P/T ESOL Instructor
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the New York Public Library.  They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELL has taken on the charge to expand ESOL programming in the Library through both in-person and online instruction.

Key Responsibilities:
Working with the Associate Director and the Hub Manager, hourly instructors will:
  • Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency for students assessed at NRS levels 1-6
  • Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language  teaching environment during class-time.
  • Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals.
  • Assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records
  • Maintain daily attendance records
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans for each session based on the curriculum.

Skills Knowledge & Expertise
  • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL
  • Experience teaching adults both in-person and online
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a multicultural setting, involving a variety of team situations
  • Experience administering standardized assessments
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning, instructional software, video, audio and distance learning
  • Successfully demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Zoom

Part-Time Case Manager Positions (Bilingual Spanish Preferred)
Adult Basic Skills (ABS) Program at LaGuardia Community College
LaGuardia Community College is seeking two part-time case managers for its ABS High School Equivalency preparation program for 19 hours per week. This involves some day and evening hours and an occasional Saturday.
​
Case Manager must be comfortable with addressing barriers that will prevent students from pursuing their goal. Case Manager must work closely with teachers and administrative staff to provide the necessary support for the students in our program. learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach.
We are seeking a qualified case manager who has experience working with adult students. BA/BS degree required in social work or related field, plus a minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with adults as a case manager. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Primary Responsibilities include:
  • Providing high quality support services to students we serve in the program
  • Interviewing prospective students to discuss possible barriers
  • Identifying and addressing issues as childcare, housing, family illness, work schedule, time management, finance, and other obstacles preventing students to complete their course
  • Communicating with students regarding absenteeism
  • Motivating students to persist and succeed in the program
  • Developing and presenting workshops on how to study, test anxiety, time management, financial literacy, etc.
  • Assisting students to complete GED applications
  • Conferencing students individually on their goals and next steps
  • Collaborating with the Career Development Center to assist students in applying to college
  • Referrals to appropriate training programs, employment opportunities and/or community agencies
  • Participating in professional development and staff meetings
  • Other related tasks, as necessary
  • Part-time positions 19 hours per week (flexible hours) through June 2023 (with the possibility of extending past June 2023)

With a membership of 24,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more."

Current Opening:
MRNY would like to hire a temporary ESOL instructor for one cycle of an ESOL/Food Protection class that will run M-Th 6:15-9:15 from 3/27 until 5/29. Monday classes will be in person at a space near our Queens office, T-W-Th classes will be held on Zoom.   All candidates must be fully vaccinated for Covid.  The position will be for 17 hrs. a week: 10 instructional hours, 5 prep hours, 1 hr. a week to communicate with students outside of class, and 1 hr. a week for meetings with supervisors/other teachers.  
The teacher will also be paid for occasional additional meeting or training time and are expected to help with attendance tracking for the class. (Training on any of the related admin tasks will be provided as well regular support on curricular and student related issues/questions.)

Please note, MRNY staff are currently working both remotely and in-person.   The position will require a mix of remote instructional work and in person instructional work at a space near our office. 

 Key Responsibilities but not limited to:
  • Curricular design work- MRNY has extensive curricular materials that can be used to teach this ESOL/Food Protection content but the instructor will need to review and tailor the materials to the enrolled students as needed. 
  • Student Assessment- the instructor will be asked to support students in taking some pre certification quizzes in class and supporting them in coordination with our admin staff, to attend and pass their Food Protection certification exam. 
  • Instruction- Deliver content material in ways that take into account students’ levels and learning styles, the need to pace and scaffold information, and the need to balance the 4 skills + vocabulary development and grammar skill development
  • Communication with and support of students - Call absent students every day and document calls; make referrals to MRNY’s case manager as needed
  • Related admin/grant related tasks- in addition to tracking attendance, help with post testing, grading of samples of students’ work, and writing monthly progress notes for a portion of students in the class, as funders require 
  • Participate in meetings and trainings- attend external professional development according to funders’ requirements, & 1:1 support, team and staff meetings
Requirements:
  • Eligible to work in the US 
  • Full vaccination with an FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior to first day of employment
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Teaching Certification or Masters in TESOL
  • Strong communication skills
  • Enough Spanish to communicate with students outside of class if not occasionally within class

Current Opening: 
MRNY is seeking an ESOL instructor for a class with a Sunday in-person 9:30am-3:30pm schedule for our April-June cycle.  The instructor will also support students’ use of a cell based program called Cell Ed for 1.5-2 hrs. week outside of class time. The instructor will also support students’ use of a cell-based program called Cell Ed for 1.5-2 hrs wk outside of class time.  The job is for 11 hrs wk:  6 instructional hours, 3 prep hours, an hour for meetings and an hour for contact with students outside of class.

All candidates must be fully vaccinated for Covid. Classes will run until the end of June 2023. Summer work time and fall class hours will be available after that if/as the teacher is interested assuming funding permits.  

