Program Overview: Our HSE Prep classes are a part of Henry Street Settlement’s Education and Employment Services, a $10M division providing a continuum of services from early childhood education through adult workforce programs designed to assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary for lifetime self-sufficiency. HSE Prep classes will offer opportunities for young adult learners to work towards earning their High School Equivalency and becoming gainfully employed. The HSE Instructor will lead classes at two sites (Lower East Side and the Bronx), instruct students in all subjects (reading, math, science, social studies, writing) included on the TASC, develop curriculum and materials, design lessons, maintain a successful learning environment, collaborate with program staff and maintain program data/complete data entry as required by program and funding sources. 

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education (MEd) preferred
  • One (1) year teaching experience required
  • Ability to engage a diverse population including disconnected youth and adult learners
  • Knowledge of Pre-HSE and HSE curriculum and TASC testing requirements and comfortable teaching all 5 subject areas (reading, math, science, social studies, writing)
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and web-hosted databases
  • Commitment to incorporating innovative teaching methods
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (including a great sense of humor)
  • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and capitalize on student strengths
  • Understanding of workforce development landscape and how to incorporate into curriculum a plus
Responsibilities:
  • Maintain classrooms conducive to learning and facilitate successful participant engagement, quality interaction and learning
  • Establish clear expectations and encouraging student accountability
  • Implement quality instructional practices, and vary methods of instruction, to encourage participation and retention
  • Be able to teach large classes and conduct small group tutoring sessions
  • Conduct regular assessment/post-tests to determine advancement
  • Maintain timely and complete documentation, including individual case notes as prescribed by Program Director

Pre-HSE Instructor F/T

Friends of Island Academy (Friends) was founded in 1990 to anchor, support and develop capacity among young people newly released from jail in New York City.  A pioneer in adolescent reentry services, Friends builds on connections developed with young people while in custody, and leverages those relationships to provide post-release, neighborhood-based supportive services.  Friends is seeking an instructor to teach a pre-HSE class, lead assessment activities and its education initiatives, and support the larger goals of the newly-funded Youth Reentry Network. 
 
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Teach HSE class for 17-24 year olds who have had criminal justice involvement
  • Provide instruction in Social Studies, Science, English Language Arts, Math, and Writing. 
  • Support students’ development as readers and writers; teach reading strategies and provide regular, meaningful writing activities
  • Develop learner-centered, participatory lessons, using relevant materials and a project-based approach. 
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans in both math and/or literacy, including group instruction and one-on-one tutoring.
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and in-class assessment.
  • Maintain attendance and assessment data in Friends’ agency-wide database; enter regular notes on student progress.
Lead assessment activities for Friends Jail-to-School Pipeline program
  • Conduct assessments for prospective students – including TABE tests, and informal reading inventories when appropriate;
  • Using TABE scores, informal assessments, school transcripts, and educational history, help prospective students consider their educational options (i.e., regular diploma track, HSE track, etc.)
Support other Pipeline initiatives
  • Help plan and participate in student orientations;
  • Make referrals to other programs as appropriate;
  • Meet with parents, Probation Officers, and other referring agencies
  • Participate with the rest of the Education team in program planning and evaluation
Qualifications Required
  • Three-five years’ experience teaching in adult literacy/HSE education;
  • Experience working with at-risk youth or justice involved youth;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and an understanding and belief in strengths-based youth development philosophy are needed to succeed in this position.
  • A sense of humor, integrity, flexibility and a profound commitment to the youth we serve;

Through the Y Roads Center’s programs and services, the YMCA of Greater New York commits to working with young people, ages 17 to 24, who identify as having a particularly difficult time making the successful transition to adulthood, commonly referred to as opportunity youth. The YMCA of Greater New York seeks a dynamic professional to become the Counseling Specialist, to work in a unique young adult literacy service center in Brooklyn, NY.  The Counseling Specialist functions as a core member of a collaborative team that provides wrap around services and support to Y Roads Center participants.  The Specialist will work one-on-one with participants, as well as plan, lead and run groups.  In addition, the Incumbent may assist in designing and leading trainings and workshops related to program goals. 

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct intake & assessments of potential participants.
  • Develop individual service plans to ensure success and implementation of the counseling treatment plan, which may include skill development, strategies for addressing personal issues or overcoming obstacles.
  • Act as client’s advocate in order to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations; refer clients to community resources or to specialists as necessary (e.g., social services, mental health specialty care, substance abuse treatment), as well as maintain required records and treatment plans.
  • Meet with families, probation officers, police, and other interested parties in order to exchange necessary information during the treatment process.
  • Assist in the recruitment plan; organize and lead structured programs on life skills, workforce development, study skills, recreation and social activities for clients.
  • Actively participate in training sessions and designated meetings.

