Teaching
  • Teaches one 5-week Computer Skills Class
  • Teaches a 5-week Adult Basic Education (ABE) Class
  • Conducts individual tutoring sessions as needed for low literacy, vocational training, pre-ABE, or HSE
  • Coordinates with Adult Education Manager in regards to High School Equivalency candidates
Administrative
  • Provides career, vocational, and educational counseling by determining trainees’ educational and professional qualifications and transferable skills through completing Education and Training intakes with trainees
  • Facilitates monthly Education and Training orientations as needed
  • Participates in a workforce development sector team
  • Attends departmental and facility meetings
  • Performs other duties related to the goals of the Education and Training Team as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Commitment to The Doe Fund’s mission, purpose, and values
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Must be able to teach 4 evenings per week from 6-9pm
  • Must be willing to travel to all residential facilities (namely Bushwick, Harlem)
  • 6 months-1 year of experience teaching adults in a non-traditional setting, preferably including teaching computer skills (e.g. browsers, gmail, Word, Excel, etc.) and/or Adult Basic Education

CLIP Tutor P/T

Tutoring Position for Spring 2019
 
The CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) at Borough of Manhattan Community College provides intensive English language instruction to adult immigrants who plan to matriculate in a CUNY college. We are looking for a tutor who will work under the direction of classroom teachers to assist students in all four language domains. Responsibilities may include:
  • helping students, one-on-one, to revise their essays for grammar, mechanics, and content
  • working with students individually and in groups on reading skills
  • honing oral presentation and pronunciation skills
  • assisting students with annotation during read-alouds and taking notes during lectures
  • assisting students with PowerPoint presentations and word processing skills
 
Tutors may also be asked to facilitate whole-class instruction and group work, as well as grade student assessments. Applicants must be flexible enough to work with faculty members with a variety of teaching styles.  Prior experience working with ESL students and some graduate coursework in TESOL/Applied Linguistics preferred. Good knowledge of grammar instruction, essay structure and writing strategies.
 
Hours:  Able to work during our morning program, 9am to 2:30pm
 
Pay starts at $16 an hour depending on experience.

Title:  Part Time Evening Intake Clerk for Astoria site PROGRAM: Adult Literacy
Reports to: Program Director

Summary:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Pre-Test and Post-Test students using BEST Plus 2.0                                       
  • Places students according to English Proficiency Level          
  • Assists students in filling out enrollment forms        
  • Enters information in ASISTS  data base on a regular basis             
  • Enters data on Google docs on a daily basis
  • Checks data base  for accuracy and consistency on a bi-weekly basis
  • Attends BEST Plus 2.0 refresher workshops or recertification workshops
  • Provides information about the program to potential students and organizations
  • Assists with registration and outreach for the program
  • Contacts students who stop coming for more than two sessions
  • Creates folders for all enrolled students and verifies that folders contain all required forms. Candidate also verifies that the information is written correctly on the forms.
  • Ensures that each student who has achieved the bench mark hours have a portfolio.
  • Provides teachers with programmatic support like: placing students in different levels or schedules upon conferencing with the teacher.  Provides teachers/instructors with teaching materials like markers, erasers, pencils, calculators, etc.
  • Other duties as required by the program
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be BEST Plus 2.0 certified and have a working knowledge of ASISTS Data Base. Candidates must be flexible and willing to learn programs procedures quickly. Candidates must be able to work independently, have good communication skills, and must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Google Docs.

Education and/or Experience required:
  • High School Diploma Required, Associates Degree preferred and at least one year of experience working with ASISTS and administering BEST PLUS 2.0
  • Language Skills:
  • Bilingual in Greek   or Spanish is a plus. ​

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: Founded in 1973 as the first community-based social service agency targeting the Korean population, The Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, Inc. (KCS) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) multi-social service organization supported by government agencies, foundations, corporations and concerned individuals. The objectives of KCS are to develop and deliver a broad range of social service programs to meet the various needs of the community. In order to achieve these objectives, KCS provides various professional community service programs in the areas of Community, Aging, Workforce Development and Public Health.
 
ABOUT THE POSITION: KCS is seeking a part-time dynamic individual to instruct and train adult immigrants and New American students within the KCS’ ESOL/Adult Literacy department. Our Adult ESOL Program is funded by New York City – Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and New York State – Office of New Americans (ONA) by contractual agreement. All ESOL instructors will be paid only the instructional hours he/she teaches under the contract requirements. 
 
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Planning, preparing and delivering ESOL training to adult immigrant and New American students through the Office for New Americans Opportunity Center or the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development
  • Managing classroom paperwork – including student attendance sheets, progress notes, student works, make-up session schedules, etc.
  • Assisting the Program Coordinator with student recruitment events
  • Working with volunteers and teaching assistants for in-class support and supplemental learning opportunities
  • Attending professional development sessions and monthly Literacy Program staff meetings
  • Other duties as assigned by the ESOL/Adult Literacy Director
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, English, or related field, with a certificate in TEFL, TESOL,
    or related English field or Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year teaching/classroom experience
  • BEST Plus Test Administration Certificate preferred
  • Experience with the immigrant community and adult students useful

Part-Time HSE Instructor (evening)
​
The Adult Basic Skills/Bridge to College and Careers Department at LaGuardia Community College, LIC, NY, is seeking a part-time instructor to deliver comprehensive high school equivalency instruction for the ABS High School Equivalency Preparation Program: 3 evenings per week.
Salary: $36.64 per hour

The instructor will teach 9 hours per week in the evening from 6-9pm. The instructor will be provided with resources and curriculum outline designed to help nontraditional adult students develop their reading, writing, oral, basic math, and critical thinking skills in preparation for the high school equivalency (TASC) exam, admission to college, or vocational training and/or advancement in the workplace, and will be expected to develop complimenting supporting lessons, materials for differentiating instruction and learning assessments as needed.

Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • Design and deliver High School Equivalency preparation curricula in all subject areas
  • Develop and utilize theme-based interdisciplinary adult education curricula
  • Incorporate CUNY Framework and Career Kits into the curricula
  • Deliver instruction to high school equivalency students enrolled in Adult Basic Skills HSE Program
  • Mandatory participation in position-related professional development
  • Establish program benchmarks in collaboration with Director
  • Implement data collection, entry, and reporting procedures for student assessments, attendance and other areas each semester
  • Develop a community of learners in the classroom 
  • Design a student-centered classroom
  • Communicate with students regarding homework, up coming events, test dates, etc.
  • Submit Lesson logs weekly
  • Utilize assessment tools to assess readiness of students for TASC
  • Motivate participants to persist and succeed in the program
  • Maintain attendance in the classroom
  • Evaluate and conference students on their progress 
  • Other related duties as assigned

Core Competencies/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required. Master’s degree in secondary education, literacy, reading, mathematics, adult education or related field strongly preferred
  • Minimum 3 years teaching experience in adult education, secondary or post-secondary education classrooms
  • Demonstrated understanding and use of inquiry-based and constructivist pedagogies
  • Demonstrated use of interdisciplinary approach to math instruction and literacy instruction
  • Familiarity with College and Career Readiness Standards & high school equivalency assessments
  • Experience working as a member of a project team or department that includes, but is not limited to: teachers, faculty, support professionals and administrators
  • A commitment to supporting college readiness & success for underserved students
  • Ability and skill to motivate and lead non-traditional learners to persist and thrive in new collegiate and academic environment
  • Experience working with a diverse adult or out-of-school youth student population, preferably in a higher education setting
  • Experience using digital learning management systems to complement in class instruction
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), learning management system platforms, email, and social media platforms
