ESOL Teacher

Duties and Responsibilities
This part-time position will provide instruction to our ESOL classes and students in the Queens Public Library’s Adult Learner Program (ALP) and New Americans Programs (NAP). The ESOL Teacher will also provide specialized educational support and/or one-on-one instruction and guidance to students – to ensure quality of instruction, effective programming, and adequate documentation towards positive educational gain, per government and private foundation contractual requirements. Performs other duties as required.
Program Quality
Ensures programming quality based on quality of instruction, and high post-test rate and educational gain. Conducts creative and engaging lessons to teach English comprehension and speaking (and some reading and writing skills) to adults – specifically, conduct ESOL performance assessments & student/participant satisfaction, i.e., administer various quantitative assessments (BEST Plus & BEST Literacy) to each student to formally evaluate the student’s readiness to take the post-test. Assist with maintaining and/or enhancing enrollment number and retention rates, as well as the evaluation and management of ESOL programming and help provide direction for current and future adult learning programs.
Class Management and Enrollment/Retention
Helps to maintain student files and records by monitoring student attendance and other student-related documentation and record for submission to supervisor. Assists with intake and assessment of students, then their follow-ups towards positive outcomes. Recommends appropriate materials to students, including assisting students with computer-assisted instruction and small group instruction. Establishes relationships with: community leaders, community based organizations, social service organizations, and potential clients in order to expand ALP/NAP (ESOL) program offerings. Stays abreast of current issues related to NYSED’s adult education programming.
Professional Development/Training and ESOL Advocacy
Participates in orientation and staff meetings and training as required, specifically work with ALP/NAP (ESOL) management staff, Literacy/ESOL Specialists, other teachers, TAs, and volunteers to assess students' English comprehension and speaking abilities and provide suggestions on improvement of curriculum and materials. Facilitates special adult education events and participate in program booths at community festivals and events.
Staff/Volunteer Engagement
Helps to facilitate and/or attend staff meetings and staff development trainings, specifically work with Literacy/ESOL Specialists, other teachers, TAs, and volunteers to track student achievement over time. Participate in at least two teacher observations per year (that includes a pre-observation discussion and a post-observation debriefing for evaluation purposes) - while ensuring that performance plans are being followed through timely reviews and by providing feedback for improvement. Likewise, coordinate with other staff to help plan and implement volunteer pre-placement training, orientation, feedback, and evaluation.
Position Information
- The rate of pay for this position is $46.00 per hour.
- The schedule for this position will include Saturdays and evenings as well as site visits for scheduled teacher observation and other feedback meetings, as required with a maximum of 17 hours per week.
- This is a non-union position.
- Part-time positions do not offer any medical or health benefits.
Education and Experience/Qualifications
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required. MA in TESOL or related field; also, adult education certification and/or 2-3 experience teaching adults are preferred, as well as TABE and/or BEST Plus/BEST ESOL certification. Some evening and weekend hours are required. Knowledge of computers: Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet. Strong customer service skills; also, reliable, responsible, punctual, patient, flexible and courteous. Knowledge of National Reporting System is a plus.
