ABE/HSE Instructor F/T

Position Summary:
​The Fortune Society is seeking to fill the position of Teacher, who, under the supervision of the Director of Education, will be responsible for facilitating dynamic interdisciplinary instruction at a variety Adult Basic Education (ABE) levels, including High School Equivalency (HSE). The Teacher will assist with providing standardized and alternate assessment to support students’ education attainment and goals.   

Location:
Long Island City

Days/Hours:
Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, maybe required to work one evening per week, subject to change depending on program needs

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design and facilitate innovative and engaging interdisciplinary (Reading, Math, Science, Language Arts & Social Studies) educational curricula for adult basic education through HSE students that leverages best practices in Adult Education principles and instruction to develop a model that will help student’s achieve educational outcomes;
  • Collaboratively work with intake staff to conduct outreach, orientation, testing, and student interviews to provide initial assessment and help place students in the appropriate class;
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student progress, including standardized tests and alternative assessment;
  • Maintain regular communication with students’ counselors in other Fortune departments;
  • Monitoring student attendance to achieve a 80% attendance rate at each weekly session;
  • Co-planning educational and career field trips with education staff Enter electronic attendance data, maintain student attendance logs, progress and test folders;
  • Contribute data to internal and external reports on the development and progress of Fortune’s educational program;
  • Contribute to the development and expansion of the education program;
  • Participate in staff meetings and other staff development activities; Assist in planning special events; and
  • Perform other duties as needed. 
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Familiarity with Adult Basic Education, Pre-HSE and/or HSE Proficiency in computer applications, such as MS Word and Excel; 
  • Familiarity with models of adult literacy education; 
  • Experience with students involved in the criminal justice system;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to engage and motivate students and volunteers;
  • Commitment to developing innovative teaching methods; and

  • Relevant personal experience is a plus.  
 
Travel Requirements:   
May require travel to our Harlem location.

Substitute ESOL Teachers P/T

The Adult Education Program at Queens Community House is looking for Substitute English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Teachers to join our diverse, multilingual, and talented teaching staff.   We have classes during the day (9am-11:30am and 12-2:30pm) and also in the evenings (6:30-9:30pm) from Monday through Thursday.   Our teaching philosophy is simple:  we teach English that our adult immigrant students can use as soon as they leave the classroom.

Responsibilities

The Substitute Teacher will teach the lesson plan, if available, as outlined by the absent teacher or the Program Coordinator.   If lesson plan is not available, the Substitute Teacher may bring prepared lessons that improve students’ ability to speak, understand, read and write the English language, and lessons that provide relevant vocabulary and skills designed to improve quality of life to a diverse set of adult immigrant students.   Class instruction should be student-centered, and should reflect student needs and interests, which include employment, family health, access to services, community, civics, etc. 

The Substitute Teacher is expected to meet and instruct assigned classes in our Queens location and at the times designated, and to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.  The Substitute teacher will work with the director and administrative staff to ensure successful achievement of curriculum goals and administrative duties (e.g. taking attendance for the class, timesheet).  The Substitute Teacher may also be invited to conduct BEST Plus tests when needed. 
Salary: $28 per hour

Qualifications
  • BA required, MA preferred.
  • At least two years’ experience teaching ESOL to adults in a community based environment.
  • Best Plus 2.0 Certified required.
  • Bilingual (Spanish or Russian) a plus.

Part-time Contextualized ESOL Instructor
Duties:  Provide contextualized ESOL instruction for workplace-literacy
 
General Description:
Hostos Community College Adult Learning Center is seeking an experienced ESOL instructor to develop a contextualized ESOL curriculum for workplace instruction. The instructor will be responsible for daily classroom instruction, student assessment, and curriculum development. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching workplace literacy for students of English as a second language. The instructor will be responsible for creating a contextualized curriculum and lesson plans that are related to the needs of an off campus employer to help improve English language skills of ESOL students who desire to secure employment.

