Hiring: FT Adult Literacy Administrative Assistant for Queens-based Adult Literacy classes
 
Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains in Westchester County. With a membership of 23,000+ low-income New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.
 
MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our Adult Literacy Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), computer literacy, citizenship preparation and in-school and after-school youth programs.  Our Community Organizing Projects help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. And our Legal and Health Services Departments provide direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) civil rights issues.
 
Our Adult Literacy Department in Queens runs an average of 15 different ESOL and Civics classes every cycle for 3-4 cycles a year.
 
Current Opening:
MRNY’s Adult Literacy Department seeks a highly responsible, organized, and dedicated full-time Program Assistant to do intensive data entry and other tasks to support the adult literacy program.  The Program Assistant will be responsible for entering data in multiple databases, helping with student outreach, intake, testing and other administrative tasks to support MRNY’s English, Citizenship and other classes as needed.
The Program Assistant will, among other things:
·      Enter student and program data into ASISTS, Connect, Capricorn and Salesforce databases
·       Run and analyze data reports and take action to improve data for funders
·       Communicate with IT staff for Salesforce troubleshooting
·       Provide training and coordinate/communicate with other staff including teachers, volunteers and other agency partners
·       Attend training and meeting as needed
·       Review students’ records, email staff with different requests, answer and make phones calls, do photocopying, faxing, filing, typing,  and updating of waiting lists.
·       Pre and post test students’ English language skills using Best Plus software and Civics skills using the AACE
·       Call students for intake and testing appointments, for re-enrollment, to follow up on absences, etc. if/as needed
·       Enter notes in our database or Google forms about new class candidates, attendance, call notes, outreach work, scheduled appointments, test scores, etc.
·       Carry out registration and re-enrollment of students
·       
·       Communicate via phone, email, etc. with team members and across the organization as needed to keep work moving smoothly
·       Complete other tasks, as needed, to support the department.
Requirements:
  •  Eligible to work in the US
  •  Associate’s degree in Business Administration or related area of study
  •   At least 2 years previous experience doing data entry and administrative work in an office setting
  •   Must be fully bilingual in English and Spanish (spoken and written), and comfortable communicating in Spanish
  •   Database experience
    • Strongly  preferred:
    • specific experience with ASISTS, Connect, Salesforce and Capricorn databases
    • experience not just entering data, but running and analyzing data reports and taking action to improve data quality and outcomes
 
Job Competencies:
  •  Ability to type at least 35 wpm and demonstrated computer experience using office programs including, Salesforce, ASISTS, Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.
  • Must have a strong ability to multi-task, meet deadlines as needed, learn fast, take initiative and work independently with high standards.
  • Must be a trustworthy individual, with the flexibility to work different days and hours, including occasionally during the evening and on weekends. Must be efficient, communicative, a team player and work well under pressure; Occasionally must be willing to support our work in Brooklyn  or Staten Island, as needed.
 
Compensation: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.  MRNY offers a generous benefit package including health insurance and 401K.

SYEP Education Coordinator

Program description:The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) provides New York City youth between the ages of 14 and 21 with paid summer employment for up to six weeks in July and August. Participants work in entry-level jobs in a variety of industries. SYEP also provides workshops on job readiness, career exploration, financial literacy, and opportunities to continue education and social growth.
In collaboration with the New York City Department of Education (DOE) and the Department of Youth and Community Development, Phipps Neighborhoods is launching a school-based SYEP model that will strengthen New York City’s (NYC) workforce development system and help young people gain the support, educational credentials, and skills needed to succeed in today’s economy. This is an exciting opportunity to partner with high schools and help build lifelong career skills.
Position Summary:
The Education Coordinator work closely with Phipps Neighborhoods and School staff members to carry out the Project-Based Learning tasks related to the school-based SYEP program.  This is a 6-month, temporary position. 
Position Overview:
  • Develop and facilitate Project-Based Learning curriculum and activities for 14 and 15 year old students.
  • Coordinate curriculum design and implementation.
  • Manage daily program curriculum and assigned administrative duties; coordinate staff schedules.
  • Identify appropriate methods and tools that will enable participants to be successful in their project-based learning.
  • Ensure that lesson plans are robust, comprehensive and engaging.
  • Enhance the curricula through organizing field trips, guest speakers, and panel discussions.
  • Infuse the use technology throughout the program.
  • Lead groups to clarify meeting content, objectives and to establish ground rules that govern behavior.
  • Address problems or issues that come up and work to resolve conflicts when they arise
  • Work collaboratively and professionally with a varied group of colleagues
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Program Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Science or Social Studies field is preferred.
  • NYS Teaching Certificate strongly preferred.
  • 3 years’ experience working in the field of youth development, or youth workforce development, and developing project-based learning experiences.
  • Experience working with students of varied ages, levels, and diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong background in youth development and an assets-driven perspective on how to work with disconnected youth.
  • Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum.
  • Proficient in basic computer applications (Outlook, Word, Power Point).
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills required; proven problem solving and interpersonal skills; proven ability to work with multiple deadlines and multiple priorities.
  • Must be flexible, enjoy working with at-risk young adults and have strong initiative to work in a team.
  • Flexibility to work morning, afternoon or evening hours.

ESOL Instructor P/T

ESOL Instructor (part time): (Staten Island vacancies)
New York Public Library
The main responsibilities for the instructor are to work with Adult Learning Center Assistant Director and the Hub Manager to implement the goals and activities of the adult education program.  To teach and assist adult ESOL students in improving their English skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing).  To instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals.

To assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records:
  • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL.  NYS TESOL certification preferred.
  • Experience teaching and/or working with adults.
  • Instruct assigned English classes for 2 hour sessions, twice a week in 10 week cycles
  • Prepare a syllabus and daily lesson plans for each session/class based on student needs/interests, and the prescribed curriculum.

  • Maintain daily attendance records

As the nation’s sixth-largest library system, Brooklyn Public Library is the borough’s most democratic civic institution. Patrons of all backgrounds can access a wide range of educational, career, cultural, and civic resources at their local library, from citizenship classes for new Americans to oral history workshops.

We are looking for a New Americans Project Coordinator who is responsible for the coordination of volunteer-led programs for immigrant inclusion and integration across the system. The coordinator will schedule, implement and evaluate a series of citizenship instruction classes to prepare adult permanent residents for the civics and English proficiency components of the naturalization test.

Primary responsibilities include recruiting, training and supervising over 60 volunteer-led immigrant integration programs, implementation of citizenship classes, training and placement of Interns and connecting program participants with legal service providers.

​The Coordinator will be also responsible for data collection and reporting of program outcomes.
