Mathematics Instructor - ABE/GED Part Time
The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Math teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners. The class meets for two evening sessions a week.

Essential duties include:                                                                                  
  • Providing high-quality instruction to help students develop their conceptual understanding and math skills
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster an appreciation of math
  • Collaborating with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and enriching materials
  • Reviewing and communicating class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partaking in teacher meetings and citywide professional development
  • Maintaining class attendance and submitting in a timely manner

Adult Literacy Instructor for Bridge to Health Careers Math Class

MRNY’s NYC based Adult Education team is seeking a highly motivated, compassionate and skilled math instructor to join our Bridge to Health Careers class team.  The math instructor will work 10 hrs/ week. The position will be based out of our Bushwick, Brooklyn location with some remote work. 

(4.5 of the 10 hours will be instructional- classes take place on Fridays,  & the rest will be for class prep, meetings, and student communication.)

Our Education Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), citizenship preparation, health job training classes and in-school and after-school youth programs. And our Departments of Legal, Health & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Class Schedules/length of job:

Classes will begin 9/12. The instructor will be asked to start in later August.  The classes will run until the end of June 2023 and summer work time will be available after that if/as the instructor is interested.  

Instructor responsibilities include: 
  • Curricular design work- Hand in course outlines, unit and lesson plans and related materials in the requested format by the deadlines that are set and agreed to. Maintain all of that in the Google drive, and integrate certain thematic content and materials into lessons as required by funders or decided by the team  
  • Student Assessment- combine TABE initial assessments with original math assessments at the beginning of the cycle and continue to assess students in an intentional and structured way throughout the cycle
  • Instruction- Deliver content material in ways that take into account students’ levels and learning styles, the need to pace and scaffold information
  • Communication with and support of students - Call absent students who missed your class and document calls; make referrals to MRNY’s case manager as needed
  • Related admin/grant related tasks- in addition to tracking attendance, grading of samples of students’ work, and writing monthly progress notes for a portion of students in the class, as funders require
  • Participate in meetings and trainings- attend external professional development according to funders’ requirements, as well as 1 on 1 support meetings, team and staff meetings

Job Requirements:
  • Eligible to work in the US

Salary & Benefits
Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including access to health insurance, & 401K to staff with over 20 hrs a week, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days and paid holidays. The salary range for this position would be between $45,099 -$61,859 if the position were FT and the hourly rate is between $25-30/hr depending on experience.

Please note, MRNY staff are currently working both remotely and in-person through 2022, though these classes will be delivered in person. The position will be based at our Brooklyn office and will continue to require a mix of remote non instructional work and in person instructional and assessment related work in 2023. Hybrid work schedules for the position which identify when work will be based in the office and when outside of the office will be created and then adjusted when needed in consultation with the supervisor of the person we hire.

SUMMARY OF POSITION: 
ICD seeks a dynamic Pre-HSE Numeracy Instructor with a track record of success to lead a new and innovative program for youth with disabilities to help them achieve their HSE (high school equivalency) diploma. The instructor will teach Pre-HSE/Numeracy classes, focusing on literacy components needed to pass New York State’s high school equivalency test, the General Educational Development (formerly TASC). The instructor must have a proven track record in literacy instruction, and will be expected to develop and then assess and measure student progress on a high school equivalency curriculum adapted for students with disabilities.

