Job Title: ABE/HSE Instructor – Literacy/Social Studies Specialist
Department: Education & Career Services

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ABE/HSE Literacy/Social Studies Specialist is a part-time position responsible for providing instruction to ABE/HSE classes in the Adult Education division of the Education & Career Services department in conjunction with a Math Specialist. The ABE/HSE instructor is responsible for teaching basic literacy up to high school level reading and writing alongside GED social studies concepts to young adult and adult learners enrolled in education classes (depending on class assignment). Classes will be taught hybrid. We offer both morning and evening classes. This is an in-person position. We offer morning (9-12) and evening (6-9) classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and facilitate curriculum for ABE and HSE instruction based on educational and Common Core Standards.
  • Instruct beginning learners as they develop basic literacy concepts.
  • Provide literacy and social studies instruction to prepare students for the test to obtain their high school equivalency diploma, i.e., GED.
  • Collaborate with the Math Specialist to coordinate class activities and conference on students.
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans and educational activities for program participants.
  • Monitor students' engagement and classroom conduct.
  • Maintain attendance records and submit attendance logs to program staff.
  • Complete biweekly case notes according to funders’ mandates.
  • Submit lesson plans weekly
  • Host guest speakers, volunteers and/or alternate programming when needed.
  • Maintain an active Google Classroom.
  • Utilize technology in the classroom to enrich the educational experience
  • Attend professional development sessions and program meetings.
  • Initiate and participate in case conferencing sessions as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BA/BS required
  • MA strongly preferred
  • Minimum three years experience in an educational setting required
  • Experience teaching multiple ages with various needs
  • Experience using technology to enhance learning
  • Dedication to creating an inclusive classroom
  • Must have superb presentation & classroom presence and be a dynamic instructor
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
  • Bilingual English/Spanish helpful but not required

SALARY/BENEFITS:
33$ per hour plus planning time (one hour per class session)

ESOL Literacy Specialist/ Specialist III (Full Time)
Overview
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) provides ESOL and adult literacy instruction throughout the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island. While  professional teachers facilitate free series-based formal instruction for adult patrons from a 0 to 8th-grade level, AELL also offers informal ESOL programming in less-intensive drop-in sessions.  The ESOL Literacy Specialist III contributes to the Library’s informal ESOL program, facilitating staff and volunteer training opportunities, launching programming across the branch library system, and creating pilot instructional offerings while modeling best practices in English instruction.

This position is eligible for a performance based upgrade to $68,963 upon one year of successful performance.

Responsibilities
  • Create and provide pre-service and in-service training to branch staff and volunteers in programming designed for non-native English speakers, expanding ESOL learning opportunities throughout the Library.
  • Innovate and pilot new ESOL Literacy course offerings, which foster language development, civic engagement, digital literacy, and career readiness.
  • Develop curricula for new and existing informal offerings for adult ESOL and Literacy students throughout the NYPL system (citizenship, conversation groups, computer-assisted instruction, writing workshops, etc)
  • Teach sessions that model the services being developed (lab environment) 
  • Participate in AELL information sessions and intake process,
  • Collect and analyze data for program reporting to assure program goals are carried out. 

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications
  • Master’s Degree in TESOL, Education, Linguistics, or a related field 
Required Experience
  • Three years of professional development and supervision skills within an educational setting 
  • Three years of successfully demonstrated experience teaching ESOL/literacy to adults at a basic literacy level who have limited English proficiency (LEP)
  • Successfully demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Zoom
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning,  instructional software, video, audio and distance learning.
  • Lesson plan creation using a backward design approach
Required Skills
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of current theory and practice in adult education with a focus on language acquisition and literacy development.
  • Successfully demonstrated experience facilitating online synchronous ESOL and/or ABE instruction using Zoom or Google Meet 
  • Successfully demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability in curriculum creation.

Lead Instructor/ Specialist II (Full time)
Overview
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) provides  ESOL and adult literacy instruction throughout the New York Public Library system. Professional teachers offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELL has taken on the charge to expand ESOL instruction both in the Library and remotely.

The Specialist II position is responsible for delivering formal classes in ESOL/Literacy and specialized workshops necessary to increase instructional intensity and student persistence. The Specialist II is responsible for entering and maintaining student data related to this instruction. This position also contributes to the student intake, registration, and assessment of students which happens between each cycle.

This position is eligible for a performance based upgrade to $60,574 after one year of successful performance

Responsibilities
  • Teach formal classes in ESOL and basic literacy in both in-person and online formats to assist adult ESOL/Literacy students in improving their English skills.
  • Provide specialized workshops (citizenship, WANY, numeracy, etc.) that promote language and literacy acquisition at various levels.
  • Prepare lesson plans that align with the curriculum.
  • Work as part of the student intake team at system-wide student information sessions and registrations. 
  • Maintain program information using ASISTS database (student attendance, assessment, demographics, etc.)

