Hot Bread Kitchen seeks a part-time temporary Language Lab Assistant for our New New Yorkers program.

Key Responsibilities

Provide classroom support to ESOL instructor in carrying out daily lesson plans to a class of 20-25 students.
Ensure that the classroom is organized.
Maintain a supportive and respectful learning environment conducive to language practice and skill development.
Monitor and facilitate interactive language activities and conversational workshops.
Assist students in navigating language learning materials and resources. Offer guidance on effective language learning strategies and techniques.
Review and grade class assignments.
Work with ESOL instructor and other program staff in assessing student progress.
Attend regular staff meetings to report on student issues and progress.
Use allotted administrative hours to prepare for classes.

Skills & Experience:

Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission.
Minimum 1 year teaching or teaching assistant experience in ESOL setting.
Spanish-speaking and/or French-speaking proficiency required and fluency preferred.
Proactive, resourceful and results-oriented.
Excellent organization skills.
Strong communicator with ability to work with a diverse group of bi/multilingual adult learners.

Schedule and Compensation:

Compensation: $20/hour
Approximately 79 hrs/cohort including:
Assisting ESOL Instructor with approximately 75 hours of contextualized ESOL instruction to up to 25 members enrolled in the Culinary Training Program (15 hrs/week, less some weeks)
Classes are held in-person at the Manny Cantor Center in Manhattan
Monday-Friday 1:45pm - 4:45 pm
Program calendar:
- June 17th - July 23rd (1:45pm - 4:45pm)
- July 24th - July 26th (1pm-2:45pm)
- Holidays (no class): June 19, June 27, July 4 and July 5

Location and hours
This position requires regular in-person attendance at City Harvest in Brooklyn starting on June 17, 2024. The class hours are 1:15-4:45pm, five days per week for a six-week period, with the need for some flexibility in work hours. We follow New York City and State guidelines on COVID-19 vaccination and masking.

Compensation (teaching and prep time)
This is a 6-week position (approximately 15 hours per week) . The compensation will be $20 an hour. This is a temporary position and is not eligible for health benefits or holiday pay.

CUNY START Writing Assistant College Assistant – Hourly

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
CUNY Start is an intensive pre-matriculation program that helps CUNY associate degree-seeking students with significant remedial needs increase their academic proficiency in English and/or in mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. The CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, the University’s community colleges, New York City College of Technology, and the College of Staten Island work collaboratively to provide students with an innovative approach to developmental education.

CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development, and mentor-based training model. Instruction

CUNY Start may deliver instruction in multiple formats: in-person, online or as hybrid classes that are both online and in-person in Spring 2022. Online instruction may be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous teaching that is determined at the discretion of program management. Online work may entail instruction on such platforms as Blackboard, Zoom, and other remote instructional tools that are available and approved by the University and which support the goals and practices of the program.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The CUNY Start Writing Assistant is a part-time College Assistant who will work as a member of the Reading/Writing team, supporting the work of the Core teacher in a CUNY Start classroom.
Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

Read the CUNY Start Reading/Writing Curriculum closely, and become familiar with CUNY Start learning procedures, assignments, and goals;
Attend portions of the CUNY Start Reading/Writing class, and support the CUNY Start Core teacher as appropriate;
Respond in writing to student papers and essays;
Facilitate and/or support small groups including circulating throughout the class to observe and guide student discussions;
Tutor CUNY Start students individually and in small groups;
Participate in CUNY Start team meetings about students’ progress;
Participate in training activities led by the CUNY Start Professional Development Coordinators for Reading and Writing;
Perform duties assigned by the Core teacher, including taking attendance, keeping track of student assignments, and setting up online and in-person classrooms.

QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will possess the educational and professional qualifications as indicated below:

Experience responding to academic writing and working with non-traditional college students
Ability to assist students and perform duties online and in-person
Master’s Degree preferred

COMPENSATION

$21.34 per hour for approximately 20 hours a week;
Health benefits may be possible after 3 months of successful employment;
Anticipated appointment period: Late August, for approximately 12-15 weeks and/or as funding allows.
