ESOL Instructor P/T

Position Title:  P/T Evening ESOL Teacher
Hours:  16 hours a week (6:30pm – 9:30pm plus one hour prep each night), Monday through Thursday
Hourly Rate:  $28/hour
Reports to:  Director of Adult Education

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and teach contextualized, participatory, and interactive English classes to a diverse set of adult immigrant students.  
  • Create lessons that improve the student’s ability to speak, understand, read and write the English language, and lessons that provide relevant vocabulary and skills designed to improve the quality of life for the newest New Yorkers.   Classes should be student-centered, with an ongoing assessment of student needs and interests, and lessons should be created to reflect those interests, which often include employment, family, health, access to services, community, civics, etc.  When required by funders, integration of specific topics must be documented.
  • Responsible for taking daily attendance, maintaining accurate student records, pre- and post- Best Plus testing, and progress notes, as required by funders.  
  • Participate in program improvement by:  1) bringing innovative teaching practices to the classroom and sharing them with colleagues 2) working on improvement of Adult Education curriculum 3) Leveraging technology use (laptops and smart phones) in the classroom, 4) giving feedback on processes and procedures created during the year, 5) Create learning communities and networks within each classroom by focusing on student-centered learning and activities focused on group work, and 6) creatively using the city as a “classroom” (e.g. field trips in museums)
  • Maintain confidentiality when it comes to the use of student information from ASISTS, and when receiving private information from students in the classroom. 
  • Participate in activities to improve student recruitment and retention, such as outreach in the classroom and on-line, or community outreach.  
  • Responsible for management of own working hours, timely submission of timesheets, and working with Director and administrative staff by making sure there are lessons plans prepared for the class for planned absence or in case of emergency or unplanned absence. 
  • Maintain communication with Program Coordinator about administrative issues, such as classroom scheduling issues, contacting students, and progress notes.
  • Other tasks will be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s required.  Foreign credentials are acceptable.  Master’s a plus.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching adults.
  • Highly organized, excellent written and verbal communication skills; high interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines, self-motivated, solution-oriented, and resourceful.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when dealing with private information.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of immigrant and adult learner issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel), Email, and Internet.
  • Best Plus 2.0 Certification Required
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Russian verbal and written competencies a plus.

Full-time ESOL Program Supervisor Needed
CAMBA is looking for an experienced and resourceful adult literacy professional to support, coach, monitor, and facilitate the professional development of its ESOL instructors and continue to enhance the overall quality of services provided to the students.

​The position is full-time! The work hours are 9am to 5pm (Tuesday and Thursday) and 12:30 to 8:30 pm (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).

BA/BS in education or a related field required. MA/MS preferred. Min. 2 years of experience as an adult literacy program supervisor required. Min. 2 years of experience with ESOL instruction, whole language and Freirian methodologies, BEST Plus, and BEST Literacy highly preferred. Excellent communication, organization, leadership, computer, database, and internet skills required.

Part-time HSE Math Instructor Needed
CAMBA seeks a part-time HSE math instructor to work at its Education Center (885 Flatbush Avenue – Brooklyn, N.Y.)
The class will meet in the morning from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, Monday through Friday.

Candidates must have a B.A/B.S. in education or a related field; Masters preferred. Candidates must have taught ABE/GED/TASC preparation for at least 2 years and must have experience administering TABE and working with low income and/or ethnically diverse populations.

For this position, the ability to effectively teach at least high-school-level Arithmetic, Geometry, Algebra, and Function to adults and young adults is a must. Applicants with experience in computer-assisted instruction, who are self-starters, and highly organized are preferred.

The Jewish Community Council of GCI is looking to hire an experienced Adult ESL instructor to provide Workplace Literacy/ESL instruction to adults in the Bronx.

Position: Adult Basic Education (ABE)/ High School Equivalency (HSE) Teacher (Spanish)
Days: Evenings 6p to 9pm (Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays); Saturdays 9a - 2p; with two and half (2.5) hours of prep per week.

Position Summary:
The Spanish Adult Basic Education / High School Equivalency Teacher is a part-time position that includes teaching Academics and Test Taking Skills to adults in preparation to take the HSE Exam.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach Spanish Adult Basic Education / High School Equivalency class.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff regarding lesson plans, etc.
  • Take daily attendance and maintain minimum student attendance as outlined by contracting agency or funder.
  • Complete in-take forms and create a file for each student.
  • Maintain Monthly Progress reports for all students.
  • Administer TABE and TASC Readiness Exam for students in each class.
  • Maintain communication with Adult Education Program Director about class activities and progress.
  • Submit student attendance, in-take forms, monthly progress reports, and testing information to Office Manager by established deadlines.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field.
  • At minimum two years’ experience teaching Spanish ABE/HSE and/or GED is required.
  • Knowledge of the TASC Exam
  • Bilingual (English /Spanish)
  • Experience working with urban adults and immigrants.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, verbal, and written skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced, challenging, and constantly changing environment.

The Educational Specialist has the overall responsibility for the development and implementation of the academic curriculum, program compliance and quality assurance for the ESOL CIVICS Program at Union Settlement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Design, implement and recommend academic curriculum needs for students.
  • Meet with Program Director to establish and review the academic learning curriculum of the program.
  • Provide Intake, Assessment and Orientation for each enrollee.
  • Research and develop new resources and materials to enhance the teaching curricula.
  • Provide class instruction in ESL.
  • Administer BEST PLUS tests at intake and regularly thereafter to monitor and document enrollee progress.
  • Maintain Milestone performance files for each enrollee.
  • Maintain and submit daily enrollee attendance. Follow-up with enrollees as needed to ensure their continued participation. Maintain office hours.
  • Meet with students individually each cycle to review progress and need for additional help.
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports on the enrollees and the classes.
  • Prepare, Review, coordinate, and submit weekly Educational Lesson Plans.
  • Make educational referrals.
  • Provide progress reports as needed
  • Attend Staff development training, program meetings and related conferences.
 
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist students with their academic projects, homework and provide enrichment programming services.
  • Assist Program Coordinator and Program Director as needed.  Perform other duties as assigned.
            
SPECIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Master Degree  in any relevant subject  with minimum three year teaching experience or  BA/BS and minimum three years educational teaching experience.


SPECIFICATIONS FOR EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Experience working in classroom setting.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Experience with leading large and small group instruction.
  • Computer literate, including experience with all Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in developing and implementing curricula preferred.
  • Classroom management and overall strong organizational skills preferred.
 
SPECIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Regularly required to talk, hear, walk, stand, & sit. 
  • Able to climb stairs if necessary.
  • Able to operate a computer keyboard, mouse & office equipment.
  • Ability to read printed materials and computer screens.
  • Able to travel to multiple locations as needed.

Intake Advisor F/T

The Adult Learning Centers (ALCs) at  are the direct service providers of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the New York Public Library.  We use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, ALCs have taken on the charge to expand ESOL instruction in the Library.
​
The Intake Advisors’ primary functions are to recruit new students, determine their eligibility through testing and interview, to place students in a class, to monitor attendance, and retain students in the program.  Additionally, Intake Advisors follow up with students who have attendance problems to identify barriers for participation and encourage continuation in the program. They are responsible for entering and maintaining program data and communicating results to the Hub Manager.
