Program Coordinator and perform general administrative support for the Young Adult Literacy Program (YALP). Administrative tasks and day-to-day activities include: data collection; data entry, creating and maintaining electronic tracking systems; filing; ordering program materials; programmatic support and other general clerical duties as needed. The program seeks someone with a dynamic personality, with extraordinary people skills and a creative eye; as the position will require overseeing YALP’s social media and web page presence, participating in outreach events and partnering with YALP Coordinator to shore up professional community partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation of reports
  • Data entry in Microsoft Excel and DYCD managed databases
  • General organization and inventory maintenance of program supplies and materials in two sites
  • Receive telephone calls, answer questions from outside patrons, and transfer calls as needed
  • Work collaboratively with BPL’s Marketing Department to maintain current and engaging content on YALP’s BPL webpage and social media
  • Frequent interaction with program staff, students and the public
  • Performs related duties as required
Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree preferred, 2 years of satisfactory full time clerical experience (Associate degree or 60 credits may substitute for one year experience)
  • Knowledge of computer software with proficient use of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, and Access) & Outlook
  • Attention to detail and the ability to organize and execute multiple tasks in a deadline-oriented environment
  • Superior customer service skills, interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Excellent organizational and problem solving skills
This position will work from multiple sites. Pay rate is $25.00 an hour, 15 hour work week. This is a grant funded position through June 30, 2019.
