P/T ESOL Teacher
BPL’s adult literacy and learning department is seeking ESOL teachers to teach beginning and intermediate level English language for its WIOA funded classes.
Responsibilities
  • Be part of an academic team responsible for presenting standard American English language to English-language learners
  • Engage students in a rich and engaging learning
  • Prepare syllabus and lesson plans that uses library collection and curriculum
  • Administer standardized assessments to all ESOL learners
  • Complete administrative duties in a timely manner
  • Provide feedback and support that encourages the learners to develop both language skills and their learning autonomy
  • Participate in library and industry professional development and training
Qualifications
  • BA/BS required, certificate in TESOL or experience instructing in ESOL a plus
  • Knowledge of TESOL methodology and techniques; experience with multicultural, adult learners
  • Experience administering standardized assessments
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning, instructional software, and distance learning platforms preferred
  • Comfortable with database management, network management, desktop publishing, and Internet navigation applications
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills
  • Ability to solve problems with a strong commitment to adult literacy and learning
  • Must be able to work varied schedule, including evenings and weekends 
  • Salary: 38 per hour
Please note that this position is grant-funded, part-time position. Hours for this position are 6 hours/week +1 hour for administrative work.

P/T ESOL Program Assistant
BPL seeks an energetic and highly organized Program Assistant to join its English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) team.
 
Responsibilities
  • Provides administrative support to staff and ESOL clients
  • Prioritizes work according to departmental needs; determines workflow problems and develops solutions
  • Prepares documents, spreadsheets, & presentations as assigned including manuals, brochures, reports, budgets, and PowerPoint illustrations
  • Provides computer basics instruction and workshops; introduce students to workplace technology skills
  • Engage students in a learning community and facilitate reading and writing instruction
  • Assist with student assessments - BEST Plus/BEST Literacy, checklists and portfolios
  • Maintain and update clients E-records, student attendance and student progress reports
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Minimum of High School Diploma and/or Equivalent required
  • Strong technology skills, software applications, including Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of instructional software, Learning Management System platforms, social media, wikis, and blogs and web-based databases
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, ASISTS and/or Google docs a plus
  • Strong customer service and organizational skills
  • Must be able to work varied schedule, including evenings and weekends 
This is a grant-funded, part time position with a schedule of 19 hours per week at $15 per hour

2 or 3 mornings a week from 8:15-11:15 AM.
 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Teachers are responsible for instructing classes, writing student progress notes, keeping attendance records, testing and assessing students, integrating technology into classwork, administering the Best Plus Test, attending professional development sessions, participating in staff meetings, and other duties as required by the coordinator.

Associate Director of Adult Learning for the Queens Library
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Within the larger scope of formal and informal learning within the Programs & Services Department’s (PSD), Adult Learning division, the Assistant Director of the Adult Learner Program (ALP) plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises Queens Library’s Adult Learning Centers (ALCs) and Young Adult Literacy Services. This position serves as a key member of the Adult Learning leadership team and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the curriculum, instruction, recruitment, registration, orientation, advising graduation, and other activities at the ALCs. Reports to the Director of Adult Learning.
 
The Assistant Director of the Adult Learner Program works closely with Adult Learning staff and the larger Programs & Services Department to ensure that services are integrated and collaborative. Ensures best practices, procedures, and reciprocal referrals are made across Adult Learning and PSD to best meet the needs of the diverse and changing populations of Queens. The Assistant Director of the Adult Learner Program works with Community Library Services and other departments to identify or resolve issues related to facilities. The Assistant Director remains current with trends and best practices in adult literacy and plans for proposed changes in instruction, funding, and reporting requirements that could impact the Centers.
  • Provides leadership in the development of division goals and objectives, and oversees the development of policies and procedures to improve, enhance, and expand ALP services.
  • Recruits, supports, manages, and evaluates the performance of ALC Managers and the Senior Manager of Young Adult Literacy Services. Coordinates professional development and program improvement activities.
  • Provides guidance, mentorship, and staff development.
  • Works with ALP supervisors to ensure that staff adhere to established policies and procedures as well as library and grant expectations and timelines.
  • Key contributor to the ongoing planning, implementation, development, direction, review, and evaluation of curriculum and instruction.
  • Ensures that Centers provide high quality instruction in ESOL, Adult Basic Education, pre-High School Equivalency, and HSE through classes, small group tutoring, and independent learning activities including computer-aided instruction.
  • Coordinates development, refinement, implementation, and evaluation of standardized curricula relevant to the changing needs of customers and funding sources.
  • Evaluates and recommends programs, standards, policies, and procedures to ensure alignment with Library and funder guidelines.
  • Oversees the implementation of system-wide online learning options.
  • Manages grant and operating budgets.  Revises and monitors budgets to meet current library needs and funder guidelines. Ensures that ALC Managers are appropriately tracking budgets and spending funds according to established timelines.
  • Works closely with the Director of Adult Learning and Queens Library Foundation to apply for various funding opportunities.
  • Oversees the implementation of applicable grants for all Adult Learning Centers. Manages timelines and ensures all library and grant outcomes are met.
  • Works closely with the Adult Learning Data Coordinator to ensure that all ALP data is accurate, up-to-date, and in compliance with Library, state, and federal requirements.
  • With an emphasis on NRS and NYRS outcomes, ensures that ALP staff are meeting data and outcomes timelines and targets.
  • Regularly uses data to improve instruction and update curricula to ensure achievement of expected outcomes.
  • Prepares analyses, reports, projections, and evaluations on a monthly, annual and on-going ad hoc basis.
  • Leads tactical and operational decision making for the Adult Learner Program and within the framework of the Library’s strategic plan, creates short to long-term goals and strategies for ALP services.
  • Has oversight of collaborative work across divisions and departments to support development, implementation, improvement, and operation of new Adult Learner Program services.
  • Takes a lead role in implementing training, workshops, and learning experiences that increase acquisition of positive educational outcomes and/or workforce readiness skills by ALP students.
  • Ensures programming quality based on enrollment/retention via coordinating internal and external audits and community needs assessments as well as addressing and resolving all issues to ensure overall positive participant satisfaction. 
 
