PER DIEM ESOL ADULT EDUCATOR
HOURS: CLASS HOURS ARE TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS, 8:30-11:30, OTHER HOURS VARY (STAFF MEETINGS, PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT, PLANNING)
PAY RATE: $30/HOUR START: IMMEDIATELY
The Family Health Centers at NYU Langone’s mission is to improve the health of underserved communities by delivering high-quality, culturally competent health care and human services. Recognizing that health depends upon an individual’s economic, educational and employment status, FHC’s Department of Community-Based Programs offers an extensive continuum of family strengthening and community development programs to address the broader needs of the community, including adult education; case management and supportive services; mental health services; early childhood centers; and community service opportunities.
Position Summary:
The ESOL Adult Educator is responsible for curriculum development, instruction, assessment, coordination with support services, and record keeping. Instructors also attend monthly staff development sessions and work at registration and orientation sessions throughout the academic year. Instructors must be creative and dynamic with a commitment to learner-centered, participatory education. ESOL instructors certified to administer the BEST Plus exam preferred. Bilingual (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish) a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Develop student centered curriculum
- Ensure that lessons are logically sequenced, level appropriate, and address varying learning styles and needs.
- Develop strategies and lesson plans that integrate job readiness, financial literacy, digital literacy and health literacy activities into curriculum.
- Provide the program director with a course description and outline.
- Maintain a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning
- Ensure that all students participate in lessons; elicit responses from less vocal students; work one on one with students when necessary.
- Administer pre and post test Best PLUS 3.0 assessments
- Accumulate, record, and report student data regarding participation, progress, and outcomes in a timely manner.
- Work with support services staff to ensure that students' extra curricular needs are met.
- Attend required orientation/development days as well as monthly staff development sessions
Requirements:
- B.A. required
- At least two years of experience in adult education
- Demonstrated digital literacy expertise
- Strong Interpersonal skills
- Time management skills are essential.
- Appreciation for the unique needs of participants
- Interest in and awareness of working with underserved communities
- Demonstrated commitment to a philosophy that is participatory, data-driven, and values problem solving
