Part-Time ESOL Teacher
Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is the 6th largest library system in the United States, with 61 neighborhood libraries located throughout the Borough of Brooklyn. BPL offers free programs and services for all ages and stages of life, including a large selection of books in more than 30 languages, author talks, literacy programs and public computers.

The Outreach Services Department is seeking ESOL teachers to teach beginning community English language classes. The ESOL teacher, will teach listening, speaking, reading & writing to adults.
 
Responsibilities: 
  • Engage students in a learning community and facilitate contextualized lessons tailored to student needs and abilities
  • Prepare lesson plans that utilize the BPL Community ESOL Curriculum and library resources 
  • Complete administrative duties in a timely manner
  • Provide feedback and support that encourages the learners to develop both their language skills and their learning autonomy
  • Participate in library and industry professional development and training; set individual learning and development goals and actively seek opportunities to further develop teaching practice
  • Work independently and collaboratively

Qualifications: 
  • BA/BS and certificate in TESOL required. MA in TESOL a plus
  • Knowledge of TESOL methodology and techniques; experience with multi-cultural, low level adult learners
  • Strong Proficiency in the use of office equipment including computers, data projector, smart boards, smart TVs, printers and copiers
  • Ability to perform general clerical functions including maintaining accurate records and compiling information and statistics
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills
  • Creative and ability to solve problems with a strong commitment to adult literacy and learning
  • Must be able to work a varied schedule, including potential evenings and weekends
  • Proficient utilizing Zoom and Microsoft Teams
*Locations vary depending on the enrollment/registration.   *All classes are in-person and on-site.

Please note that this position is part-time position. 4 hours a week of instruction and 1 hour for class preparation. Rate of pay is $38 - $40/hr.

Case Manager - Adult Literacy Education

JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/ Objective
East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families, and the communities.  We seek a dynamic, hard-working, and creative team-player who shares our passion for providing exceptional services to children and families.

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Community Schools, the Case Manager will be key in the Community School and Workforce staff inter-disciplinary team whose purpose is to provide comprehensive educational and social emotional supports that enable participants to meet their learning, educational and employment goals. A primary focus for the Case Manager is to support our ALE participants throughout their process in the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and Workforce services. The Case Manager will communicate effectively with the Senior Director of Community Schools and Workforce team to coordinate student intake and interviews, tutoring and all other wrap around services needed for participants, who are enrolled in various classes, to succeed.

Essential Functions
  • Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Manage a caseload of approximately 50-100 participants per year; divided by cohorts.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with participants on caseload at all phases of the ALE program to track progress; meet individually at least twice per course with every adult participant.
  • Conduct daily attendance outreach and refer participants to support services as needed.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the Instructors and Career Development Specialists to ensure participants career goals are met.
  • Conduct one-on-one and small group counseling sessions with participants that support their academic, career and personal goals.
  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team with Instructors, Career Development Specialists, and Education and Employment Services Managers in providing onsite/co-location services.
  • Build and maintain Google shared database with case load of participants to track participant progress through career and education goal plans.
  • Participate in relevant departmental meetings, training, case conferences, workshops and other on/off site events.
  • Assist the program management staff in recruiting, interviewing, and maintaining participant records for each cohort of ALE.
  • Consult with teachers and provide feedback to participants on academic performance using a biweekly assessment.
  • Refer participants to academic and support services as needed.
  • Attend administrative meetings, program trainings, and staff development.
  • Educating participants and families about post-secondary options, colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing; advising participants and families as they go through the process and helping participants and families aspire realistically and choose wisely. 
  • Arrange monthly on-site/co-location family literacy events, special events, and extracurricular activities.

ESOL Instructor P/T

Masa is seeking a part time ESOL Teacher (approximately 10 hrs/week) to teach 1 beginner-level ESL class running February through the end of May 2024 on Mondays-Wednesdays from 9 am - 11 am. Classes are in-person at Masa's office in the South Bronx and instructors will be paid for prep and administrative time, in addition to class hours.  The course seeks to improve participants' English language skills and support them in building confidence in speaking English so that they feel better able to navigate the education systems, government offices, employer interactions, and other settings that can affect the immigrant experience.

The PT ESOL Teacher will work closely with the Adult Education Program Coordinator to ensure the course is interactive, engaging, and aligned to the interests of participating students.

Key responsibilities:
  • Planning, leading, and documenting weekly interactive and engaging lessons
  • Monitoring student progress and attendance
  • Reflecting on course successes and areas for growth and documenting these learnings

Requirements:
  • Availability Mondays-Wednesdays from 9-11 am from Feb 26th-May 29, 2024 (not including DOE holidays). 
  • Experience developing ESL curriculum and/or modifying existing curriculum to meet student needs
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching English to adults; TESOL or TOEFL certification strongly preferred
  • Experience working with immigrant parents a big plus
  • Highly reliable, organized and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Spanish language proficiency a plus but not required

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the functionality of the NAI office, maintaining effective filing and administrative systems, managing office inventory and purchases, managing participant use of laptops and ensuring daily inventory conducted; preparing internal and external reports, and updating documents as necessary.
  • Maintain up to date program flyers, marketing materials, class schedules, and New Americans Initiative Website.
  • Maintain internal case files, including but not limited to intake, goals and outcomes, pre and post testing, attendance, case notes and ensuring that supporting documentation is scanned and uploaded into the appropriate data portals.
  • Support with data input in all data systems, including ASISTS (Adult Student Information and Technical Assistance), DYCD Connect, AS400 and/or Salesforce and use databases to prepare program reports for internal, city and state use.
  • Communicate with participants, including providing program information, scheduling appointments, and drafting letters and other correspondence, as necessary.
  • Assist with the recruitment and support of volunteers.
  • Assist with reporting to government and private funders; tracking and reporting student data and achievement results.
  • Model the best practices of hospitality and positive culture.
  • This position supports all aspects of programming, including but not limited to community outreach, recruitment, and participant outreach.
  • Work enthusiastically as part of a team.
  • Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.
Desired Skills:
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Must be willing to work as part of a team and be able to establish positive relationships with participants, the community, collaborators and partnerships.
  • Minimum two years of experience in administration.
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, mental health, or a relevant field is preferred.
  • Ability and interest in working with diverse populations.
