KTC seeks lead tutors (US History, Global History, Living Environment, Integrated Algebra) for immediate hire to facilitate individual/group sessions to high school students in our Regents Academy Prep (RAP). RAP is a pilot focused on preparing students for the January Regents.

Description
  • Collaborate with peer tutors to review assignments and provide KTC staff written feedback 
  • Create weekly lesson plans 
  • Conduct small group sessions 
  • Facilitate 1-hour prep time after each class 
  • Create weekly assessments and grade weekly assignments 
  • Attend orientations Nov 11 and Dec 9 
Qualifications

Two Bilingual ESOL/Citizenship Preparation Teachers (P/T)

Two PT BILINGUAL ESOL/Citizenship Preparation TEACHERS needed for two temporary positions Jan-June 2015 in Jackson Heights, Queens, to teach a Bilingual ESOL/Citizenship Preparation classes for low intermediate or more advanced speakers of English

Description: these positions will be temporary to replace a staff member who will be on leave between Jan - June 2015. The 4 classes taught will target residents from around the Jackson Heights, Queens neighborhood who need to develop the English language skills necessary to pass their Naturalization exams. The classes will use ESOL techniques to help students develop the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills necessary for their exams, and for civic engagement both as residents and future citizens.

The instructor will use core texts and materials provided by USCIS and compliment them with a variety of ESOL and EL-civics texts.  Attention to 4 skills, to thematic instruction, cooperative learning, and integration of technology when possible, is expected. The teacher will tailor existing materials to the needs of their students and will use Spanish very occasionally to assist with student comprehension when necessary. Additionally, the teacher is expected to take responsibility for basic administrative duties such as attendance tracking, follow up calls, and some 1 on1 conferencing and surveying to track educational progress as well as to assure that students are connected with support services as needed.

Requirements:
Bilingual Spanish/English, experience teaching ESOL at multiple levels, masters or certification in ESOL instruction strongly preferred, BEST Plus certified, excellent organizational skills, experience teaching in social-justice focused community-based organizations, willingness to participate in brief bi-weekly meetings with program Director either in person or via phone, willingness to call students regularly re: class and attendance issues.

Class schedule:
These temporary positions will take over classes starting in January, but we would like anyone we hire to plan to work a couple of hours in December to shadow and plan with the teacher they’ll be temporarily replacing.  There are 4 classes--- we are hoping to have two teachers teach two classes each.

 M/W 6-9 in Q, T/Th 6-9 in Q & Saturdays: 9-1 & 1:30-5:30 in Queens.   
•      For a teacher taking the2 night classes you’ll be paid for about 20hrs/wk
•      For a teacher taking the 2 Sat classes you’ll be paid for about 14 hrs/wk.
•      If 2 teachers each take a pm and a Sat class you’d each be paid about 17 hrs/wk. 
 
Pay: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.  (Average hourly rates for PT instructors run between $20-25 an hour depending on experience, but teachers are paid for prep and meetings on top of teaching time so the rates end up being fairly comparable to other CBO based classes.)

Strongly Preferred: Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL; experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members. 
 
Required: BA, at least 3 yrs. experience teaching adults & multiple ESOL level classes.  Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class; Sense of humor/good team player a plus. Excellent computer skills. BEST Plus certification preferred. 
 
Class Schedule: M-Th 8-10pm  
NOTE: Classes will run until the end of December and then again Jan-June 2015.
 
Hours:  paid on average 13 hrs/wk (8 hrs of those for teaching)

The Career & Vocational Counselor will be the lead on providing job development and career advancement services for our students (primarily youth, but also adults), as well as for Literacy Zone participants who are also youth and immigrants, and/or incumbent adult job seekers. 
Counselors work closely with teachers and administrative staff to provide 360 degree service including, but not limited to, job placement support and retention. 
Counselors are expected to attend staff meetings and trainings as needed. This is a full-time position that requires a flexible weekday schedule, including 2 evenings per week.

Career Counselor - RBSCC Community Empowerment Center 
SALARY: Mid $30,000 annually (Full Time) 
JOB SUMMARY: The Career Counselor is responsible for providing participant assessment, career plan development and implementation, ongoing support, and engagement through all phases of the program. 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct initial assessments, provide ongoing engagement/support, and ensure positive outcomes for a case load of approximately 25-40 participants. Assist program participants with career plans, résumé and cover letter writing, and job search. Verify participant eligibility, collect data, and provide documentation as required. Facilitate Career Development Workshops, soft skills seminars, educational classes and hard skills trainings 
QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires experience working in a career development or social service agency, ideally in a counseling/mentoring position. The Career Counselor should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years’ experience working in non-profit organizations.

Queens Library- Pre High School Equivalency (HSE) Instructor Queens Library- Central Adult Learning Center –Jamaica, NY 
• Effectively teach reading comprehension, standard English grammar, essay writing, math (arithmetic, geometry, & algebra), and test-taking skills 
• The ability to develop lessons using extensive writing and reading practice in the content areas of science and social studies 
• Must be comfortable with learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach 
• Teachers are responsible for creating her/his own curriculum and lesson plans 
• Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans, integrating technology 
• Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and in class quizzes 
• Integrate technology into instructional strategies 
• Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention 


Educational requirements: This position requires a valid BA/BS Degree, MA/MS Degree preferred with 3+ years of experience teaching adults. Must have familiarity with the current NYS HSE exam, knowledge of TASC and Common Core State Standards. 
Must be able to multi-task and have strong communications skills. Be willing to participate in professional development workshops and/or certification programs to remain competent and relevant in the field of adult education. 

Monday and Wednesday 4:30-8:30pm Salary: $34 per hour
