Pre-HSE & HSE Instructors Part Time
Start Date: As soon as possible
Hours: Multiple day, afternoon and evening classes.
 Salary: Hourly Rate Commensurate with Experience.
Program Overview: 
HSE Prep classes are a part of COJO Flatbush’s Adult Education division whose objective is to assist individuals to become self-sufficient.
The HSE instructor will lead classes, instruct students in all subjects included on the TASC, develop curriculum and materials, design lessons, maintain an engaging and successful learning environment, collaborate with program staff and maintain program data.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education preferred.  One (1) year teaching experience in pre-HSE/HSE required.  Preference will be given for licensed teachers and qualified candidates with HSE teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of Pre-HSE and HSE curriculum and TASC testing requirements.  Ability to teach all TASC focused subject areas (reading, math, science, social studies and writing).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to incorporating innovative teaching methods including technology.
  • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and capitalize on student strengths.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office.
Responsibilities:
  • Maintain classrooms conducive to learning and facilitate successful participant engagement.
  • Establish clear expectations and encourage student accountability. Implement quality instructional practices, and vary methods of instruction, to encourage participation and retention
  • Teach classes and conduct whole group, small group and individualized instruction.
  • Conduct regular assessment/post-tests to determine advancement.
  • Maintain timely and complete documentation as required.
  • Participate in mandated program and agency meetings.

Pre-HSE Instructor, F/T
Friends of Island Academy (Friends) was founded in 1990 to anchor, support and develop capacity among young people newly released from jail in New York City. Friends is seeking an instructor to teach a pre-HSE class at its Harlem site, lead assessment activities, and support the larger goals of the newly-funded Youth Reentry Network. The class will start in January.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Teach HSE class for 17-24 year olds who have had criminal justice involvement
  • Provide instruction in Social Studies, Science, English Language Arts, Math, and Writing. 
  • Develop learner-centered, participatory lessons, using relevant materials and a project-based approach. 
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans in both math and/or literacy, including group instruction and one-on-one tutoring.
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and in-class assessment.
  • Maintain attendance and assessment data in Friends’ agency-wide database; enter regular notes on student progress.
Qualifications Required
  • Three-five years’ experience teaching in adult literacy/HSE education;
  • Experience working with at-risk youth or justice involved youth;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and an understanding and belief in strengths-based youth development philosophy are needed to succeed in this position.
  • A sense of humor, integrity, flexibility and a profound commitment to the youth we serve;

Brooklyn Public Library is seeking 2 Pre-HSE instructors to teach intermediate level adult basic education classes. Instructor will teach reading, writing and math to adults using curriculum developed by BPL and including CCSS, in a technology rich classroom.
 
Responsibilities: Prepare syllabus that uses library collections and curriculum, Engage students in a rich learning environment; Administer mandated assessment and conference individually with students: Submit attendance and documentation of student progress as required; Participate in regular staff meetings for curriculum and staff development.
 
Requirements: BA/BS required. MA in education a plus; Proven effectiveness with struggling learners; Strong organizational skills required; Comfort with basic technology; 6 hours/week +1 hours for prep and administrative work. Mornings, evenings or Saturday available. Salary: $38 per hour.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Teach HSE class for 17-24 year olds who have had criminal justice involvement
  • Provide instruction in Social Studies, Science, English Language Arts, Math, and Writing. 
  • Support students’ development as readers and writers; teach reading strategies and provide regular, meaningful writing activities
  • Develop learner-centered, participatory lessons, using relevant materials and a project-based approach. 
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans in both math and/or literacy, including group instruction and one-on-one tutoring.
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and in-class assessment.
  • Maintain attendance and assessment data in Friends’ agency-wide database; enter regular notes on student progress.
Lead assessment activities for Friends Jail-to-School Pipeline program
  • Conduct assessments for prospective students – including TABE tests, and informal reading inventories when appropriate;
  • Using TABE scores, informal assessments, school transcripts, and educational history, help prospective students consider their educational options (i.e., regular diploma track, HSE track, etc.)
Support other Pipeline initiatives
  • Help plan and participate in student orientations;
  • Make referrals to other programs as appropriate;
  • Meet with parents, Probation Officers, and other referring agencies
  • Participate with the rest of the Education team in program planning and evaluation
Qualifications Required
  • Three-five years’ experience teaching in adult literacy/HSE education;
  • Experience working with at-risk youth or justice involved youth;

​Certified ABE/Pre-HSE & HSE Instructors (P/T) needed to work with Youth (ages 17-24)  in the Bronx and Harlem, NY 

SoBro is seeking dynamic part-time instructors for our ABE and Pre-HSE classes to work with a diverse group of young adult learners ages 17 – 24. The position begins in October 2016; starting salary range is $30 - $40/hr. Classes are generally held in the mornings.
Essential Duties Include:                                                                              
  • Providing high-quality theme-based instruction to help students achieve either educational gains or prepare for the TASC exam in all five (5) competency areas. 
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster a desire for learning 
  • Collaborate with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and engaging materials
  • Review, communicating and document class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partake in department meetings and professional development
  • Maintain class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Conduct required assessments including TABE and TASC Readiness exams
Education Requirements:
Candidate must have Bachelor's degree and relevant teaching and education experience. A Master’s Degree a plus.

Position Summary:
Responsible for teaching and coordinating classes in Fortune Society’s Pre - High School Equivalency (Pre - HSE) class- Young Adult Literacy Program (YALP), implementing a participatory, project based approach to teaching reading, writing, and math skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach reading, writing, and math classes from basic literacy through Pre-HSE;
  • Conduct intake orientations/interviews for new students and help place them in classes;
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student progress, including standardized tests and alternative assessment;
  • Maintain regular communication with students’ counselors in other Fortune departments;
  • Develop curriculum, assessment, and tutor training materials;
  • Enter electronic attendance data, maintain student attendance logs, progress and test folders;
  • Contribute data to internal and external reports on the development and progress of Fortune’s educational program;
  • Contribute to the development and expansion of the education program;
  • Participate in staff meetings and other staff development activities;
  • Assist in planning special events; and
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Familiarity with Adult Basic Education and/or Pre-HSE;
  • Proficiency in computer applications, such as MS Word and Excel;
  • Familiarity with models of popular literacy education;
  • Experience with students involved in the criminal justice system;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to engage and motivate students and volunteers;
  • Commitment to developing innovative teaching methods; and
