Each of the Academy's academically rigorous, certificate-bearing courses combine engaging, in-person classes with asynchronous, online learning activities. The aim of the LAC Academy is to provide adult educators with:
  • Increased employment opportunities
  • Increased teacher efficacy, confidence, and readiness
  • Strengthened professional networks
  • A sustained community of peers

Course offerings vary by season and include:
(Click a program link to learn more about it.)

Academy Students
Since 2008, the LAC Academy has matriculated over 900 students. An independent evaluation of the Academy conducted in 2013 reported that 95% of participants stated that our courses made them more effective, confident, and better-prepared teachers. LAC Academy programs serve as initial and advanced training for:
  • Anyone considering a teaching career or interested in volunteering in Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE), or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs
  • Adult education professionals wishing to specialize or maintain credentials or to simply stay current on what’s happening in the field of adult education
  • Adult literacy teachers, tutors and program managers
  • Staff developers
  • Union training managers
  • Recent college graduates
  • Encore careerists
  • Providers of other direct services to adults functioning at low literacy levels
“Community is important. Whenever I was coming to the LAC it was meeting the other teachers talking about their experiences that was most helpful.”
– LAC Academy Graduate

Digital Literacy

The LAC Academy's online learning platform, Moodle, offers participants the opportunity to build on their digital literacy skills. Skills covered in Modules 1, 2, and 4 of this assessment are particularly important in an online learning environment. Each module begins with very basic tasks, but stick with it, they get more challenging! Assess your Digital Literacy skills here
