ESOL Instructor P/T

Literacy Volunteers at Family Centers Inc. seeks dynamic and innovative part-time ESOL instructor for its evening ESOL Transition to Success class. Program targets adults who test at the High Intermediate and Low Advanced levels and are unemployed or underemployed and need guidance determining their future, coupled with basic skills development. 

Responsibilities of the position will include:
  • Prepare lessons in keeping with program goals and curricula, utilizing instruction that insures students improve basic reading, writing, language and computer skills.
  • Monitor and report student progress and attendance and participate in regular meetings with Education Coordinator and for curriculum and professional development
  • Integrate technology into instructional strategies
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention
  • Provide regular and prompt feedback to students regarding their progress, and manage the development of students’ individual career pathways portfolios.
  • Class meet 2 nights per week (Tues. &Thurs. 6:30-8:45 pm)
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree and Connecticut state ESL certification.
  • Relevant ESOL teaching experience and familiarity with ICA curriculum a plus

ESOL Instructor P/T

Riis Settlement seeks an experienced, creative, hard-working and dynamic ESOL instructor to work 9 hours per week in the evenings (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.). Successful candidates will have experience creating student-centered learning environments, using a communicative approach, and incorporating civic engagement, job readiness and technology in the classroom. The ESOL Instructor will work within the Immigrant Services Program to provide limited English proficient adults with contextualized instruction that gives students the civic and English language skills to effectively participate in the English-speaking environment in which they live. The instructor fosters a classroom environment that offers participants the resources, opportunities and support needed to help them grow and achieve self-sufficiency. 

Primary Job Responsibilities: 
Participant Interaction 
  • Provide contextualized, content-based English language instruction at beginning, intermediate and/or advanced levels. Provide authentic language tasks, interactive activities, and opportunities to practice speaking and writing for fluency. 
  • Design and implement engaging lesson plans that incorporate best practices in TESOL and adult education and assist students in meeting the curriculum standards for appropriate NRS level through a variety of instructional methods adapted to diverse learning styles. 
  • Incorporate civic engagement into ESOL classroom instruction. 
  • Design and administer student assessment tools that gauge student learning and monitor achievement of performance outcomes. 
  • Create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants. 
Administrative Functions 
  • Submit bi-weekly unit plans that address material to be covered in class. 
  • Assist with registration and pre- and post-testing as needed (training will be provided if not certified to administer BEST Plus). 
  • Attend staff development activities and monthly program meetings. 
  • Assist with reporting requirements as needed, including student goal-setting and outcome assessment. 

Statement of Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2+ years relevant teaching experience (Master’s in TESOL and/or Education preferred) 
  • Ability to modify/adapt existing lesson plans and curricula to fit program needs, and/or create original lesson plans 
  • Thorough, detailed knowledge and understanding of English grammar with the ability to clearly explain all verbs, tenses and parts of speech. 
  • Ability to interact with diverse ethnic populations and empathize with people unfamiliar with local culture. 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with team. 
  • Advanced computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft XP. 
  • Ethical and professional conduct that facilitates the building of a respectful, trusting and collaborative relationship with program staff and students.

ASISTS Program Associate

The Literacy Assistance Center is seeking a person with excellent communication and data analysis skills to join its ASISTS team.  The ASISTS Program Associate will be responsible for supporting users of the ASISTS (Adult Student Information and Technical Support) data system and assisting with the data analysis functions of the ASISTS unit.  ASISTS is the data system used by all NYS adult education providers funded by the New York State Education System (NYSED). 

