​Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC), is currently recruiting for a new director of the Education & Career Services department. 

This is a senior management position reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the executive team (Executive Director, Chief Financial Officer, Director of Strategic Development and Operations, Director of Development, and the Director of Human Resources).

The position is responsible for providing leadership in the development and implementation of departmental vision and strategy in support of NMIC’s agency-wide mission to serve as a catalyst for positive change in the lives of the people in our community on their paths to secure and prosperous futures.

The Director of Education & Career Services will ensure a comprehensive set of client growth opportunities encompassing adult education, workforce training, and job development supporting the ultimate goal of moving community members into rewarding living wage careers.

Populations served include adults and young adults, individuals with limited English proficiency, and low-income community members with other education or employment barriers.

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Adult Literacy and Training, this position is responsible for implementing the STEM @3PM program in assigned schools. This position is also responsible for collaborating with teachers in promoting interdisciplinary STEM activities into the core curriculum.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Deliver STEM-oriented instruction through project-based learning methods.
  • Attends professional development and training related to STEM programs and methodologies, staying abreast of current research.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques, instructional media, and performance assessments, which guide the learning process toward curriculum goals and student learning.
  • Uses technology to promote learning, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Works directly with school administrators and staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of STEM initiatives and curriculum.
  • Organizes, develops, and coordinates special STEM events/activities.
  • Coaches teachers on STEM initiatives and instructional best practices in the STEM areas.
  • Serves as liaison to prospective or selected STEM vendors, to determine the best
  • resources, options and innovations that will optimize the learning experience for students and staff.
  • Initiates new programs that support the STEM vision.
  • Shares STEM events and activities through social media, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Follows the New York City District’s job description for teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters in Mathematics and/or Science and/or STEM preferred or related field. Bachelor of Science Degree and/or demonstrated experience in teaching in a classroom environment required.
  • Experience in delivering professional development to teachers.
  • Evidence of at least three (3) years of exemplary classroom teaching experience.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A proven track record in the use of a rich array of instructional methods, the analysis and use of data and technology to improve instruction, and the ability to build professional relationships, solve problems, and plan collaboratively.
  • Evidence of productive experience with problem-based learning.
  • Evidence of planning, organization, and time management skills that will bring structure and accountability to the position.
  • Proven ability to apply science and/or math content knowledge, formative assessment, and technology integration at a high level.
  • Deep understanding of student learning theory, brain-based learning, and differentiated instruction.
  • Deep understanding of NET-S, NGSS, and CCSS.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with teachers regarding student learning.
  • Desire to continue learning “what works” in classroom instruction.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Harlem Commonwealth Council’s Adult Literacy & Training Department offers exciting, cutting-edge youth and adult programs that focus in the areas of education, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), entrepreneurship, and computer skills training. These programs provide participants with opportunities for self-development and expression through enrichment/project-based curricula. 

The Adult Literacy & Training department is seeking to hire an Instructor to teach High School Equivalency (HSE) courses.  The Instructor must have a proven track record in literacy development and teaching adults in the area of HSE (traditional and contextualized instruction). The Instructor should be able to develop and/or implement curriculum and be able to assess and measure student progress. 

This is a 12 week course offered Monday thru Thursday from 9am – 12 pm.  The foundation of this course is in the belief that education is crucial for self-improvement and self-sufficiency and that it should be seen as an on-going process.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide HSE instruction to adult students, ages 18 & up, to help them obtain the necessary skills to be able to read, write, and compute proficiently in preparation for the HSE exam.

