ACE Grants Manager and Writer at LaGuardia Community College

General Description
Reporting to the Vice President for Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) and working closely with the Director of Grants Development, the Grant Manager and Writer is responsible for strategically pursuing funding opportunities that align with LaGuardia Community College’s mission and strategic goals. This position will primarily support grant-seeking activities within the division of Adult and Continuing Education, but may occasionally support other activities across the college.
Duties include:
  • Proactively monitoring federal, state, and city agencies for funding opportunities appropriate for the division of ACE and college workforce development initiatives;
  • Working with senior leadership and program directors to identify funding opportunities for priority projects;
  • Assisting with writing and editing grant proposals and identifying budget needs;
  • Preparing and/or reviewing proposal budgets to ensure compliance with CUNY, Research Foundation, LaGuardia and funder requirements;
  • Submitting grant proposals to funders on behalf of ACE and the college using a variety of online submission portals;
  • Providing training to divisional staff on sourcing funding opportunities, grant writing and proposal submission processes;
  • Managing the submission of interim and final reports to sponsors, as needed;
  • Gathering, analyzing and presenting data related to ACE programs and grant funding;
  • Maintain records and submit reports related to grant opportunities.
  • Developing a thorough understanding of ACE’s mission and strategic goals and translating that knowledge into compelling and competitive grant proposals;
  • Maintain positive relationships with funders and other stakeholders;
  • Ensuring that proposals submitted are in compliance with rules and regulations related to higher education grants, and meet the terms and conditions of the specific RFP;
  • Occasionally work with faculty and staff from other divisions to prepare and submit grant proposals;

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required. The ideal candidate is an experienced grant writer who is familiar with the national, state and local grant funding landscape in the fields of workforce development, job training, pre-college/bridge programming, adult/continuing education, and/or higher education.

Other Qualifications:
Working knowledge of allowable and unallowable costs for higher education grants. Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Highly motivated.  Creative thinking skills. Ability to collaborate and interact well with a variety of people and personalities. Knowledgeable about all aspects of creating and editing proposals and budget as well as funding regulations and cost principals for sponsored project.  Extremely well organized and detail oriented.  Ability to use independent judgment. Works well under pressure.

Experience writing and obtaining funding from workforce development grants is preferred.

Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the VP, Development, the Grant Writer is responsible for analyzing Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and producing high quality grant proposals within a specified timeframe that result in government and private foundation grant awards for The Fortune Society.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Research government and private foundation funding opportunities and identify those that are potentially a good fit for supporting Fortune’s programs;
  • Analyze RFPs, prepare written RFP analyses for senior staff, and lead meetings with senior staff to discuss RFPs that are up for consideration;
  • Lead the preparation and development of government and private foundation grant proposals, including all external and internal outreach and planning required and the drafting of the narrative, budget, and all attachments; ensure that all internal and final deadlines are met and proposal components are being addressed by relevant staff, including development and program staff;
  • Initiate communication with essential Fortune staff, including program managers, finance staff, and external partners needed for the preparation of high quality grant proposals;
  • Participate in regular meetings with Fortune staff to discuss grant projects;
  • Coordinate the submission of grant reports, as needed;
  • Attend outside trainings related to fundraising and grant development, reentry programs and policies; and attend all internal meetings related to maximizing fundraising opportunities for Fortune;
  • Act as a liaison between government and private funders; advise program and senior executive staff on communications with appropriate contacts and funder agencies;
  • Write and prepare fundraising materials for government officials, including concept papers, information packets, and brochures;
  • Participate in the ongoing development of creative projects that generate future funding opportunities for Fortune, including projects in partnership with external organizations involved in policy advocacy and research, arts and culture, housing, education, etc.;
  • Assist in the development of Fortune’s annual fundraising goals and action plan to achieve them;
  • Develop a high level of expertise in reentry programs and agencies that fund them, including housing, substance abuse treatment, mental health, employment services, education, HIV/AIDS, court advocacy, and alternatives to incarceration (ATI);
  • Contribute to the overall positive growth and development of the Development, Communications and Policy unit and to The Fortune Society as a whole; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Advanced degree (MPA, MSW or JD) preferred;
  • 2-4 years’ experience in producing grant proposals, with a significant percentage of grant proposals drafted and submitted resulting in grant awards, OR comparable advocacy writing experience in a professional setting (e.g., law, journalism, etc.);
  • Exceptionally detail-oriented written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent research, analysis, synthesis, and presentation skills;
  • Exceptional project management skills, including relationship building and time management;
  • Ability to work effectively and flexibly to produce high quality work products in an extremely fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
  • Ability to receive and integrate constructive critiques and feedback into work;
  • Familiarity with reentry programs and a basic understanding of the criminal justice system and its impact on individuals with criminal histories in New York City a plus;
  • Commitment to the mission of the agency, helping those involved in the criminal justice system to break the cycle of crime and incarceration; and

Travel Requirements – May require travel to our Harlem office for meetings or trainings.