Responsibilities:
  • Support ASISTS users on how to use the ASISTS data system to accurately track and report student data.  This support will be provided by email, over the phone and through webinars.  
  • Communicate any ASISTS software issues with the ASISTS Senior Developer.
  • Assist the ASISTS Associate Director in planning and conducting ASISTS training sessions
  • Work with the ASISTS Associate Director to develop an online self-paced ASISTS training course
  • Assist the ASISTS Director in creating the following required reports for NYSED:
             + The NYS NRS report submitted by NYSED to the Federal Department of                            + Education Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE)
             + The Adult Education report cards used by NYSED to evaluate adult education                      programs statewide
             + The regional and NYS fact sheets on students served by the adult education                          system in New York State
  • Partner with the ASISTS Director in conceptualizing and executing new data analysis projects that serves the adult education community.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree
  • Minimum of five years of experience as an adult literacy instructor, manager, and/or staff developer
  • Experience with data analysis software, including SPSS, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative and be self-directed
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Enthusiasm and ability to work as part of a team 
  • Ability to effectively represent and promote the work of the organization
  • Technologically adept
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing work environments and projects

Computer Lab Assistant P/T

The CLIP program at Bronx Community College seeks a computer lab assistant to help adult English language learners with computer skills. 
Responsibilities include:
  • Designing and providing training sessions with students on basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, as well as CUNY’s internal computer systems
  • Assisting teachers with instructional technology, both in workshops and one-on-one
  • Assisting students one-on-one when they have difficulty with hardware or software
  • Maintaining inventory
  • Ensuring that students follow computer lab rules
  • Performing basic maintenance and troubleshooting with computers, printers, projectors, laptops, document cameras, etc.

Pay:  $12 per hour to start. 

Schedule: (updated) Tuesday from 1-7 pm, Thursday from 5-9 pm and Friday from 1-7 pm.  



Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; at least one year of college preferred 
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint

Adult Education Workforce Development Instructor F/T

CAMBA's comprehensive Workforce Development and Refugee Services programs annually provide over 1,800 low income community members with employment, education, training, benefits access, financial literacy and English language services. CAMBA specializes in assisting those with special barriers to employment including low skilled workers, long-term unemployed, immigrants and refugees, limited English speakers, formerly homeless, seniors, formerly incarcerated, trauma survivors and victims of human trafficking. These programs are performance-based, and success is measured by meeting enrollment, employment placement, training, retention, and case management goals.

The person filling this position is expected, under general direction, to: (1) research and develop instructional materials and lesson plans; and, (2) instruct adults in academic and/or nonacademic subjects in order to develop and/or enhance their employment skills.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) and one year of applicable experience and/or equivalent experience​.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Teaching style must be hands-on, interactive, and participatory (not lecture based).
  • Ability to multi-task and to work a flexible or alternative workweek schedule based upon program needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with immigrant, refugee and asylee populations.
  • Bilingual or multilingual is a plus (i.e., French, Arabic, Tibetan, Fulani or Russian).

RBSCC, INC. is seeking part- time ESOL Instructors. Days and times available include: M/W: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Salary: $ 35.00 per hour.

  • Provide instruction to students enrolled in ESL classes. 
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans that incorporates the use of computer based activities for students and submit to Program Coordinator at the end of each month.  
  • Maintain student’s portfolio. 
  • Administer assessments regularly to all students to track their progress. 
  • Refer participants internally for support services as needed and follow-up to ensure services are being offered.

Make the Road New York (www.maketheroadny.org) is a non-profit organization that builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services.  We have 16,000 members and operate five community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island.

Current Openings:
Make the Road New York’s Adult Literacy Team is seeking experienced, bilingual/Spanish proficient ESOL instructors committed to social justice for multiple part-time positions at our Jackson Heights, Queens and Bushwick, Brooklyn community centers. The instructors will teach ESOL as well as do class planning, materials creation, individualized follow up with students, and some meetings and professional development.

Strongly Preferred: Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL; experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members. 

Required: BA, at least 3 yrs. experience teaching ESOL to adults & multiple ESOL level classes.  Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class; Sense of humor/good team player a plus. Excellent computer skills. BEST Plus certification. 

Class Schedules:
Classes will run from first week in Sept. thru the end of June 2016 with the following schedules:

Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.
