JOB TITLE:  High School Equivalency Teacher – Adult Education
REPORTS TO:   Rochdale Adult Learning Center Manager
 
JOB LOCATION: Queens Library Rochdale Adult Learning Center 169-09 137th Ave., Jamaica NY 11434

Job Summary:
Rochdale Adult Learning Center seeks Part-Time Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency Teachers to teach 4-5 subjects (Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Math and Science) to adult students in the Adult Education Program, and prepare students for the TASC exam. The position requires creative and dedicated instructors particularly experienced with teaching adults. We have immediate openings for the Fall, starting in September. Hours are Mondays from 10AM to 1PM and 4PM to 8PM for Fall.  Starting pay is $38 per hour.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage a classroom of up to 15-25 adults over the age of 18+.
  • Help students prepare for the TASC exam and improve their literacy level.
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans/curriculum and educational activities for students in ABE/HSE programming
  • Review assessments tests and monitor students’ educational progress and liaise with staff members. Provide feedback and establish education plans
  • Report attendance for each session. 
  • Demonstrate ability to perform multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in using technology in the classroom.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and google drive. 
  • Provide tutoring services to students
Qualifications:
  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and minimum 3+ years’ experience teaching Adult Basic Education.
  • Experienced teachers with good interpersonal skills who enjoy working in diverse cultural settings.
  • Passionate teachers looking to empower underserved communities through Adult Basic education.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, verbal and written skills.
  • Experience with TABE testing preferred.
  • Knowledge of Common Core Basics and College and Career Readiness Standards preferred.  
  • Knowledge of the New York State TASC exam preferred.​

ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher (P/T)

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners.  The class meets twice a week for three hours each day. The position begins in September 2018; starting salary is $32/hr. The Lehman ALC is currently hiring for morning classes.
 
Essential duties include:                                                                                   
  • Providing high-quality theme-based instruction to help students develop their reading and writing skills
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster a love of reading and learning
  • Collaborating with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and enriching materials
  • Reviewing and communicating class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partaking in in-house teacher meetings and citywide professional development
  • Maintaining class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Participating in new student orientations and program-wide events and activities
  • Conducting required assessments including TABE and TASC Readiness exams
  • Having a willingness to learn and become part of the ALC community of teachers and learners

Education Requirements:
Candidate must have Bachelor's degree and relevant teaching and education experience. Prior adult education experience, Master’s Degree a plus.

The Adult Learning Center is looking to fill part-time instructor positions including ESOL, Citizenship, and HSE Spanish for daytime, evening, and Saturday sessions. Classes offered at the NYC College of Technology and offsite locations. Classes scheduled to start in September.
Responsibilities include:
  • Customize instruction to create a high quality English curriculum/lesson plans for adults
  • Create a student-centered, engaging learning environment
  • Assess student progress and provide feedback
  • Administer and monitor student testing, including Best Plus and Best Literacy
  • Maintain attendance records and communicate with administrative staff and counselors regarding student absences and other issues
  • Complete 14 hours of professional development through Regional Adult Education Network (RAEN) offerings
Qualifications:
  • BA or BS in education or related field, TESOL
  • Minimum two years related teaching experience, preferably in grant-funded literacy programs
  • Experience creating thematic, content-based curricula
  • Best Plus certified preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and oral communication skills

Evening Counselor- The Adult Learning Center at NYC College of Technology
Location: Off-site location in Borough Park, Brooklyn. 
Times: Two evenings a week; 6-9pm. 
Salary: $32-35/hour

The Adult Learning Center at NYC College of Technology, CUNY is seeking a creative part-time evening counselor to work at our offsite location in Borough Park, Brooklyn. The counselor will work two evenings a week, from 6-9 PM, with the possibility of additional hours at the college or other satellite locations.

Responsibilities include:
  • Provide academic, personal, and vocational support and advisement to students
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive referral list
  • Maintain and update detailed records of counseling sessions
  • Assist in the planning and delivery of student workshops and information sessions
  • Provide support with registration, testing, and orientation of new students
  • Work closely with instructors and administrative staff to meet program objectives  

Requirements:
  • BA in counseling or related field, MA preferred
  • At least two years providing counseling / case management to adult immigrants, preferably in grant-funded literacy programs
  • Bilingual Spanish / English strongly preferred. Knowledge of Bengali, Polish, Arabic or Chinese a plus.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of adult immigrants
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Well-organized and discreet in dealing with student issues
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks

  • Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide instruction to students enrolled in ESL classes.
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans that incorporates the use of computer based activities for students and submit to Program Coordinator at the end of each month.

CLIP Tutor P/T

Tutoring Position for Fall 2018
The CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) at Bronx Community College provides intensive English language instruction to adult immigrants who plan to matriculate in a CUNY college. We are looking for tutors who will work under the direction of classroom teachers to assist students in all four language domains. Responsibilities may include:
  • helping students, one-on-one, to revise their essays for grammar, mechanics, and content
  • working with students individually and in groups on reading skills
  • honing oral presentation and pronunciation skills
  • assisting students with annotation during read-alouds and taking notes during lectures
  • assisting students with PowerPoint presentations
Tutors may also be asked to facilitate whole-class instruction and group work, as well as grade student assessments. Applicants must be flexible enough to work with faculty members with a variety of teaching styles.  Prior experience working with ESL students and some graduate coursework in TESOL/Applied Linguistics preferred.

​Hours: 
Day Position: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM    Monday – Thursday
Evening Position: 5:15 PM to 9:45 PM    Three evenings per week. The days are flexible.
