Company Description: 
CUNY Start and Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) are two of CUNY’s most successful programs. CUNY Start helps students prepare for college-level coursework and reduce or eliminate any remedial needs prior to starting credit-bearing courses. ASAP students are provided essential college supports to ensure high rates of college graduation. Both programs have demonstrated outstanding outcomes for their students. Math Start, under the auspices of the CUNY Start program and based on its curriculum and pedagogy, is an intensive 8-week program for CUNY students who want to increase their math proficiency before starting credit-bearing classes.
CUNY Start has received a four-year grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to serve transition aged youth from foster care who wish to pursue associate degrees at CUNY, but who have significant remedial needs in reading, writing, and/or math based on their CUNY Assessment Test scores. The grant, known as the Foster Care Initiative supports the development of strategic partnerships with foster care agencies and the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) to create a college success/ graduation pipeline for 325 college-bound foster care youth into CUNY Start/Math Start and the University’s acclaimed Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP).

Job Description: 
CUNY Start/Math Start is seeking a highly motivated, self-starter with outstanding administrative and communication skills to provide administrative support the CUNY Start/ Math Start and FCI programs for 19 hours weekly. Reporting to the Associate Director of CUNY Start/Math Start, the Program Assistant supports the daily operational needs of the successful operations of CUNY Start/Math Start and FCI program. 

Salary(if applicable): 
$20.00 per hour 

Schedule: 
Monday-Thursday: 10:00am-3:00pm or 1:00pm to 6:00pm
Tuesday-Friday: 9:00am-2:00pm or 1:00pm-6:00pm

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • Proactive, detail orientated and flexible with strong organizational skills
  • Computer proficiency skills using standard administrative and academic systems and programs, especially Microsoft Word, Excel and Access and the ability and interest to learn new computer and tracking systems

    • Handle sensitive information with maturity
    • Multi-task and to prioritize multiple responsibilities
    • Work collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced work environment with time-sensitive goals

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide daily administrative support to the Central Office CUNY Start/Math Start Central Office Team
  • Collaborate with CUNY Start/Math Start’s Central Office and campus-based administrative teams to support smooth implementation and coordination of the CUNY Start/Math Start and FCI programs
  • Support operations related to recruiting and hiring campus-based teachers and advisement staff
  • Schedule meeting and organize training events
  • Prepare training and program materials
  • Draft meeting notes and planning templates
  • Send emails, update records and respond to inquiries from campus program staff
  • Maintain and input data record
  • Support procurement and reconciliation of outstanding invoices
  • Communicate with campus staff regarding basic program information, program planning, staffing and upcoming events
  • Coordinate special projects and ad hoc meeting requests
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Microsoft Certified Computer Instructor P/T

Program Overview:
Microsoft Certified Computer Education classes are a part of COJO Flatbush’s Adult Education division whose objective is to assist individuals to become gainfully employed. The computer instructor will lead classes, instruct students in Microsoft Office product related subjects, develop curriculum and materials, design lessons, maintain an engaging and successful learning environment, collaborate with program staff and maintain program data. The computer instructor will guide and mentor students towards the goal of obtaining MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certification.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain classrooms conducive to learning and facilitate successful participant engagement.
  • Establish clear expectations and encourage student accountability. Implement quality instructional practices, and vary methods of instruction, to encourage participation and retention
  • Teach classes and conduct whole group, small group and individualized instruction.
  • Teach Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook) to students.
  • Conduct regular assessment/post-tests to determine advancement and readiness for certification testing.
  • Guide and mentor students towards the goal of obtaining MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certification.
  • Arrange and schedule with an appropriate Microsoft certified testing site for student MOS certification testing.
  • Maintain timely and complete documentation as required.
  • Participate in mandated program and agency meetings.

Qualifications:
  • Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) credentials required. Proof of active MCT membership required.
  • At least one (1) year MOS directed teaching experience required.
  • Bachelor’s /Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Preference will be given for licensed computer teachers and/or qualified candidates with substantial (2+ years) programming experience in at least one major computer language (C++, Java, Python) in addition to the above requirements.
  • Ability to teach all the MS Office component subject areas (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to incorporating innovative teaching methods.
  • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and capitalize on student strengths.
  • Strong computer skills, including multi-year experience with all components of the Microsoft Office Suite.

Make the Road New York operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership of 20,000 low-income New Yorkers, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.

MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our Education Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation and in-school and after-school youth programs. Our Community Organizing Projects help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. Our Departments of Legal, Health & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) civil rights issues.

Current Opening: Make the Road New York's Adult Literacy Team is seeking experienced, bilingual/Spanish proficient ESOL instructor to teach 1 class for 6 months for a new city grant.  (The possibility remains of work again beginning in Aug or September 2018, should the grant be renewed.)   The instructor will teach ESOL as well as do class planning, materials creation, individualized follow up with students, and some meetings and professional development.  
 
