ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher (P/T)

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners.  The class meets Tuesdays from 6-9 PM. The position begins in January 2019.
 
Essential duties include:                                                                                  
  • Providing high-quality theme-based instruction to help students develop their reading and writing skills
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster a love of reading and learning
  • Collaborating with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and enriching materials
  • Reviewing and communicating class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partaking in in-house teacher meetings and citywide professional development
  • Maintaining class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Participating in new student orientations and program-wide events and activities
  • Conducting required assessments including TABE and TASC Readiness exams
  • Having a willingness to learn and become part of the ALC community of teachers and learners

Education Requirements:
Candidate must have Bachelor's degree and relevant teaching and education experience. Prior adult education experience, Master’s Degree a plus.

Morning Part-time TASC/HSE Language Instructor Needed
CAMBA, Inc. seeks a part-time HSE language instructor to work at its Education Center (885 Flatbush Avenue – Brooklyn, N.Y.) The class will meet in the morning from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, Tuesday through Thursday. 

Candidates must have a B.A/B.S. in education or a related field; Masters preferred. Candidates must have taught ABE/GED/TASC preparation for at least 2 years and must have experience administering TABE and working with low income and/or ethnically diverse populations. For this position, the ability to effectively teach (1) English mechanics, usage, sentence structure, (2) public speaking, and (3) essay writing is a must. Applicants who have experience in computer-assisted instruction, who are self-starters, who are highly organized, and who are willing to attend professional development training on site or off site are preferred.

The CUNY Office of Academic Affairs and participating CUNY colleges work collaboratively to provide students with an innovative approach to developmental education through the CUNY Start Reading/Writing program.
 
CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development, and mentor-based training model. CUNY Start is an intensive program for incoming college students who have earned either a high school or high school equivalency diploma but need to increase their academic proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. 
                                                                                                                  
CUNY Start programs are currently located on eight CUNY campuses: Borough of Manhattan   Community College, Bronx Community College, College of Staten Island, Guttman Community College (Math Start only), Hostos Community College, Kingsborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College, Medgar Evers College, New York City College of Technology (Math Start only), and Queensborough Community College.
