ESOL Instructor (part time): (Staten Island vacancies)
The main responsibilities for the instructor are to work with Adult Learning Center Assistant Director   and the Hub Manager to implement the goals and activities of the adult education program.  To teach and assist adult ESOL students in improving their English skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing).  To instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals. To assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records.:
  • Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL.  NYS TESOL certification preferred.
  • Experience teaching and/or working with adults.
  • Instruct assigned English classes for 2 hour sessions, twice a week in 10 week cycles
  • Prepare a syllabus and daily lesson plans for each session/class based on student needs/interests, and the prescribed curriculum.
  • Administer standardized assessments
  • Assist with the intake registration and placement of new students
  • Maintain daily attendance records
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning instructional software, video, audio and distance learning preferred.

Salary: $18.45 /hr                                                                           
                                                                                                                                                                     
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Pre-Test and Post-Test students using BEST Plus and TABE                                                   
  • Places students according to English Proficiency Level             
  • Assists students in filling out enrollment forms                                                          
  • Enters information in ASISTS and CAPRICORN data bases on a regular basis
  • Enters and updates student attendance and information on Google Docs                
  • Creates folders for all enrolled students and verifies that the folders contain all required forms and verifies that the information is written correctly on the forms
  • Ensures that each student who has achieved the benchmark hours have a portfolio                                           
  • Checks data bases for accuracy and consistency on a bi-weekly basis       
  • Attends BEST Plus and TABE refresher workshops or re-certification workshops
  • Provides information about the program to potential students and organizations
  • Assists with registration and outreach for the program
  • Contacts students who stop coming for more than two sessions                         
  • Provides teachers with programmatic support like: placing students in different levels or schedules upon conferencing with the teacher.  Provides teachers/instructors with teaching materials like markers, erasers, pencils, calculators, etc.
  • Other duties as required by the program                                                                                            
Qualifications:                                                                                                                                  
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be BEST Plus 2.0, ASISTS, and TABE certified and have at least 2 years experience with ASISTS and CAPRICORN Data Bases and Best Plus 2.0 and TABE testing.
  • Candidates must be flexible and willing to learn programs procedures quickly. Candidates must be able to work independently, have good communication skills, and must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).                                                                  
Education and/or Experience required: 
High School Diploma Required, Associates Degree preferred and at least two  years of experience working with ASISTS and Capricorn and administering BEST PLUS and TABE tests.

AGENCY BACKGROUND:

Integration is the cornerstone of NMIC’s programs, and our staff can identify and address a broad array of immediate needs through comprehensive crisis intervention services. With their crises resolved, clients move seamlessly to capacity building services through our holistic programs designed to transition individuals and families to self-sufficiency. 
  • Our Legal Services, Social Services, and Weatherization programs meet community members’ basic needs including housing, income, nutrition and health.
  • Our Community Organizing program empowers groups of residents to collectively secure longer term and larger scale improvements to their own basic needs.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Instructor is responsible for teaching English to students in NMIC’s adult education program in a way that is dynamic and contextualized for students’ practical use. In addition, the instructor will develop and submit regular lesson logs, write student case notes, provide insight on the existing curriculum and meet professional development requirements. This is a part time role with availability in the mornings (Monday-Friday, 9-1) or evenings (Tuesday-Thursday, 5:40-9).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans and educational activities for students in ESOL programming.
  • Administer assessment tests and track results.
  • Monitor students’ educational progress and liaise with staff members provide feedback and establish educational plans.
  • Complete and submit weekly lesson logs and bimonthly student case notes.
  • Maintain attendance records, ensure accuracy of completion and submit them to program staff.
  • Attend professional development sessions according to city and state standards.
  • Attend and participate in regular program meetings.
  • Initiate and participate in case conferencing as needed.
  • Work with Academic Coordinator to integrate technology into class work.

Additional related responsibilities may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BA/BS in relevant subject required; MA in education or TESOL preferred
  • Minimum two years of ESOL instructional experience, preferably with adults
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus

Position: Director of Adult Education

Program Summary:
The Adult Education program offers ABE and HSE classes (English and Spanish), ESOL levels 1-6 classes with a general and a contextualized curriculum aiming at training opportunities in Health Careers and customer service skills.  The program partners with other organizations to offer basic literacy in Spanish and in English, training and job opportunities as well as cultural programming. It services approximately 530 adults per year by offering instruction weekdays, weeknights and Saturdays.  
Position Summary:
The Director of Adult Education is responsible for managing all the education programming Union Settlement offers adults, including, but not limited to HSE (English and Spanish) and ESOL.   Responsibilities include curriculum development, course evaluation and scheduling, budget preparation, fiscal management, supervision and staff development, record keeping, and reporting to funding agencies. The Director is a member of the agency’s senior management team and serves as a strategic partner in planning and implementing the future vision for the agency.  The Director must be both a hands-on worker and an excellent manager. 
 
Responsibilities:
  • Direct and administer a program that meets the educational needs of adult participants.
  • Supervise teachers and support staff.
  • Develop, schedule, and supervise classes, projects and programs
  • Direct all outreach to target populations and liaison with appropriate community and government agencies regarding adult education services provided by Union Settlement.
  • Direct and initiate efforts to expand adult education programs for emerging populations.
  • Review and evaluate delivery of services on an on-going basis. Direct all changes to improve service delivery and ensure program goals are being met.  
  • Ensure student records and files are maintained.
  • Ensure all funding agency reports are submitted on time.
  • Ensure all funding agency policies and procedures, as well as Union Settlement policies and procedures, are enforced and followed.
  • Collaborate with Finance Department to create program budgets and fiscal controls. Adhere to all funding agency guidelines when expending funds. 
  • Collaborate with Development Department regarding grant proposals and fundraising opportunities. 
  • Define, measure, and evaluate program performance data.
  • Create continuous improvement based on performance data.
  • Train, supervise and motivate others to engage in appropriate performance management activities.
  • Evaluate staff performance and identify areas of training needed. Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies to facilitate training.
  •  Additional duties as assigned by the Executive Director and Associate Executive Director. 
 
Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field preferred. 
  • Strong bilingual (English/Spanish) fluency required.  Oral communication skills in other languages such as French, desired. 
  • Significant experience managing adult education and/or training programs, with at least 5 years’ supervisory experience.
  • At least two (2) years of experience teaching adults of diverse backgrounds. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced, challenging, and constantly changing environment.
  • Knowledge of East Harlem community preferred. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing adult education populations.
  • An innovative and patient professional dedicated to serving adult education populations. 
  • Unquestioned personal and professional integrity
  • A strong desire to help improve the lives of the residents of the local East Harlem community
