Position: Education Specialist (Computer/Digital Literacy)
Department: Adult Education
Reports to: Director of Adult Education
Hours: Part-Time
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Compensation: $33/hr

Summary: Union settlement Adult Education is seeking an Education Specialist (Computer/Digital Literacy) to provide in person support that reports to the Adult Education Director. The Education Specialist has the overall responsibility for the development and implementation of the academic curriculum, program compliance and quality assurance. The agency has embraced the concept of a fully integrated system of care for all consumers of service. This requires that all Agency staff assess the client’s needs holistically and see it as their responsibility to connect the client with services need – internal or external to the agency, regardless of the door through which the consumer enters the system. The ideal candidate will be a hard-working professional able to undertake a variety of teaching approaches. This person will be comfortable working with a high degree of attention to detail and discretion as well as incorporating new and effective ways to

Responsibilities: 
  • Must well organized. 
  • Provide an engaging, interactive lessons that will teach life skills students the abilities that they need to succeed in society. Lessons such as basic money management, written and verbal communication skills, and filling out job applications are essential. 
  • Develop and / or utilize lesson plans that reflect an understanding of how best to teach reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, and technology skills in thematically organized and developmentally / culturally appropriate ways. 
  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of an audience. 
  • Must present material to students each day in an engaging and easy to understand manner. 
  • Complete monthly student assessments.
  • Teach computer literacy, in a manner which builds student skill level and confidence. Manage attendance regularly, including documenting classroom and submitting attendance for each class. 
  • Pre and post-test students using assessment tools. 
  • Ability to build an effective classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate for adult learners 
  • Must implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, including group or individualized instructions 
  • Must offer basic computer and mobile device skills, including website, internet, email, social media, privacy and internet safety 
  • Must provide basic to advance software skills, including Microsoft Office, Word and Excel 
  • Must assess student personality, interests and skills in order to identify career opportunities 
  • Ability to instruct in a manner that develops confidence and encourages creativity 
  • Ability to engage students who may have had no prior, or limited, access to technology 
  • Must exhibit excellent assessment, documentation, organizational, and communication skills 
  • Meet with Program Manager/Director providing updates on student and classroom progress
  • Maintain and ensure HIPAA confidentiality of records (daily)

Qualifications: Describe the skills, knowledge and abilities required. Include minimum educational and experience requirements and preferences. 
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education preferred. 
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching computer/digital literacy/skills.
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching English to immigrant community 
  • Ability and interest in working with diverse populations. 
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to adult literacy, preparing lesson plans, Microsoft Office, including Excel, and working knowledge of Microsoft Suite. 
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, patient and able to work well with others. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 30 pounds.

Computer Class Instructor (Consultant/Sub-Contractor)
Summary:
FHC Services for Older Adults Department is seeking Computer Class Instructors for our Older Adult Centers in Sunset Park and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The department seeks to ensure that older adults who attend FHC programming in South Brooklyn remain connected to community and familial resources that support health and safety, foster resiliency and facilitate engagement with community life.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach 1 to 2 computer classes per week, for a commitment period of at least 15 weeks or longer. Classes are one hour long. Scheduling will depend upon the needs of the Older Adult Center and availability of the Instructor.
  • Independently research, design, and implement lessons tailored to participant needs.
  • Provide training on basic computer skills such as internet usage, email, and web-based calendars.
  • Build participant ability to use digital tools confidently and safely (education re. cybersecurity and avoiding scams).
  • Assist participants in engaging with virtual programs/services offered on video conferencing platforms such as Zoom.
  • Communicate in a timely way with Older Adult Center staff regarding scheduling of classes, documentation of class participation and content, and billing/invoicing.
  • Complete vendor onboarding to become a with NYU Langone financial payment system, and follow all NYU Langone fiscal practices in order to receive payment for services.
Qualifications:
  • At least one year of experience teaching computer classes to adults strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual fluency in English/Spanish, English/Russian, or English/Cantonese strongly preferred.
  • Interest in working with an older adult population.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Positive attitude, patience, and a sense of humor.

