Free Writing: Help Students to Establish and Enjoy a Writing Routine

Description: Learn how to help your students unleash their inner writer, at any level. Establishing a regular writing practice increases fluency, the flow of ideas and most importantly helps students build confidence. While this session will mostly look at fluency-oriented activities with minimal teacher correction, we will also give tips for accuracy-oriented writing prompts with teacher and peer correction to fulfill curriculum requirements. A resource Padlet will be provided.

Popular Education for Social Justice: An Introduction for Adult and Community Education Teachers and Staff

Description: Popular Education is an approach to adult and community education that centers students’ lived experiences by building curriculum and instruction around critical issues in their communities, and by engaging students in projects to address these issues. This 3-part training series will engage teachers/staff to learn about popular education theory and practice; explore techniques for identifying and analyzing community issues; generate instructional activities that develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and engage students around questions of economic and social justice; examine examples of popular education lessons/units; and develop a framework for designing projects with our classes.

Valuing Diversity and Appreciating Differences (2-Part Series)

Series Overview: The goal of this 2-part series is to raise awareness about the diversity in adult education using two different lenses: 1) through the model of cross-cultural paradigms; and 2) through the eyes of a learning disabled student. At the end of this 2-part series, participants will gain an appreciation of the differences among staff and students and reflect on what their new learning/insights compel them to change and how they plan to implement these changes in their own practice.

Description: In this first session, participants will enhance their awareness and ability to value and appreciate differences by learning about three models of Cross-Cultural Paradigms (The Iceberg Model, the Hall Model, and Kohl’s Model for Comparing and Contrasting Cultures). They will also learn to use the D.I.E. Technique as a tool to overcome pre judgments and stereotyping. They will have an opportunity to reflect on how these models and techniques could be utilized in their own classroom settings to foster the value of diversity among their students.

Session 2: Looking at Challenges Through a Pupil’s Lens

Putting YOU into YouTube

Description: YouTube offers a wealth of resources, but you can still spend hours looking for the “perfect” video. Why not make the perfect video yourself? Creating YouTube videos for your own class can be a time-efficient way to directly meet your students’ needs - by helping them to keep learning outside the classroom or by modeling how to use new tech tools. This session will give participants step-by-step practice making a video with Screencast-o-matic and uploading it to YouTube.
Note: This workshop will demonstrate how to upload videos using a laptop - not a mobile device. Please have a Google account (e.g. Gmail, Google Docs, etc.) before the session begins.

We Speak NYC Online: Tech tools and instructional strategies for teaching remotely

Description: Are you already familiar with We Speak NYC but looking for new ways to use our educational resources in your virtual classroom? Would you like some quick and easy tips on leveraging Zoom features to enhance ESOL activities and engage your learners? In this workshop, we will highlight online We Speak NYC resources and Zoom tools that can be used to improve your students’ learning experiences. We will also provide strategies and resources for differentiating instruction to reach low-level learners. Workshop participants will receive a packet of digital material, including assignments you can use in your online classes.

Certificate Programs
Foundations of Adult Education Certificate Program
Dates: 2.19, 2.26, 3.12, 3.26, 4.9, 4.23, 5.7, 5.21, 6.4, and 6.18

Description: This multi-session certificate course is appropriate for all ESOL, ABE, and HSE instructors who are interested in developing their knowledge and skills as adult education practitioners. Participants will attend 30 hours of online synchronous classes in addition to 80 hours of study and reflection online as part of a professional community of practice. In addition to giving participants an introduction to principles of adult literacy and theories of learning, the Foundations of Adult Education course (F.A.E.) will cover topics such as: Lesson planning and assessments, Creating an inclusive learning environment, Strategies for giving students feedback, Course design and classroom management tips, Compassionate communication for educators and Translanguaging for multilingual learners
The course will provide participants with the core knowledge necessary to be an effective adult educator in the virtual and physical classroom; opportunities to share ideas and experiences, network with peers, and try out new strategies and methods with immediate feedback; and a space to reflect on and examine their own teaching practices.

Advanced Strategies in ESOL Certificate Program
Dates: 3. 2, 3.9, 3.23, 4. 6, 4.20, 5. 4, 5.18, and 5.25
Time: 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Description: Advanced Strategies in Teaching ESOL is an opportunity for ESOL teachers to increase their knowledge base by deepening their understanding of such areas as backward design, project-based learning, lesson planning, reflective practice, and particular elements of ESOL (vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, etc). The exact topics of each session will be selected by the group members. The program includes peer observation, an individual classroom-based project, and approximately 30 hours of out-of-class work. In the sessions, teachers will also have an opportunity to present issues and challenges they are experiencing in the classroom and receive support and guidance from both the instructor and their peers.

In addition to giving participants an introduction to principles of adult literacy and theories of learning, the Foundations of Adult Education course (F.A.E.) will cover topics such as: Lesson planning and assessments, Creating an inclusive learning environment, Strategies for giving students feedback, Course design and classroom management tips, Compassionate communication for educators and Translanguaging for multilingual learners
The course will provide participants with the core knowledge necessary to be an effective adult educator in the virtual and physical classroom; opportunities to share ideas and experiences, network with peers, and try out new strategies and methods with immediate feedback; and a space to reflect on and examine their own teaching practices.

Advanced Strategies in ESOL Certificate Program
Dates: 3. 2, 3.9, 3.23, 4. 6, 4.20, 5. 4, 5.18, and 5.25
Time: 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Description: Advanced Strategies in Teaching ESOL is an opportunity for ESOL teachers to increase their knowledge base by deepening their understanding of such areas as backward design, project-based learning, lesson planning, reflective practice, and particular elements of ESOL (vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, etc). The exact topics of each session will be selected by the group members. The program includes peer observation, an individual classroom-based project, and approximately 30 hours of out-of-class work. In the sessions, teachers will also have an opportunity to present issues and challenges they are experiencing in the classroom and receive support and guidance from both the instructor and their peers.

Audience: ESOL teachers who are currently teaching adult ESOL in New York City and have a preliminary credential in TESOL (certificate or degree).
