SUNY Queens EOC (administered by York College, CUNY) seeks three part-time adjunct lecturers for Pathways to College to work remotely and eventually in person at its Jamaica location.  The Center serves an adult, diverse, multi-ethnic population of students.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required or Master’s degree preferred;
  • Proficiency in remote learning instruction;
  • Knowledge of Google Classroom and Zoom proficiency; as well as,
  • Experience working with adult learners and recognizing various learning styles.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct courses online during day hours;
  • Establish clear goals and expectations;
  • Develop lesson plans and maintain a cooperative learning environment;
  • Monitor students’ performance and attendance for required reporting systems;
  • Keep students and administrators informed of student progress by sharing collected data; and
  • Provide feedback to students during office hours.

The CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, the University’s community colleges, New York City College of Technology, and the College of Staten Island work collaboratively to provide students with an innovative approach to developmental education.

CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development, and mentor-based training model. Instruction

CUNY Start may deliver instruction in multiple formats: in-person, online or as hybrid classes that are both online and in-person in Spring 2022. Online instruction may be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous teaching that is determined at the discretion of program management. Online work may entail instruction on such platforms as Blackboard, Zoom, and other remote instructional tools that are available and approved by the University and which support the goals and practices of the program.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The CUNY Start Writing Assistant is a part-time College Assistant who will work as a member of the Reading/Writing team, supporting the work of the Core teacher in a CUNY Start classroom.
Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
  • Read the CUNY Start Reading/Writing Curriculum closely, and become familiar with CUNY Start learning procedures, assignments, and goals;
  • Attend portions of the CUNY Start Reading/Writing class, and support the CUNY Start Core teacher as appropriate;
  • Respond in writing to student papers and essays;
  • Facilitate and/or support small groups including circulating throughout the class to observe and guide student discussions;
  • Tutor CUNY Start students individually and in small groups;
  • Participate in CUNY Start team meetings about students’ progress;
  • Participate in training activities led by the CUNY Start Professional Development Coordinators for Reading and Writing;
  • Perform duties assigned by the Core teacher, including taking attendance, keeping track of student assignments, and setting up online and in-person classrooms.
QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will possess the educational and professional qualifications as indicated below:
  • Experience responding to academic writing and working with non-traditional college students
  • Ability to assist students and perform duties online and in-person
  • Master’s Degree preferred
COMPENSATION
  • $21.34 per hour for approximately 20 hours a week;
  • Health benefits may be possible after 3 months of successful employment;
  • Anticipated appointment period: Late August, for approximately 12-15 weeks and/or as funding allows.

During periods of remote teaching, CUNY Start Teachers remain responsible for maintaining high-levels of student engagement and enacting the CUNY Start curriculum with fidelity to the program model.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The CUNY Start Cooperating Reading/Writing Teacher position (“Cooperating R/W Teacher”) is a paid training opportunity to learn to use a successful, student-centered approach and curriculum with CUNY students who have significant remedial English needs. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Cooperating R/W Teacher is responsible for learning and/or supporting the work of an experienced CUNY Start Instructor in implementing the CUNY Start reading/writing curriculum.
Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
  • Work under the guidance and leadership of the Lead Teacher;
  • Study lesson plans thoroughly in advance of all classes;
  • Observe classes and assist the Lead Teacher in and outside of the classroom;
  • Assist students as they plan, revise, and edit essays, and respond to writing with suggestions for revision;
  • Facilitate student groupwork and guide group interactions;
  • Lead classroom activities of increasing length over the course of the training semester;
  • Attend and participate in regular professional development meetings;
  • Assist in student conferences, orientation, testing, and recruitment;
  • Attend and participate in team meetings with advisors and teachers;
  • Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will possess the educational and professional qualifications appropriate to the teaching assignment as indicated below:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred;
  • Four years of teaching experience in adult education, developmental skills, or related discipline strongly preferred;
  • Experience working with diverse learners;
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Proactive and detail-oriented with strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and team member;
  • Ability to receive and incorporate feedback quickly;
  • Computer proficiency using standard academic, administrative, and office software programs/applications;
  • Experience with online instruction via MS 365, Blackboard, or other collaborative online platforms; comfortable with both online and in-person teaching modalities;
  • Willingness to travel to multiple campuses after the initial training semester and to train both in person and online.
COMPENSATION
  • $39.66 per hour as a Continuing Education Teacher (CET). Please note that the CET rate is subject to future collective bargaining increases;
  • Approximately 25 hours per week, depending on holidays and campus calendar; Monday-Friday in daytime programs; Monday-Thursday in afternoon/evening programs.
  • Appointment period: approximately six (6) months from appointment date; a maximum of 530 hours for a full six-month appointment.

Cooperating RW Teachers who successfully complete at least one semester of service in the CUNY Start program are eligible to apply for appointment as a Core or Support Teacher in CUNY Start, to the extent vacancies are available. The Core positions in CUNY Start are annualized full- time Instructor positions.

  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster a love of reading and learning

Morning Part-time TASC/HSE Language Instructor Needed
CAMBA, Inc. seeks a part-time HSE language instructor to work at its Education Center (885 Flatbush Avenue – Brooklyn, N.Y.) The class will meet in the morning from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, Tuesday through Thursday. 

Candidates must have a B.A/B.S. in education or a related field; Masters preferred. Candidates must have taught ABE/GED/TASC preparation for at least 2 years and must have experience administering TABE and working with low income and/or ethnically diverse populations. For this position, the ability to effectively teach (1) English mechanics, usage, sentence structure, (2) public speaking, and (3) essay writing is a must.