Instruct in the program in a manner that supports student retention and daily attendance consistent with the Adult Learning Common Core Standards while assisting students in meeting their education goals.  These duties will include the following:
  • Select, score, and interpret TABE exam
  • Deliver appropriate HSE instruction
  • Responsible for maintaining 75% average daily attendance of student roster
  • Conducts follow-up calls to students who are absent for two consecutive days
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate instructional programs
  • Establish and maintain a daily schedule of instruction
  • Provide group instruction as scheduled by the agency
  • Report attendance, test scores, and outcomes as requested by funders
  • Adhere to curriculum, as supported by Adult Education Common Core Standards

Provide indirect services to students:
  • Maintain documentation of evaluation, ongoing instructional programs, student progress, and communications
  • Prepare reports and collect data as requested by the Director of Adult Literacy & Training and required by private and public funders
  • Attend related meetings relevant to program and students
  • Consult counselors, administrators, and co-workers regarding HSE program
  • Present and interpret program to a variety of audiences in a variety of settings, if necessary
  • Consult with Director of Adult Literacy & Training on developing students’ educational plan
  • Provide a comfortable, supportive, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment
Professional Development:
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings of the ECD Division as required
  • Participate in professional development/in-service as required by funder
  • Participate in the supervision/evaluation process
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
  • Ability to set appropriate priorities, plan work systematically, and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of project-based learning and Youth Development principles
  • Demonstrated problem solving
  • Excellent organization, communication, and decision making skills
  • Able to manage multiple time sensitive assignments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, and/or other software applications
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Knowledge of adult student characteristics
  • Knowledge of adult basic education content areas
  • Ability to teach TABE content areas
  • Sensitivity to and experience working with diverse populations, and experience working with students of varying skill levels
  • Ability to organize data to produce student reports
  • Ability to make decisions concerning student instruction
  • Able to manage multiple time sensitive assignments
  • Excellent organization, communication, and decision making skills

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least two years of successful teaching experience with an adult population
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, and/or other software applications
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
  • Bachelor's degree required

The Vice President of Programs and Services at Queens Library  is responsible for conceiving, developing, implementing, managing, leading and improving library programs and special services system-wide.  Manages and coordinates the day to day operations of the Program and Services department including; New Americans Programs, Special Services, Government Grants, Job & Business Academy, Adult Learner Programs and age-level program coordination.  Motivates, coaches and mentors staff to deliver the products and services necessary to fulfill its mission.  Analyzes community information data to determine customer needs based upon demographic data and community needs.  Serves as the Library’s liaison to agencies and community based organizations to develop partnerships and funding opportunities that meet the needs of Library customers and the Queens communities.

Program/Teaching Assistant (PT)
The part-time non-exempt Program/Teaching Assistant is responsible for administrative and general office duties that support the Queens Library Rochdale Adult Learning Center program including data entry, doing intakes, ensuring classrooms and spaces are ready, supporting teachers in and out of the classroom and recruitment and building a referral base for the participants.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide administrative and clerical support to Center staff.
  • Operate all office machines.
  • Ability to maintain required confidentiality.
  • Answer phones and direct calls to the appropriate staff or department; take clear messages when necessary.
  • Communicate with all staff, participants, and community members in a polite and respectful manner.
  • Compile and enter participant demographics, program and attendance data into internal databases / spreadsheets, and funder database.
  • Greet students, staff and visitors; inform students of daily programming.
  • Actively participate in all training sessions and designated meetings.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED/HSE or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year experience in working in adult education preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of administrative experience.
  • The ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Drive (sheets, forms, etc.) and internet database systems.
  • Must be well organized and able to handle shifting priorities.
  • Bilingual skills a plus.
Schedule may include Saturdays and evenings as required. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 17 hours per week.  Compensation:  $12/hr.

Under the supervision of the Director of Education Programs at NYC College of Technology, the counselor will provide support to ESOL and HSE students enrolled in evening and Saturday Adult Learning Center programs.  
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Provide personal counseling, make appropriate referrals, maintain written and electronic records
  • Monitor attendance and proactively meet with students to limit absences    
  • Provide academic advisement as students progress through program and plan for further education and training
  • Work closely with instructors in support of students   
  • Plan and coordinate student workshops
  • Assist with registration, testing and orientation of new students
  • Must be able to work evening and Saturday hours
 
Qualifications:
  • BA in counseling or related field; MA preferred
  • At least two years counseling experience, preferably in grant-funded literacy programs
  • Able to work with a database for basic data entry and information retrieval
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and oral communication skills
  • Well organized and discreet in dealing with student issues
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, be resourceful, and work as part of a team

  • Must be able to start immediately