*In addition to class time, teachers are paid a .5 hrs./prep for every teaching hour, 1 hr. a week to communicate with students outside of class, and 1 hr. a week for meetings with supervisors/other teachers.

Teachers are also paid for occasional required professional development and meeting time and are expected to help with attendance, as well as post testing and re-enrollment at the end of the cycle. Adult English Language and Literacy Intake Advisor -Washington Heights Library

​Overview
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the Library.  Professional teachers facilitate free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking, and listening from a 0 to 8th-grade level in both in-person and online classes. Instruction is offered in 3, 10-week cycles and 1, 4-week summer cycle. The Intake Advisors recruit new students, determine eligibility through testing and interview, and  monitor attendance, and student retention.  Intake Advisors follow up with students to identify barriers to participation and encourage continuation in the program. 

We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:
  • Case management and regular communication with students 
  • Outreach and relationship building with internal and external partners for program referrals
Teach:
  • Introduce students to various Library and city services in helping students achieve their long term goals, and remove barriers to program participation
  • Conference with students on job readiness topics 
  • Orient new students to basic digital literacy and online learning platforms
Learn:
  • Stay abreast of Library strategic priorities and initiatives 
  • Maintain regular attendance at city and state professional development workshops 
Improve:
  • Student retention and persistence in program participation resulting in higher measurable skill gain
  • Student registration and intake processes ensuring a positive patron experience
Some expectations for this role are that within:
 
1 month, this person will:
  • Recruit, assess, and place students
  • Regularly communicate with absent students to identify and eliminate barriers to program participation 
3 months, this person will:
  • Receive or maintain certification in Best Plus and TABE administration 
  • Enter data into program and Library databases (ASISTS and Google Drive) 
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Coordinate localized information sessions
  • Coordinate with both external and internal partners to provide workshops to a diverse population
  • Analyze data and run reports that will influence future programming choices
Responsibilities: 
  • Provide case management services to students including running information sessions, organizing the intake appointment process including assessment (Best Plus and TABE), NRS goal setting, and placement in a class, or referral to an outside agency; monitor student progress, daily follow up with students who have an attendance problem to encourage continuation in the program 
  • Input data for students into the agency database in a timely manner, which includes client personal contact information, assessment results, attendance, and educational and employment outcomes.
  • Test all students at the end of each cycle
  • Maintain paper record files for each student as per NYSED requirements
  • Conduct outreach
  • Connect adult students with needed and available community resources. Follow-up with clients and agencies as appropriate to document use/success of referral.
  • Provide workshops on using technology, orientations to library services, etc.

QUEENS PUBLIC LIBRARY
PART-TIME JOB DESCRIPTION

Queens Public Library - Jackson Heights branch is seeking a Part Time ESOL Instructor. 

The Queens Public Library at the Jackson Heights Adult Learning Center is a resource center for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and ABE literacy students up to the HSE level.  The Center provides free classes with teachers for guided learning.  In addition to an extensive collection of books, multimedia audio/visual materials for use in or out of the Center, we also offer basic computer literacy training and small conversation and tutoring groups led by trained volunteers to help improve our students’ English proficiency skills.

Current Opening:  Queens Public Library at the Jackson Heights Adult Learning Center would like to hire a Part time ESOL instructor for our in-person classes and/or online classes.  

The hired candidate will also be paid for lesson planning, occasional required professional development, and staff meetings. Teachers are expected to help with attendance, as well as registration, post testing and re-enrollment at the end of each cycle. (Training on any of the related admin tasks will be provided as well regular support on curricular and student related issues/questions.)

High Beginner Tuesday/Thursday 10-1

Teachers’ responsibilities
  • Lesson Planning : develop unit and lesson plans related materials. Maintain all of that in the Google Classroom and Google drive.
  • Student Assessment- conduct BEST Plus initial assessments. Pre-test at the beginning of the cycle and at the end of the cycle (Post-test). If not certified, be willing to attend Best Plus initial training. 
  • Instruction- Deliver content material in ways that consider students’ levels and learning styles, use different learning strategies and methods of instruction, balance all four objectives/skills + vocabulary development and grammar skill development. 
  • Technology - have knowledge in using a variety of platforms for virtual programs, and digital versions of materials for class instruction, as well as provide technical support to students
  • Communication with and support of students - Attend to students' needs and make referrals to case managers as needed. Collect a variety of resources to inform or refer students to programs provided by QPL or outside sources. 
  • Related admin tasks- support the center with student registration, student retention, and contacting students regarding absences, transfers. Other admin needs as needed.
  • Professional Development- attend teacher training and staff development webinars provided by QPL as well as external professional development according to funders’ requirements.

Strongly Preferred:  
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language to adult learners
  • Experience teaching classes remotely
  • Available to teach one morning and one evening class
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
Requirements:
  • Eligible to work in the US
