The Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) is a non-profit, multi-service organization focusing primarily on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth, and aging New Yorkers. We operate at community centers located in the neighborhoods of East Harlem and Yorkville, and seek to deliver programs that are impactful, innovative, and intergenerational.

The Isaacs Center is seeking an experienced, engaging, and results-focused professional to provide 1) focused academic instruction to young adults (16-24 years of age) who are enrolled in Pre-HSE and HSE classes and 2) instructional support to young adults engaged in High School Equivalency and college readiness classes. The Instructor will develop and provide Common Core-aligned instruction in math and science. He/she will work closely with an interdisciplinary team to create learning environments within our Education and Workforce Development Program Model where young adults who have traditionally not found success “in school” will thrive.

Qualifications
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field, MA/MS a plus.
  • Minimum 3 years of successful instruction/facilitation.
  • Evidenced, successful engagement with an at-risk population.
  • Experience with curriculum development, with specific focus on thematic units of study.
  • Superior organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with and working knowledge of the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) the current
  • NYS High School Equivalency Exam (TASC).
  • Dynamic, energetic personality.
  • Evidenced expertise in Common Core-aligned instruction.

Primary Duties:
  • Literacy Leadership and Instruction
  • Teaching reading, writing, and social studies or math and science to cohorts of 25 participants during 20-week cohorts.
  • Develop contextualized curricula. Incorporate current events and discussion. Utilize multi-media formats to present lessons.
  • Provide intensive academic supports in the form of individual and small group instruction.
  • Coordinate and analyze participant assessments to track progress and refine instructional techniques in order to improve student performance.
  • Integrate Employability Skills Framework into daily classroom routine and lessons.

Participant Support
  • Continuously monitor progress of participants receiving intervention services in order to adjust instructional practice and participant grouping.
  • Identify areas for further instructional development of teachers. Plan for and execute professional development.
  • Observe classes and individual participants when necessary to help increase awareness and understanding of participants’ learning needs and to help differentiate instruction for participants with different learning styles or specific learning challenges.

General Program
  • Serve as an integral member of the Education and Workforce Development Team under the supervision of the Coordinator of Academics.
  • Meet routinely with the Coordinator of Academics, the Department of Youth and Community Development personnel and other learning specialists within the division to share information about participants, to discuss program evaluations, to set goals, and to engage in professional development.

ABS/HSE Math Teacher
Adult Basic Skills HSE Preparation Program

LaGuardia Community College is seeking a part-time Math teacher for its ABS/HSE preparation program for a class that meets in 9:30am-1pm, 3 mornings per week to begin in January 2020. Teachers must be comfortable with learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach.  Student-centered learning and critical thinking are central to the program. Teachers need to work closely with counselors and administrative staff to provide support for our students.  
We are seeking a qualified creative educator who has an understanding of adult education pedagogy and experience working with adult students. Candidates should demonstrate a solid knowledge of math, familiarity with the TASC exam, expertise in designing a student centered classroom; BA/BS degree required in teaching or related field, plus a minimum of 2-3 years teaching experience preferably with adults.
Primary Responsibilities include:
  • Providing high quality Math instruction in a learner-centered classroom
  • Developing curricula to include lesson plans and materials based on student needs
  • Incorporating CUNY framework lessons and materials to prepare students to pass the TASC Math exam
  • Communicating with students regarding homework, upcoming events, test dates, absenteeism, etc.
  • Designing a student-centered classroom
  • Utilizing various assessment tools to evaluate and gauging readiness of students for TASC
  • Administering TABE and Readiness tests.
  • Motivating students to persist and succeed in the program

ABE/HSE Math Teacher (P/T)

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Math Teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners.  The class meets two evenings a week for three hours each day. The position begins in September 2019; starting salary is $32/hr. The Lehman ALC is currently hiring for evening classes.
 
Essential duties include:                                                                                  
  • Providing high-quality instruction to help students develop their conceptual understanding and math skills
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster an appreciation of math
  • Collaborating with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and enriching materials
  • Reviewing and communicating class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partaking in in-house teacher meetings and citywide professional development
  • Maintaining class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Participating in student orientations and program-wide events and activities
  • Conducting required assessments including TABE and TASC Readiness exams
  • Having a willingness to learn and become part of the ALC community of teachers and learners

Education Requirements:
Candidate must have Bachelor's degree and relevant teaching and education experience. Prior adult education experience, Master’s Degree a plus.

