Workshops
Literacy Instruction in the Multilevel Classroom
Dates: 1.17.23
Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Description: By nature, adult literacy classes are multi-level, since adult learners come from all walks of life, are of all ages and ranges of educational experience, and bring to the table an array of academic skills. Unlike children who all graduate from one grade to the next with a predictable range of skill sets and knowledges bases, adult learners may have been away from school settings for years or decades, have had their formal educations interrupted at very different stages, have amassed disparate life skills as they've worked a variety of jobs, and have such challenges as difficult work schedules, children or elderly relatives to care for, and unidentified cognitive learning challenges. This workshop will offer strategies and approaches to structuring lessons, instructional routines, staggered activities, and to project-based learning ideas that will enable instructors to adequately address a variety of learning needs.

The result can be tedium, boredom, lack of engagement, and lack of learning what needs to be known. In this two-part series, adult educators will collaborate to explore various methods for teaching grammar to students that will engage their interest and provide real-world contexts – such as resumes, letters of interest, applications, letters of complaint, and other every-day tasks – for which a growing level of grammar mastery is required. Furthermore they will learn strategies for designing activities and lessons that are themselves grammar-rich. During the second session, instructors will meet in roundtable style to share and discuss grammar instruction activities they've used since the first meeting. Registrants are required to attend both sessions.

Description: Applied digital learning and distance education has challenged and changed the way educators create successful and equitable opportunities for accessible learning. It has changed the way we assess learning development, helped overcome circumstances of disproportionate access to learning content and supplemental resources, and broadened our means of communication with learners in and out of our physical classrooms. However, we also know that even while you read this description, there is a tool, a resource, or a short-cut available, created, or conceptualized that could satisfy or catalyze our approach to online or hybrid teaching. Now the new challenge is to identify which digital tool(s) we should integrate, and maybe even which digital tools no longer fulfill the requirements my class now needs. Attend this three-part series on how to identify and integrate familiar and maybe some new digital tools for your learning environment. Registrants are required to attend all sessions. Register once for all the sessions.

Description: Nearly a quarter of the way into the 21st century, adult learners face a seemingly endless barrage of information, mis-information, means to virtually connect and interact with the world of users, and access to an ever-growing array of digital sources that are at once reliable & unreliable. More than ever, there is a need for sophistication around what sources to trust, which to avoid, where to gather the best news and information, and critical thought around the digital noise that surrounds us. In this 3-part series, adult educators will explore the underpinnings of digital literacy, examine sources of news, fake news, and propaganda, review social media outlets, and determine ways of helping adult learners become critical thinkers and users of the technology that shows no sign of slowing down. Through the lenses of history and society, and using case study approaches to broaden understanding, adult educators will develop ways to apply their knowledge of our digital lives to classroom norms, practices, and content, and to ultimately help create a more informed citizenry. Registrants are required to attend all sessions.

Description: The work around Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education (CRSE) is imperative. At its core CRSE embraces students’ identities as a source of knowledge and gives representation to more diverse voices and to marginalized communities. Compared to the extensive work done in K-12 and adult higher education, the breadth of research for community-based organizations and non-formal educational settings is limited (Jones, J. 2021). This institute will serve as a vehicle for critical reflection, enhancing adult educators’ knowledge, tools, and pedagogical strategies to create culturally responsive environments in the adult education classrooms.
Topics addressed by this institute will include:

Description: The phrase "Digital Literacy Skills'' is mentioned a lot these days but what exactly are digital literacy skills and how do we go about including them in our instruction? In this two-part series we will start by reviewing a digital literacy skills framework and discussing what resonates with our work in adult education. We will begin to create a scope and sequence of digital literacy skills together. As homework, participants will review our group scope and sequence and use it to develop their own, considering how digital literacy skills can be included in the lessons they already plan to provide. In the second session of the series we will review the individual scope and sequence homework and discuss different teaching routines that can support digital literacy skill practice integrated into content instruction. Registrants are required to attend both sessions. By registering for the January 26th session, you are also registered for the follow-up session on February 2nd for 2:00 to 4:00pm.
- Session 1: The 5W's for Identifying Technology: Finding the right digital tools does not have to feel like finding a needle in a haystack, but sometimes it does. With the digital world ever growing and with new tools created or conceptualized each day, it is important to consider why one tool can be more beneficial than another, and how they can fit in your classroom. In this session, we will consider and determine our criteria for finding the right digital tool that fits your classroom needs.
- Session 2: Methodology for Integrating Technology in the Classroom: Alright - now we have found the tools, but how can we start gradually introducing this tool to our students? This session will explore how we can use the same criteria for finding the right digital tools to determine our plan of action for incremental exposure and a better learning experience.
- Session 3: Transferring Your Applied Digital Skills to Your Students: Once you and your students have become comfortable with your chosen digital tool(s) - a pattern will emerge where students will rely on their existing digital literacy skills to complete their work. In this session - we will plan and organize an approach to scaffolding digital skills for optimal learning experience!

- Theoretical foundation
- Bias and microaggressions
- Building classroom culture
- Pedagogical practices
- Planning anti bias and antiracist instruction
- Participatory practices
- Culturally responsive assessments