The Pre-HSE Numeracy Instructor is responsible for instruction in Math and Science in a way that is contextualized and meaningful for students with disabilities. The instructor will work very closely with the Pre-HSE Literacy Instructor. Instruction will be provided in-person with students simultaneously participating remotely. In addition, the instructor will develop and submit regular lesson logs, write student case notes, provide insight on the existing curriculum, and meet professional development requirements. Consideration will be given to candidates with experience working with youth with disabilities at the 6-9th grade math level.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Classroom Facilitation
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans and educational activities for students on math and science tops for ABE/HSE student in participating both in-person and simultaneous remote instruction - - approximately 3 months per cohort at 15 hours per week.
  • Adjust instruction according to the various learning styles of program participants, while maintain a safe and collaborative learning environment. Specifically, provide necessary accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students.
  • Instruct in the program in a manner that supports student retention and daily attendance consistent while assisting students in meeting their education goals.  These duties will include the following:
    • Select, score, and interpret TABE exam
    • Deliver appropriate HSE instruction
    • Responsible for maintaining 75% average daily attendance
    • Consult with other staff to develop and maintain the student’s educational and employment plan.
    • Report attendance, test scores, and outcomes on a regular basis
  • Work with the Director of Student Experience to integrate technology into class work.  Specifically, actively maintain a digital classroom using either Google Classroom or a similar program to upload class recordings and assign/provide feedback on class and homework within a timely manner.
  • Initiate and participate in case conferencing as needed.

Managing Student Performance 
  • Provide students with ongoing feedback, conferencing, and performance appraisals.  Recognize any challenges early and work with the team and students to overcome them.
  • Prepare student evaluations individually and in conjunction with the rest of the program team, consisting of Vocational Rehabilitation & Youth Counselor and Youth Employment Specialist.
  • Administer the Test of Adult Basic Education exam and track results (training will be provided).
  • Continually assess student progress toward mastery of standards and keep students and the Director of Student Experience well informed of student progress by collecting and tracking data, providing daily feedback and weekly assessments.
  • Monitor students’ performance and attendance for required reporting systems.
 
Administrative
  • Participate in required team meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Prepare progress notes and other program monitoring reports.
  • Complete and submit weekly lesson logs and bimonthly student case notes.
  • Maintain attendance records, ensure accuracy of completion, and submit them in a timely manner.
  • Provide information on testing centers
  • Other duties as required

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education preferred.  
  • Two (2) years teaching experience in numeracy required.  Preference will be given for licensed teachers and qualified candidates with HSE teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of Pre-HSE and HSE curriculum and NYS HSE testing requirements. 
  • Ability to teach all subject areas (reading, math, science, social studies, and writing) preferred.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Functional knowledge of lesson plan development, classroom management and basic teaching methods for adults.  Ability to teach in a highly interactive and hands-on style, and to analyze and synthesize technical information.

  5. Related admin/grant related tasks- in addition to tracking attendance, help with post testing, grading of samples of students’ work, and writing monthly progress notes for a portion of students in the class, as funders require.
  6. Participate in meetings and trainings- attend external professional development according to funders’ requirements, as well as 1 on 1 support meetings, team and staff meetings
  7. Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education
  8. Good team player able to collaborate with the lead teacher. 
Required:
  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least 3 yrs. math teaching experience, preferably teaching adults.
  • For ESOL classes must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class
  • Strong computer skills
Strongly Preferred:
  • Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL or math (as relevant to the position)
  • Experience teaching for the TABE Math Test
  • Experience working in community based social justice organizations
  • Interest in collaboration and professional development with team members.
Preferred:
  • Some proficiency in Spanish
  • Best Plus Certified a plus
Class Schedules/length of job: The math class runs 1 day a week- Note: currently it’s Fridays, though it might be possible to move it to another day of the week for the right candidate if Friday is impossible.  Class runs 8:45-1:30.
 
There is a Fall Cohort which starts in mid Sept and a Winter cohort which starts in late Jan/early Feb.   
 
The job will run from late August 2021 to late June 2022 with the possibility to renew for the 2022 / 2023 academic year, depending on the teacher’s performance and funding.  
 
Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically- elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.

CAMBA seeks a full-time HSE math instructor to work at its Education Center as of the month of April of 2021 and deliver instruction online (via Zoom) until in-person classes can restart at 955 Flatbush Avenue – Brooklyn, N.Y. The hired instructor is scheduled to work from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. The instructor will teach two classes per work day, one from 9 am to 12 noon and another from 1 to 4 pm. Candidates must have a B.A/B.S. in education or a related field; Masters preferred. Candidates must have experience teaching online (especially on Zoom) and must have taught ABE/GED/TASC preparation for at least 2 years and must have experience working with low income and/or ethnically diverse populations.
