CUNY Start Cooperating Math Teacher (Multiple Positions)
 
CUNY Start is an intensive program for incoming college students, who have earned either a high school or high school equivalency diploma, and need to increase their academic proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. 


The CUNY Start Cooperating Math Teacher position is a paid training opportunity to learn to use a successful, student- centered approach and curriculum with CUNY students who have significant remedial math needs. In general, Continuing Education Teachers teach Continuing Education courses and perform related work. 

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Cooperating Math Teacher is responsible for learning/supporting the work of a Lead Math Teacher in implementing the CUNY Start Mathematics curriculum. Successful Cooperating Math Teachers may be eligible to apply for future Core Math Teacher positions at several CUNY campuses in the following semester.

Director of Adult Education

The flagship of the City University of New York, City College offers outstanding teaching, learning. and research on a beautiful campus nestled in  Harlem.  The College is an integral part of the civic, urban and artistic energy of New York and inseparable from its history.  The Continuing and Professional Studies department (CPS) shares the mission as it strives to offer training for the community and beyond serving nearly 7,000 students a year.  

CPS is seeking to fill the grant-funded position of Director of Adult Education.  The Adult Education program offers English to speakers of other languages (ESOL), and preparation for the high school equivalency credential to approximately 400-500 students yearly. The Director of Adult Education will work in tandem with CPS’s other Program Directors to develop supported entry programs into college and careers.

Specific duties include adherence to grant requirements, development and implementation of creative, dynamic, programming and course offerings; enhancement of skills of instructors and students through program and staff development, including new educational technology and existing learning tools/aids; budget oversight; standardization of curriculum; recruitment; data oversight, including employment and academic outcomes. Must be experienced, energetic, innovative and compassionate adult educators and leaders with a proven track record in successful strategies for instructional development; student assessment, evaluation and outcomes; fiscal management and staff performance.  

Qualifications
  • Experienced educator with strong commitment to adult learners and administrative and fiscal management expertise.
  • Master’s degree in relevant field preferred or commensurate experience.
  • Extensive experience in adult literacy field and the National Reporting System (NRS).
  • At least five (5) years classroom experience in adult basic education and five (5) years supervisory experience; or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the responsibilities.
  • Significant experience managing programs, particularly programs involving multiple partners, funding and the use of data to manage program evaluations and budgets.
  • Knowledge of current workforce needs related to education/training options.
  • High degree of computer proficiency and comfort with interpreting and using data for program improvement.
  • Ability to be flexible. Prioritize and manage multiple programs.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Senior Director of Adult Services F/T

Senior Director of Adult Services (Full-Time) – Brooklyn, NY

Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow is a 32 year old not-for-profit organization operating out of multiple locations that provides education, employment and training services to disadvantaged youth and adults.  The Senior Director of Adult Services, as an Executive staff member, will be responsible for overseeing Adult Education and Literacy (ESOL, ABE, HSE prep), Immigration and Adult Employment Services across multiple sites.  The position is Brooklyn-based but travel will be required to other OBT locations.

Specific responsibilities include ensuring that all contractual requirements are met; supervising administrative and instructional staff; creating annual class schedules and coordinating sites; designing and implementing standardized curricula for all instructional areas; overseeing budgets; collaborating with other staff regarding budgets, recruitment, referrals; liaising with government and private funders; working closely with Employment and Retention staff to assure that quality placements are being made and retention goals are being met; assuring that all program data is being entered into internal and funder databases in a timely and accurate manner; oversight of the maintenance of one program facility; representing the agency and the CEO at all relevant meetings and serving on all external committees related to workforce development.

HSE Instructor P/T

The Adult Basic Skills (ABS) department in the Adult and Continuing Education Division at LaGuardia Community College/CUNY is seeking a part-time experienced adult education instructor for its high school equivalency (HSE) program. 

ABS  is seeking a dynamic, hard working educator who has experience teaching diverse adult, non-traditional high school equivalency populations at a variety of ABE levels, including HSE in preparation for the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC); experience in delivering quality mathematics instruction a must; as well as reading and writing in HSE-related disciplines (social studies, science, etc.) is required. The instructor will adapt student-centered and contextualized curricula designed to help adult students to develop their reading, writing, math, and critical thinking skills, including the incorporation of technology, and materials for differentiating instruction and informal needs assessments, as needed.
Position in part time evening and/or morning to begin September 2015.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor of Arts/Science degree, plus at least three (3) years adult education or non-traditional teaching experience, along with relevant adult education professional development required.

Union Settlement Association is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages. We bring education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. 

We are seeking a Director of Adult Education, responsible for managing all the education programming Union Settlement offers adults, including, but not limited to HSE, ESOL, and citizenship classes. Responsibilities include curriculum development, course evaluation and scheduling, budget preparation, fiscal management, supervision and staff development, record keeping, and reporting to funding agencies. The Director is a member of the agency’s senior management team and serves as a strategic partner in planning and implementing the future vision for the agency.  The Director must be both a hands-on worker and an excellent manager, supervising a staff of approximately 10 part-time staff.

The ideal Director of Adult Education candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field preferred. 
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) fluency strongly preferred.
  • Significant experience managing adult education programs, with at least 5 years’ supervisory experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced, challenging, and constantly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing adult education populations.

Full-time Science Teacher in the South Bronx
Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30, subject to change depending on program needs                

Grace Outreach is seeking an excellent and experienced HSE instructor to motivate, teach and prepare adult women to take and pass the new High School Equivalency examination called the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC). This is a full- time position teaching science. A creative and energetic team player is desired to manage and teach a diverse group of women in our South Bronx location.  The ideal candidate will:

  • Provide daily instruction in science, focused on building the appropriate skills necessary for students to pass the TASC/ High School Equivalency examination
  • Possess and demonstrate positive classroom management skills in an adult educational setting
  • Work in a nonjudgmental manner with a diverse student body that has a wide range of educational abilities and motivations
  • Operate as part of a team to help women increase their ability to learn and continue their education beyond the TASC/HSE
  • Participate in staff meetings and other staff development activities
  • Provide appropriate training, management and support to student tutors and volunteers
  • Manage a multitude of details including tracking daily attendance, monitoring data on student performance, and calling students
  • Possess and demonstrate maturity, good judgment, kindness, assertiveness, reliability, and consistent contributions to enhancing our already-positive organizational culture and vibe

Minimum Qualifications:  B.A. or M.A. in education (or a related field). Adult/high school/GED/TASC teaching experience strongly preferred. Previous experience or specialization in teaching science highly desired.

Part Time ABE/HSE Teachers

The Community League of the Heights is seeking an educator who is student centered and has experience teaching ABE/HSE at a variety of levels to engage, educate and empower students to pass the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC.) The educator must have experience in mathematics instruction; reading and/or writing in HSE-related disciplines (social studies, science, etc.) The instructor will develop contextualized curricula that includes technology, materials for differentiating instruction and informal needs assessments.  The instructor will administer the TABE Full Battery. The instructor will participate in staff meetings and other staff development activities.

The position is part time and will run in the evenings at the Community Health Academy of the Heights.  The program will run from September through June.  The specific days and times of the program are T.B.A.  We offer a competitive hourly wage.
