Advanced Strategies in ESOL
With the support of the Office of the Mayor, the New York City Council, and the Department of Youth and Community Development, the Literacy Assistance Center plans to offer the Advanced Strategies in ESOL Certificate Program at no cost to all participants who are selected for 2020.

This multi-session program is an opportunity for ESOL teachers to increase their knowledge base by deepening their understanding of such areas as backward design, project-based learning, lesson planning, reflective practice, and particular elements of ESOL (vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, etc). The exact topics of each session will be selected by the group members. The program includes peer observation, an individual classroom-based project, and approximately 30 hours of out-of-class work.
In the sessions, teachers will also have an opportunity to present issues and challenges they are experiencing in the classroom and receive support and guidance from both the instructor and their peers.

Participants must attend all sessions.
Note: The LAC is offering two courses this Spring, Advanced Strategies in ESOL and TEALL. Applicants may only apply to one of these two programs.
Judy Trupin is the director of the TESLA Certificate program and lead ESOL professional developer for the LAC. She has been teaching in the TESLA certificate program since 2009 and created the TEALL program in 2014. 2020 marks the initial offering of the Advanced Strategies course, which Judy has developed drawing on her experience leading the LAC’s Reflective Teachers Forum. An ESOL adult educator for more than 25 years, Judy has worked as a teacher, curriculum developer, teacher educator, and administrator. She has taught all levels of ESOL from basic literacy through advanced. A nationally certified trainer for the BEST Plus assessment, she holds New York State K-12 ESOL certification and an M.S. in Teaching ESOL.