Teaching
  • Teaches one 5-week, in-person Computer Skills Class
  • Teaches the science, social studies, reading, and writing sections of the 7-week HSE Prep Class; provides back-up and support for HSE Math Instructor
  • Conducts individual tutoring sessions as needed for low literacy, vocational training, pre-ABE, HSE -- tailors content for each individual lesson for each trainee for each session

Administrative and Departmental Responsibilities
  • Serves as HSE Test Coordinator/Liaison to schedule students for testing dates
  • Provides career, vocational, and educational counseling by determining trainees’ educational and professional qualifications and transferable skills by completing Education and Training intakes with trainees
  • Acts as Education & Training Department resource for clients and staff members alike Facilitates monthly Education and Training orientations as needed
  • Attends departmental and facility meetings
  • Performs other duties related to the goals of the Education and Training Team as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Program Overview:
Microsoft Certified Computer Education classes are a part of COJO Flatbush’s Adult Education division whose objective is to assist individuals to become gainfully employed. The computer instructor will lead classes, instruct students in Microsoft Office product related subjects, develop curriculum and materials, design lessons, maintain an engaging and successful learning environment, collaborate with program staff and maintain program data. The computer instructor will guide and mentor students towards the goal of obtaining MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certification.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain classrooms conducive to learning and facilitate successful participant engagement.
  • Establish clear expectations and encourage student accountability. Implement quality instructional practices, and vary methods of instruction, to encourage participation and retention
  • Teach classes and conduct whole group, small group and individualized instruction.
  • Teach Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook) to students.
  • Conduct regular assessment/post-tests to determine advancement and readiness for certification testing.
  • Guide and mentor students towards the goal of obtaining MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certification.
  • Arrange and schedule with an appropriate Microsoft certified testing site for student MOS certification testing.
  • Maintain timely and complete documentation as required.
  • Participate in mandated program and agency meetings.

Qualifications:
  • Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) credentials required. Proof of active MCT membership required.
  • At least one (1) year MOS directed teaching experience required.
  • Bachelor’s /Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Preference will be given for licensed computer teachers and/or qualified candidates with substantial (2+ years) programming experience in at least one major computer language (C++, Java, Python) in addition to the above requirements.
  • Ability to teach all the MS Office component subject areas (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to incorporating innovative teaching methods.
  • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and capitalize on student strengths.
  • Strong computer skills, including multi-year experience with all components of the Microsoft Office Suite.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizen Council (RBSCC) NYSSHP serves families that have previous shelter history, families that are or were previously at risk of entering the NYC shelter system, and families that have barriers to employment and long term housing stability. 35% of the families served include an individual with a mental or physical disability. NYSSHP provides the necessary supportive services to maintain permanent, stable housing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and teach various computer courses for adults with a focus on job readiness and workplace skill development.
  • Create course outlines and write instruction and review handouts for each of the different courses.
  • Teach Microsoft Office, internet usage, email and other social networking.
  • Educate all residents about the computer classes and conduct outreach.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Associates Degree plus two (2) to three (3) years’ experience working with PCs in Windows environment, to include word processing, desk top, spreadsheets and Internet

P/T Computer Instructor- Bushwick Site

OBT is seeking a part-time Intermediate computer skills instructor for adult learners 5:30-8:30 Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, at OBT's Bushwick location in Brooklyn. 
Computer instructor should be committed to social justice and have experience working with immigrant populations. Also- preferred bi-lingual in English and Spanish .  Instructor will provide daily instruction in the Microsoft Office Suite and Windows Operating Systems environment and teach basic computer applications and keyboarding. Curriculum training is geared toward passing the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification.  Additionally, instructor will do class planning, materials creation and attend staff meetings and professional development. Candidate must be creative, organized, and committed to learner-centered, participatory education.
Required: BA and experience teaching to adults or at-risk youth.  


Class Schedule:  5:30pm-8:30pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at 25 Thornton St. Brooklyn, NY 11206. Upcoming class cycle will begin January 13th and end on April 2nd. 


Salary Information: Starting compensation is based on qualifications and experience.