Queens Community House (QCH) is a multi-site, multi-service settlement house that serves the diverse population of Queens through a broad network of programs and services for children and youth, adults, and families and older Adults. We are a modern interpretation of the traditional settlement house, bringing to our work current best practices, cost-effective management, innovative leadership and a passion for social and economic justice.
 
The Literacy Coordinator is responsible for identifying suitable age-appropriate curricula, helping staff create age and developmentally appropriate activities and lesson plans, and overseeing implementation of program activities. The Coordinator will also have a key role in coaching and developing staff to foster continuous quality improvement (e.g., through data-informed decision-making, effective supervision and professional development). 
 
Responsibilities:
  • Work with our 15 school and center-based sites to create and develop a coordinated family literacy approach and activities for QCH.
  • Work with QCH leadership to construct a long-term plan for fully embedding and sustaining literacy as an agency-wide focus.
  • Work with the citywide campaign to expand family literacy programming and establish partnerships with literacy organizations.
  • Work with and train the Education Specialists at each of the school and center-based sites to review all lesson plans and ensure proper alignment to Family Literacy best practices around family literacy and DOE standards.
  • Assist participants in actively achieving increased comprehension and retention of specific subject material, and improve academic skills in designated areas.
  • Support staff in execution of lesson plans, academic activities, and give constructive feedback. Provide coaching on classroom management and other areas.
  • Create and maintain a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere that is consistent and sensitive to the needs of participants with learning, emotional, or behavioral differences.
 
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Education; teaching credentials a plus.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience working with youth in a teaching, group work, or session facilitation capacity.
  • Knowledge of NYS Common Core Standards; experience in curriculum development and implementation in secondary education.
  • Exceptional coaching and problem solving skills that will support, develop, and evaluate staff.

General Description 
The CUNY Fatherhood Academy (CFA) is a comprehensive program designed to promote responsible parenting and foster economic stability for unemployed and underemployed young fathers through education, employment, and personal development. Increased familial engagement, attaining a High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma and finding gainful employment are all essential goals of the CFA. The program’s central focus is to help young fathers prepare for and enroll into college or training programs, with the understanding that earning a college degree is the most effective path toward providing long-term economic sustainability for themselves and their families. The program is targeted to serve Black and Latino fathers, ages 18–24, from throughout New York City. Under the NYC Mayor’s Young Men’s Initiative, the CUNY Fatherhood Academy is expanding to a new site at Kingsborough Community College.
Under the supervision of the Director of CFA, the Part Time HSE Instructor will provide participants academic instruction on literacy/social studies and work collaboratively with program staff to identify and address specific academic and personal needs of each student.

General Duties
  • Provide specialized academic instruction to target population while assessing student performance to determine readiness for TASC exam;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Common Core and TASC; extensive understanding of core subject areas on TASC;
  • Ability to respond effectively to feedback and adjust teaching strategies and materials in order to motivate students and respond to student needs;
  • Offer comprehensive general advising and guidance to students on TASC subjects as needed;
  • Ability to integrate new theories, concepts, practices, innovations, or techniques relevant to the TASC exam into standard instructional materials;
  • Assist with monitoring, tracking and tallying student data for reports and program analysis;
  • Assist with identifying and coordinating supplemental instruction support services for participants;
  • Assist in the development of supplemental learning materials and activities to meet varying academic needs of students;
  • Strong presentation, verbal and interpersonal communication skills to successfully work with and present to diverse learners and audiences;
  • Experience working with linguistically, culturally and academically diverse students;
  • Facilitation experience in adult or developmental education using a holistic and strengths-based approach to student development preferred

Other Duties 
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, students, and internal and external constituents;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with and convey simple to complex concepts, processes, and practices to peers, supervisors, and students; ability to listen and respond to the concerns/ideas of others; and
  • Ability to write clearly and produce/edit accurate, well-organized, and understandable lessons

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years related experience

  • Experience counseling and working with students with development math/reading needs
  • Knowledge of existing academic standards and familiarity with Common Core Learning Standards, TASC preparation, and college placement exams
  • H/she must be able to demonstrate good organization skills, positive interpersonal skills, and excellent communication skills
  • Strong facilitation, training, and professional development skills
  • The ideal candidate must demonstrate expertise in the development of learning skills and learning strategies, presentation and group facilitation experience. The candidate must also have experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating workshops, strong writing and oral communication skills
  • Evening hours may be required
  • The ideal candidate will also have experience working with the target population and experience working in a college or university setting.
