Advanced Strategies in ESOL 

With the support of the Office of the Mayor, the New York City Council, and the Department of Youth and Community Development, the Literacy Assistance Center plans to offer the Advanced Strategies in ESOL Certificate Program at no cost to all participants who are selected for 2021.

Program Description 
This multi-session program is an opportunity for ESOL teachers to increase their knowledge base by deepening their understanding of such areas as backward design, project-based learning, lesson planning, reflective practice, and particular elements of ESOL (vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, etc). The exact topics of each session will be selected by the group members. The program includes peer observation, an individual classroom-based project, and approximately 30 hours of out-of-class work.

In the sessions, teachers will also have an opportunity to present issues and challenges they are experiencing in the classroom and receive support and guidance from both the instructor and their peers.  


Admission requirements
Admission to this program is by application. It is open only to individuals who
  1. have either a TESOL certificate OR a Bachelor's or Master's degree in TESOL and
  2. are currently teaching adult ESOL in NYC. ​

Session Dates
All sessions will be remote in 2021. Classes will meet on Tuesdays from 2 pm to 5 pm on the following dates:
March  2, 9, 23
​April 6, 20
May 4,  11
Participants must attend all of the above sessions. The two dates below are optional:
May 18, 20 

Instructor Bio 
Judy Trupin, Senior ESOL Fellow, was previously the director of ESOL certificate programs at the Literacy Assistance Center. She continues to work with the LAC, sharing her expertise on curriculum development and research-based strategies for teaching ESOL. Judy has been an ESOL adult educator for nearly 30  years, and has worked as a teacher, curriculum developer, trainer, and administrator. She has taught all levels of ESOL from basic literacy through advanced.  Judy is a nationally certified trainer for the BEST Plus assessment, holds New York State K-12 ESOL certification and an M.S. in Teaching ESOL, and is a certified yoga instructor.