The schedule for this position will include Saturdays and evenings as required.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's Degree in Education or a related field.
  • At least (5) five years of experience working with adult learners from diverse backgrounds who face academic and socio-economic barriers.
  • At least (3) three years of related supervisory experience.
  • At least (2) two years of experience in instructional leadership.
  • Must possess a strong working knowledge of WIOA and ALE mandates. 
  • Must have the ability to provide leadership to and stimulate cooperation and teamwork, including the ability to hold others to high standards while offering support and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Must have experience developing standards-based curriculums and implementing programming designed to increase student engagement, retention and success.
  • Must have the ability to evaluate instructional programs.
  • Must have knowledge of Common Core and College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate excellent presentation, facilitation, organizational, and communication skills. 
  • Proficiency in analyzing and developing strategic responses to data.

Job Title: CUNY Start/Math Start Cooperating Teacher (Continuing Education Teacher - Hourly)
Part-time (approximately 25 hours weekly)

CUNY Start is an intensive program for incoming college students who have earned either a high school or high school equivalency diploma but need to increase their academic proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. Math Start, under the auspices of the CUNY Start program and based on its curriculum and pedagogy, is an intensive 8-week program for CUNY students who want to increase their math proficiency before starting credit-bearing classes. Math Start enrolls students who have been accepted to CUNY but have not passed the math sections of the CUNY Assessment Tests.

CUNY Start/Math Start programs are currently located on ten CUNY campuses: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, College of Staten Island, Guttman Community College (Math Start only), Hostos Community College, Kingsborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College, Medgar Evers College, New York City College of Technology (Math Start only), and Queensborough Community College. The CUNY Start/Math Start Cooperating Teacher position (“Cooperating Math Teacher”) is a paid training opportunity to learn to use a successful, student-centered approach and curriculum with CUNY students who have significant remedial math needs. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Cooperating Math Teacher is responsible for learning and/or supporting the work of an experienced CUNY Start/Math Start Instructor in implementing the CUNY Start/Math Start Mathematics curriculum. The Cooperating Math Teacher will be assigned to one of the ten CUNY campuses with CUNY Start/Math Start programs but may be required to work at more than one of the campuses.

Key duties include the following:
  • Work under the guidance and leadership of the lead teacher;
  • Study lesson plans thoroughly in advance of all classes;
  • Observe classes and assist the lead teacher in and outside of the classroom;
  • Lead classroom activities of increasing length over the course of the training semester;
  • Tutor students outside of class time;
  • Attend and participate in regular professional development meetings;
  • Assist in student conferences, orientation, testing, and recruitment;
  • Attend and participate in team meetings with advisors and teachers;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred;
  • Willingness to travel to multiple CUNY Start campuses.
In addition, the preferred candidate will possess the educational and professional qualifications appropriate to the teaching assignment as indicated below:
  • Teaching experience in adult education, developmental skills, or related discipline;
  • Willingness to implement a set curriculum and pedagogical approach that builds students' conceptual understanding of mathematics beyond their knowledge of procedures;
  • Experience working with diverse learners;
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Proactive and detail-oriented with strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and team member;
  • Ability to receive and incorporate feedback quickly;
  • Computer proficiency using standard academic, administrative and office software programs/applications.
Compensation:
$36.64 per hour (Continuing Education Teacher rate); approximately 25 hours per week, Monday-Friday or Monday-Thursday in daytime programs and Monday-Thursday in afternoon/evening programs; Appointment period: up to approximately six (6) months; a maximum of 530 hours for a full six-month appointment.
Cooperating Math Teachers who successfully complete at least one semester of service in either the CUNY Start or Math Start program are eligible to apply for appointment as a Core or Support Teacher in the CUNY Start or Math Start program, to the extent vacancies are available. The Core positions in CUNY Start are annualized full-time Instructor positions. The Core and Support positions in Math Start are 6-month Continuing Education Teacher positions.