The class is in Bushwick, Brooklyn for ​January- June 2018.  
CLASS SCHEDULE: Brooklyn: Tues & Thursday- 6-9 pm, Beginner level 
 
Total hrs per week:
You will work 9.5-10 hrs/wk (6 hrs for teaching, 3 prep, .5 calls/texts with students) +.5 hr/wk or 1 hr every other week for support meetings
 
Strongly Preferred: Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL; experience working in community based social justice organizations; interest in collaboration and professional development with team members.
Required: BA, at least 3 yrs. experience teaching ESOL to adults & multiple ESOL level classes. Must be creative, organized, and committed to thematic instruction and learner-centered, participatory education; must be able to speak some Spanish with students outside of class if not occasionally within class; Sense of humor/good team player a plus. Excellent computer skills, BEST Plus certification.
 
Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. Typically, the hourly rate is in the mid $20's but you're paid 1/2 hr prep for every teaching hour so it comes out on par with other community based salary rates.

The Education Fund of District Council 37 is seeking a part-time instructor to teach basic writing skills to an adult population.  These students seek to improve their writing skills for better performance at work or for personal goals, such as writing a short report or essay. The class is held on Thursday evenings and begins in January and ends in March.  It may be repeated again April through June.  The location is downtown Manhattan. 
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Administer assessments to gauge students’ abilities
  • Design a syllabus based on students’ needs
  • Create engaging lesson plans
  • Maintain records of attendance
  • Provide instruction to a mixed level group
  • Utilize technology when possible
 
Requirements:
  • Experience teaching basic writing skills in an adult education setting

Volunteer Instructor HSE P/T

High School Equivalency Volunteer Teachers: Spring 2018
​
Teachers will instruct adults in high school level classes to prepare them to take the TASC (high school equivalency) official exam. Depending on your availability, teachers must commit to 2-5 hours of teaching per week with some preparation. You may choose to teach Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and/or Science classes one or two days a week. Morning classes run from 10:30am - 1:30pm and evening classes from 6:00pm - 8:30pm. The spring semester begins on February 5th and ends on Ma 10th.

The High School Equivalency Program is part of the comprehensive adult education and workforce development network at Community Impact, Columbia University which helps adults move toward college and employment opportunities with livable wages.

Strong English skills are required, as well as an interest in teaching, energy, motivation, and a commitment to getting involved and making a positive difference in the community. Teachers are required to attend at least 3 training sessions during the term.

The Education Fund of District Council 37 is seeking two part-time educational/vocational counselors to work primarily at our downtown facility during the evening programs commencing January 2018.

Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting workshops for students enrolled in classes and occasional workshops for non-enrolled members
  • Meet with students on an individual basis to provide academic and vocational advisement
  • Direct students to support services needed​
  • Maintain detailed records of sessions
  • Designing counseling brochures, flyers and presentations

ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher (P/T)

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center is seeking a dynamic part-time ABE/HSE Reading & Writing Teacher to work with a diverse group of adult learners.  The class meets twice a week for three hours each day. The position begins in January 2018 and continues through June 2018; starting salary is $32/hr. The Lehman ALC is currently hiring for evening classes.
 
Essential duties include:                                                                                  
  • Providing high-quality theme-based instruction to help students develop their reading and writing skills
  • Designing engaging lessons to help students foster a love of reading and learning
  • Collaborating with staff and teachers to develop best teaching practices and enriching materials
  • Reviewing and communicating class progress with both staff and students
  • Actively partaking in in-house teacher meetings and citywide professional development
  • Maintaining class attendance and communicating with students about program participation issues
  • Participating in new student orientations and program-wide events and activities

The main responsibilities for the instructor are to work with ESOL Program Manager  and the Hub Manager to implement the goals and activities of the adult education program.  To teach and assist adult ESOL students in improving their English skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing).  To instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals. To assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records.:

The Center for Family Life is looking for a part time English as a Second Language Instructor. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist with outreach and recruitment for all ESL classes offered at Center for Family Life
  • Customize instructional materials by building on own training and experience to create high quality lesson plans to instruct adults in English as a Second Language
  • Register students at the start of each cycle completing all required paperwork
  • Assess each student's level of ability utilizing the Best Plus 2 test to ensure appropriate placement
  • Communicate with program director regarding apparent barriers to student success (e.g., child daycare needs, possible health/housing issues, etc.)
  • Maintain daily student attendance records. Follow up with students who might be lacking in attendance.
  • Prepare reports on students’ attendance and progress, as required
  • Maintain and update students' learning portfolios
  • Coordinate with program director regarding next steps in student's progress toward achieving their goals
  • Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports
Position Requirements:
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree (B.A.) required
  • BEST Plus certification preferred
  • At least two years of experience serving adult learners, teaching ESL / ESOL
  • Experience working with immigrant communities