CUNY Start/Math Start Cooperating Teacher P/T

Job Title: CUNY Start/Math Start Cooperating Teacher (Continuing Education Teacher - Hourly)
Part-time (approximately 25 hours weekly)
The CUNY Start Office of Academic Affairs and participating CUNY colleges work collaboratively to provide students with innovative approaches to developmental education through the CUNY Start/Math Start program. CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development and mentor-based training model. CUNY Start is an intensive program for incoming college students who have earned either a high school or high school equivalency diploma but need to increase their academic proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. Math Start, under the auspices of the CUNY Start program and based on its curriculum and pedagogy, is an intensive 8-week program for CUNY students who want to increase their math proficiency before starting credit-bearing classes. Math Start enrolls students who have been accepted to CUNY but have not passed the math sections of the CUNY Assessment Tests.

CUNY Start/Math Start programs are currently located on ten CUNY campuses: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, College of Staten Island, Guttman Community College (Math Start only), Hostos Community College, Kingsborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College, Medgar Evers College, New York City College of Technology (Math Start only), and Queensborough Community College. The CUNY Start/Math Start Cooperating Teacher position (“Cooperating Math Teacher”) is a paid training opportunity to learn to use a successful, student-centered approach and curriculum with CUNY students who have significant remedial math needs. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Cooperating Math Teacher is responsible for learning and/or supporting the work of an experienced CUNY Start/Math Start Instructor in implementing the CUNY Start/Math Start Mathematics curriculum. The Cooperating Math Teacher will be assigned to one of the ten CUNY campuses with CUNY Start/Math Start programs but may be required to work at more than one of the campuses.

Key duties include the following:
  • Work under the guidance and leadership of the lead teacher;
  • Study lesson plans thoroughly in advance of all classes;
  • Observe classes and assist the lead teacher in and outside of the classroom;
  • Lead classroom activities of increasing length over the course of the training semester;
  • Tutor students outside of class time;
  • Attend and participate in regular professional development meetings;
  • Assist in student conferences, orientation, testing, and recruitment;
  • Attend and participate in team meetings with advisors and teachers;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred;
  • Willingness to travel to multiple CUNY Start campuses.
In addition, the preferred candidate will possess the educational and professional qualifications appropriate to the teaching assignment as indicated below:
  • Teaching experience in adult education, developmental skills, or related discipline;
  • Willingness to implement a set curriculum and pedagogical approach that builds students' conceptual understanding of mathematics beyond their knowledge of procedures;
  • Experience working with diverse learners;
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Proactive and detail-oriented with strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and team member;
  • Ability to receive and incorporate feedback quickly;
  • Computer proficiency using standard academic, administrative and office software programs/applications.
Compensation:
$36.64 per hour (Continuing Education Teacher rate); approximately 25 hours per week, Monday-Friday or Monday-Thursday in daytime programs and Monday-Thursday in afternoon/evening programs; Appointment period: up to approximately six (6) months; a maximum of 530 hours for a full six-month appointment.
Cooperating Math Teachers who successfully complete at least one semester of service in either the CUNY Start or Math Start program are eligible to apply for appointment as a Core or Support Teacher in the CUNY Start or Math Start program, to the extent vacancies are available. The Core positions in CUNY Start are annualized full-time Instructor positions. The Core and Support positions in Math Start are 6-month Continuing Education Teacher positions.

PCAP’s mission is to support low income adults and out-of-school youth as they apply to college, matriculate, and persist through their first year at LaGuardia Community College.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required. Master’s degree in mathematics, secondary mathematics, education, adult education or related field preferred.

The Pre-College Academic Programming Department (www.laguardia.edu/pcap) is seeking two part-time Math Instructors, who will teach morning and evening sections of our math courses for HSE students preparing for college.

Part-Time Math Instructor
Part-time Math Instructors will be responsible for teaching our winter and summer College Prep Math courses as well as our spring and fall Math Immersion courses. The latter are designed to help prepare adult learners for the Math section of the TASC exam so that they may earn their high school equivalency diploma; the former classes are designed to help HSE students place out of remedial math courses on the CUNY CAT exam. Both courses are important in students’ preparation for matriculation. These two part-time positions will be responsible not only for teaching pre-college and pre-HSE math students using an innovative and interactive contextualized curriculum, but will also monitor student progress during the course and tutor as needed.
