ESL Instructor- evening class in Brooklyn- starting September

The Jewish Community Council of GCI is looking to hire an experienced Adult ESL instructor to provide ESL instruction to adults in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn.

Class will meet two evenings per week.  Duties include: assessing/testing students, providing appropriate instruction etc.

BA and excellent English written/oral skills required. Bi-lingual Russian and/or Ukrainian and BEST Plus certification strongly preferred.

Part-time 20  hours per week morning and evening hours.  
B.A./B.S. degree is preferred/ High School Diploma or GED required and at least two years recent, relevant coordinating experience.
Must be highly organized and an excellent communicator.
Familiarity with TABE test administration and GED Management software is required. 
Experience working with the wide variety of participants that enroll in GED class preferred.
Preference given to GED earners themselves
Must be willing to travel to South Brooklyn and participate in extensive outreach to marginalized communities.

 Brooklyn Community Services’ Education Centers provides adult education services to the Brooklyn community. We serve 500 students yearly with GED preparation classes, ESL classes, and vocational training. In addition, the Education Center operates a Family Welcome Center (FWC) in which we provide case management & wrap-around services, workforce development programming, and regular community workshops & events. Many of our students speak Spanish, Arabic, or Mandarin as their first language.

We are looking to fill the following 3 positions:
Adult Basic Education Instructor  Application Link

Status: Part time
Hours: Monday - Friday, 10 am - 2 pm
Rate Range: $40 per hour - $40 per hour
Position Description:
BCS Education Center is hiring a part time instructor for its adult basic education programs. The instructor will teach reading & writing and math to students who are preparing for the GED exam. Responsibilities include writing curriculums, facilitating classes, conducting intake, and administering tests.

Qualifications Required:
  • Bachelors in education or a related field
  • Two years teaching experience (preferably in an adult literacy program)
  • Language skills in Spanish, Arabic, and/or Chinese is preferred

Position Description:
BCS Education Center is hiring an ESL Teacher for its Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) programs in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The Part Time ESL Teacher will provide ESL instruction to beginner level English language learners. Classes are offered in-person from 6 pm - 9 pm, Monday - Thursday.

Qualifications Required:
  • Certificate or higher in TESOL or equivalent
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field, Masters preferred
  • Three or more years teaching ESL in an adult education setting
  • Language skills in Spanish, Arabic, and/or Chinese are preferred
  • Strong computer skills
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues and work as part of a team
  • Ability to be communicative in the face of stress, feedback, or change

Salary Range: $55,000 - $60,000
Position Description:
The Education Center offers GED preparation classes to participants 17 years and older. Instruction is offered in reading & writing (integrating social studies), math, and science. The GED Coordinator oversees GED preparation programming, teaches GED preparation classes, supervises part-time GED instructional staff, conducts outreach & enrollment, and organizes pre and post testing schedules.

Qualifications Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, adult education, or equivalent; Masters degree preferred
  • Language skills in Spanish, Arabic, and/or Chinese are preferred
  • Three or more years teaching experience in an adult education setting
  • Very strong computer skills
  • Strong outreach, marketing, and networking skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Strong problem solving skills and the ability to be resourceful
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues and work as part of a team
  • Ability to be communicative in the face of stress, feedback, or change

Responsibilities:
  • Oversight of GED preparation programs
  • Instruction of beginner Pre-HSE GED preparation classes
  • Pre-testing and post-testing using TABE
  • Attend biweekly staff meetings
  • Tracks student attendance
  • Optimizes learning outcomes (observes classes, collects student feedback, monitors test scores, and takes steps to improve learning outcomes)
  • Other duties as assigned

​NEW YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY 
DIVISION OF CONTINUING EDUCATION
PART TIME HSE INSTRUCTOR POSITION

Under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of Education Programs, the HSE Instructor will provide high school equivalency math instruction to evening students at the Adult Learning Center. 

Classes offered on Wednesdays from 6 – 9pm, beginning in September 2023.  

All instruction is in person at CUNY City Tech in downtown Brooklyn at: 
300 Jay Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201.

Responsibilities include: 
  • Create a student-centered, engaging learning environment, as required by CUNY 
  • Develop theme-based, contextualized lessons for upper-level math class
  • Assess student content knowledge and tailor instruction relevant to GED preparation
  • Evaluate student progress and provide feedback, both formally and informally
  • Administer required assessments, which may include TABE and other testing
  • Maintain attendance records and work collaboratively with office and counselors on student participation and needs
  • Complete professional development hours as required by the Regional Adult Education Network (RAEN) 

Qualifications: 
  • BA or BS in education or related field 
  • Minimum two years related teaching experience, preferably in grant-funded literacy programs 
  • Knowledge of GED/TASC exam and math content
  • Ability to create thematic, content-based curricula 
  • Proficient at integrating technology into lessons
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and oral communication skills

ESOL Instructor P/T

The Adult Learning Center (ALC) at NYC College of Technology has an opening for an experienced and dynamic ESOL instructor to teach a contextualized (health sector) upper-level class. The class meets during the daytime twice a week at the Brooklyn Opportunity Center near City Tech. ESOL Instruction will support students co-enrolled in a Medical Assistant training program with the goal of pursuing a career in health care. The instructor attends meetings, creates lesson plans and develops curricula.

Primary responsibilities:
  • Design and develop lesson plans for Medical Assistant trainees based on input from Medical Assistant professors, current research, and best practices
  • Deliver engaging, practical, contextualized classes that include a variety of experiential instructional techniques to strengthen the skills necessary for successful completion of the Medical Assistant program
  • Create a student-centered learning environment to maximize student participation and promote self-sufficiency
  • Provide support during outreach, information sessions, and the application process
  • Maintain attendance records and communicate with administrative staff and program counselor regarding student absences and other issues
  • Track student progress to ensure that participants progress satisfactorily - adjust activities and assignments as needed
  • Work with the Educational Case Manager to assist students in setting and managing goals
  • Collaborate with City Tech and BEOC personnel to meet program goals and objectives

Requirements:
  • BA in education or related field; MA preferred
  • Experience developing and teaching contextualized ESOL to adults. Must be well-versed in student-centered learning and approaches
  • Knowledge or experience related to the health field desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team is required
  • Must have solid writing ability and be well organized
  • Comfortable with technology and resources in a classroom and online setting
  • Best Plus certified or willingness to become certified