Part-time Educational Case Manager (ECM)
 
The Center for Immigrant Education and Training (CIET) has an employment opening for a Part-time/ Temporary Educational Case Manager (ECM).
 
The primary responsibilities of the position will be:
 
  • Counsel and advise clients on all their career, academic and social service needs
  • Summarize student intake forms to assess student needs, coordinate appropriate referrals/events, and incorporate guest speakers for informative workshops
  • Conduct college and career workshops for student clients
  • Assist students with completing education and employment plans
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a social work, counseling or a related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Relevant experience in counseling individuals and/or leading workshops
  • Strong awareness of the barriers facing immigrants looking to integrate into the US workforce and academic environment
  • Some weekday evening hours required (approximately 5-8 pm)
  • Seeking a professional individual familiar with strengths-based, culturally competent approaches
 
This part-time, grant-funded position will be scheduled for approximately 19 hours a week for a 6-month period (i.e., January to June 2017) at an estimated salary of $38.00 an hour.

Staff Developer/Contract Manager
Job Description
  • Assist in developing and supporting adult basic education and High School Equivalency (HSE)  programs
  • Provide staff development workshops and technical assistance (including model lessons, curriculum development and demonstration classes) to instructional staff from funded literacy programs, with topics based on a needs assessment derived from surveys, site visits, program observations, and meetings with key community based organization (CBO) personnel.
  • Monitor programs through regular on-site visits that include: class observations, records review, etc. to determine adherence to established standards.
  • Remain abreast of latest research findings in the field of literacy by doing periodic research and maintaining membership/ contact with leading professional organizations, universities, fellow agencies, etc. - Analyze program data in order to evaluate program performance and submit reports to management. - Review and approve program Workscope, budgets and other requests.
  • Participate in and facilitates other unit and agency projects, as appropriate

Minimum Qualification Requirements
  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or 
  2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or 
  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience

Preferred Skills 
  • Demonstrated background and expertise in literacy/ adult basic education/ HSE programming. 
  • Three to five years of experience in education (preferably providing ABE and/or GED instructional services). 
  • Demonstrated experience in program evaluation and professional development 
  • Possess strong communication and analytic skills (both written and verbal);

POSITION: ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE) INSTRUCTOR 

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part-time, 9 hours per week 

JOB SUMMARY:  
Provide Adult Basic Education instruction for the RiseBoro Community Partnership in Brooklyn.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Effectively teach reading comprehension, standard English grammar, essay writing, math (arithmetic, geometry, & algebra), and test-taking skills to students.
  • Must be comfortable with learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach.
  • Teachers are responsible for creating her/his own curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans, integrating technology.
  • Provide instruction in math and/or literacy, including group instruction and one-on-one tutoring.
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and in class quizzes.
  • Integrate technology into instructional strategies.
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention
  • Meet with Program Coordinator to discuss participants’ progress.
  • Attend a minimum of 18 hours of trainings/workshops (off site at the LAC Center or on site using computer based webinars).
  • Attend staff development meetings on a monthly basis to receive assistance with computer based lessons plans, computer based activities for classroom usage, utilizing laptops and smart-boards in the classroom.
  • Complete other assignments as directed by Program Director and Program Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in related field; license to teach with the NYC Department of Education preferred. Two years teaching experience required.

Part-time ABS Spanish Literacy Instructor at LaGuardia Community College

The Adult Basic Skills department is seeking a dynamic, hard working educator who has significant experience teaching diverse adult, non-traditional high school equivalency population in Spanish at the basic education level, including knowledge of the New York State –approved Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC). Specific experience teaching reading, writing and math in Spanish .

Candidates must have demonstrated experience with developing theme-based and interdisciplinary adult education curricula, designing student-centered classroom environments, and utilizing a variety of assessment methods.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor of Arts/Science degree, plus at least three (3) years adult education and/or non-traditional teaching experience, along with relevant adult education professional development required.
