Adult Basic Education Instructor
About Harlem Commonwealth Council:
Harlem Commonwealth Council, Inc. (HCC) is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) local development organization dedicated to broad-based economic improvements to Upper Manhattan and the Bronx, as well as to their vibrant multi-cultural communities. Since 1967, Harlem Commonwealth Council has served the greater Harlem community by implementing a number of successful ventures and programs that promote self-sufficiency and create stability through economic development projects, academic empowerment and entrepreneurial support. Located in the heart of Harlem, HCC has a history of responding to the community’s needs. Initially, the organization’s Economic Development focus was real estate development. Currently, HCC’s Economic Development strategy includes helping launch and build businesses and assisting less skilled Upper Manhattan residents become economically independent through training and education.  

Key Responsibilities
An HCC ABE teacher is responsible for the implementation of basic education instruction to adult students. Under minimum supervision, the individual will conduct instruction as specified in HCC's adult basic education program curriculum guide.  With the assistance of the director, plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the adult student.
  • Maintains a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Uses a variety of instructional methods and techniques.
  • Meets and instructs classes as designated.
  • Prepares for all classes assigned.
  • Determines the correct entry level of students.
  • Evaluates student progress regularly with the intent of improving student performance in accordance with HCC and funding guidelines
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and up-to-date records.
  • Promotes and regularly monitors class attendance in accordance with HCC policy and funders expectations.
  • Intervenes as appropriate with students to discuss and promote class attendance and performance

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required or five years of teaching adult education.
  • Knowledge of adult student characteristics.
  • Knowledge of adult basic education content areas.
  • Teaching ability in ABE content areas.
  • Sensitivity to and experience working with diverse populations, and experience working with students of varying skill levels.
  • Ability to organize data to produce student reports.
  • Ability to make decisions concerning student instruction

Compensation/Schedule
$32/ hour; 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., Monday -Thursday

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ESOL Teacher is responsible for teaching English to NMIC participants.

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop curriculum for ESOL instruction based on educational and NMIC's ESOL curriculum.
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans and educational activities for program participants.
  • Administer assessment tests, i.e., BEST Plus, and report results.
  • Responsible for monitoring of students' educational progress.
  • Complete and submit weekly lesson logs.
  • Write and maintain regular participant case notes to document students' educational
  • Maintain attendance records and submit daily attendance logs to program staff.
  • Attend professional development sessions according to city and state standards
  • Attend program meetings as required by supervisor
  • Initiate and participate in case conferences, where needed
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BA/BS required, MA strongly preferred.
  • TESOL/TEFL certification preferred, but not required.
  • BestPlus 2.0 certification preferred, but not required.

Grace Outreach seeks a skilled, passionate professional to play an integral role in the delivery of services in the Career Prep program area of the organization. This position requires the ability to deliver career-based content to students in a classroom setting, knowledge of the NYC workforce development landscape, ability to advise students 1-on-1 regarding career options and possibilities, flexibility, the ability to communicate positively in multiple directions, and an openness to continual learning. Coordinate Career Prep program activities:
  • Manage and coordinate day-to-day Career Prep activities serving 70-100 current students, and 1000+ alumnae

Counselor Coordinator/F-T
Turning Point Education Center

Position Description
This position is responsible for supervising the Education Center's counseling team, further developing the department (as detailed below), and providing important leadership between departments and overall at the Education Center. The counseling team is an integral part of the Education Center's mission. As the leader for this department, this position has the chance to make a broad impact at Turning Point and in Sunset Park.

This position also has a caseload as an ABE/HSE counselor, working with students (primarily youth, but also some adults) to identify, predict, and prevent obstacles to learning. S/he provides individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, goal setting, and employment readiness assistance. Counselors work closely with teachers and administrative staff to provide 360 degree service.

This is a full-time position that requires a flexible weekday schedule, with potentially one evening shift expected each week.
We are especially interested in candidates with clinical experience who can provide both programmatic and clinical supervision; however, we encourage all interested candidates to apply.

Turning Point's Education Center is a community-based program in Sunset Park (Brooklyn) offering free Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE), and English (ESOL) classes, as well as support services. Our qualified staff is committed to creating an holistic learning community where students develop the skills to reach their goals. Peer support, student-centered learning, and critical thinking are central to the program. Our basic literacy and HSE programs primarily serve out-of-school youth, and our program embraces youth culture and youth development strategies.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide programmatic and clinical supervision for ABE/HSE and ESOL counselors
  • Lead the continuous improvement of the department and the program by co-leading staff development, strategic and tactical program decisions, and development of new projects or programs, as needed
  • Represent the Education Center at meetings with community partners, city-wide events, and/or Turning Point programs
  • Data: oversee data accountability for the team; develop processes as needed; collect and maintain accurate data on student outcomes; submit accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as required
  • Lead regular interdisciplinary case conferences with teaching and counseling staff. Collaborate with teachers by sitting in on classes and case conferencing on a regular basis to co-evaluate student progress
  • Regular, confidential, individual supportive counseling for youth, proactively resolving student issues that may interfere with academic success
  • Crisis intervention conferencing
  • Facilitate student group sessions that support holistic personal growth, provide resources to help overcome obstacles, and activities that build social skills
  • Refer students as needed, and assist and/or advocate for students to obtain: benefits, housing, school, employment, emergency assistance, shelter, daycare, and additional social services
Other Responsibilities
  • The following duties are to be performed as assigned by the supervisor:
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and staff development sessions.
  • Lead design and facilitation of special events and student productions, such as the graduation ceremony
  • Keep abreast of trends and developments in the fields relevant to the work of the Education Center, represent its work at professional networks and meetings, and advance the work and reputation of the Education Center in the community.
Education and Certification
  • LMSW preferred, or Master's and equivalent experience working directly with adolescents, young adults, and/or immigrants in an advocacy/empowerment position.
  • LCSW candidates and those with a background in clinical supervision strongly encouraged to apply. Background in popular education philosophies a plus.

Current Openings:
Make the Road New York’s Adult Literacy Team is seeking experienced, bilingual/Spanish proficient ESOL instructors committed to social justice for 1 and possibly two part-time positions at our Jackson Heights, Queens community centers. The instructors will teach ESOL as well as do class planning, materials creation, individualized follow up with students, and some meetings and professional development.
 
Strongly Preferred: Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL; experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members. 
 
Required: BA, at least 3 yrs. experience teaching ESOL to adults & multiple ESOL level classes.  Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class; Sense of humor/good team player a plus. Excellent computer skills. BEST Plus certification. 
 
Class Schedules:
Classes will run from first week in Sept. thru the end of June 2016 with the following schedules:

CAMBA needs several ESOL instructors to teach part-time at its 885 Flatbush Avenue site in Brooklyn, N.Y. The work schedules are 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 1 to 4 PM, and 5:30 to 8:30 PM, Monday through Thursday.  Classes will start in the first week of October, 2016. 

It is required that candidates have at least a BA/BS in education or a related field and at least 2 years of experience as an ESOL instructor; MA/MS preferred. It is also required that candidates be certified and experienced administrators of BEST Plus or BEST Plus 2.0. Candidates must be familiar with internet resources of relevance to English learners and be able to integrate technology and workplace skills into classroom instruction.