Qualifications:
  • BSW, MSW or related credential preferred, but not required.
  • Two years of experience in individual counseling, leading groups and / or educational workshops.
  • Experience working with students, families and/or community, especially those who are low income and/or engaged with government systems (probations, juvenile justice, education, HRA or foster care).
  • Familiarity with brief, structured counseling techniques (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused, CBT) with various populations; juvenile justice, probation, foster care.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Immigration Education Counselor
**This is a temporary grant-funded position through July 31, 2017**

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Immigration Education Counselor, supporting the ActionNYC DACA Education Initiative, provides case management to potentially DACA-eligible customers enrolled in contextualized ESOL classes by connecting them to social services to assist in removing barriers to participation and retention. The Immigration Education Counselor provides assistance in keeping customers on track to file for DACA and builds and maintains a rich referral system to further workforce and educational programs including training, career development, ABE/HSE and post-secondary education. The Immigration Education Counselor will interact with internal stakeholders and established partner organizations to follow the ActionNYC DACA Education Initiative Service Delivery Model and move customers towards DACA attainment.
  • Identifies, predicts and mitigates barriers to educational, workforce and economic goals and enables customers to participate in educational and employment opportunities.
  • Performs needs assessments and sets educational and employment goals with all customers at the beginning, middle and end of each session
  • Follows up with all customers on a regular basis to update needs assessments and assess progress on goals set.
  • Determines social service needs, screens for benefits, assists with applications and makes referrals as necessary.
  • Provides individualized case management services and support to customers including regularly meeting with customers individually to provide short-term interventions, advisement and appropriate referrals and assisting individuals with navigating complex systems including healthcare, social services, education and financial systems.
  • Conducts appropriate social and educational workshops to provide general and situational-specific information to customers.
  • Works with external organizations to provide workshops on topics not within case manager’s/counselor’s areas of expertise.
  • Documents and tracks all interactions with customers through case notes and other tools according to timeline set by supervisor and/or funding specifications.
  • Follows up with customers on a regular basis to assess progress on goals and record customer outcomes in appropriate systems.
  • Maintains program statistical data as required by funding requirements and program standards.
  • Manages the collection and distribution of program outcomes statistical data for reporting purposes, including adherence to program standards and government contract reporting.
  • Develops and maintains strong community based partnerships with organizations that can serve as referral partners to meet the needs of students by attending community meetings, special events, and other social collaborative opportunities to develop and maintain those partnerships.
  • Makes referrals to partner organizations based on the needs of customers, documents referrals in case notes and follows up with customers and organizations to make sure customers’ needs are being met and that outcomes are being achieved.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services or a related field required. Master’s Degree preferred. 
  • At least one year of case management experience is required. Experience working with adults and families or social service agencies preferred. 
  • Experience in MS Office Suite software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). 
  • Excellent presentation skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills; Good networking and team building skills. Detail oriented, flexible and a self-starter. 
  • Basic knowledge and experience serving a diverse population. 
  • Good organization and administrative skills including experience with tracking program attendance and preparing reports.

The AELP provides classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation for adults ages 19 and above.  The AELP incorporates job readiness, college preparation and job placement into its curriculum.  The goal of the program is to help adults improve their English language proficiency, enhance literacy skills, gain citizenship, obtain HSEs, and obtain or improve employment.

Duties will include managing the AELP program across several sites in Brooklyn; helping to implement standardized ESOL, ABE, CIVICS and TASC curricula for the use of all instructors; ensuring that instructors deliver contextualized, student-driven curriculum that integrates work readiness skills, technology, family, health, and financial  literacy; overseeing recruitment, registration, authentic assessment and orientation for new students; assisting with reporting to government and private funders; tracking and reporting student data and achievement results; supervising some adult literacy staff at all program locations. 
 
Qualifications:  Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree; preferably Master’s in Education, Administration or related field and minimum of two years of experience in Adult Education; must possess excellent oral and written communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel; Salesforce, Capricorn and/or other database experience required; BEST Plus certification along with knowledge of TABE and NRS reporting standards preferred; community outreach and partnership experience a plus; must be able to work flexible hours to include evenings. Position Description
Turning Point is hiring an ABE/HSE teacher to for a class that meets daytime (9:00-1 4 per week for a total of 35 work hours (class + prep time) each week.  This teacher must be comfortable teaching math, reading, and writing skills, as well as addressing specific content that will be on the TASC test.

Teachers are responsible for a class of 20-25 students at the Education Center and must be comfortable with learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach.  While the Education Center has an overall set of class standards, teachers are responsible for creating her/his own curriculum and lesson plans.   Teachers work closely with counselors and administrative staff to provide 360 degree service to students.  Teachers are expected to attend staff meetings and trainings as needed.

Turning Point’s Education Center is a community-based program in Sunset Park (Brooklyn) offering free ABE, HSE, and ESOL classes, as well as support services.  Our qualified staff is committed to creating an holistic learning community where students develop the skills to reach their goals.  Peer support, student-centered learning, and critical thinking are central to the program.  Our basic literacy and HSE programs primarily serve out-of-school youth, and our program embraces youth culture and youth development strategies.  All classes are college-bound and career-bound.

Essential Job Functions
  • The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job:
  • Provide high quality instruction in all HSE subject areas a learner-centered classroom.
  • Develop meaningful curricula and stimulating lesson plans based on student needs.
  • Participate in case conferences and counseling with individual students as needed.
  • Conduct mid-term and end-of-term conferences to assess and share progress with students.
  • Administer placement tests, post-tests, and other necessary assessments.
  • Guide students in setting goals and developing realistic effective plans for achieving them.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and staff development sessions.
  • Maintain roll books and regular attendance of students 
  • Create opportunities for mentoring individual students; partner with counselors, administrators and other staff to develop strategies for providing support to individual students.

ESOL Instructor (Volunteer)

Vietnam Learning, Arts & Cultural Center (VLACC) is looking for a volunteer teacher for English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.  All of our classes are tuition-free and are held in Chinatown/Little Italy (NYC).
If you have 2-3 hours/week to spare and would like to volunteer and contribute to helping immigrants learn English, we need you!
Classes for fall 2016:  week of Sept 20-Dec 13th.
Specifications and Responsibilities:
  • One year teaching ESL to students preferred.
  • TESOL certification preferred, but not required.
  • Dynamic with good voice projection.
  • Prepare for lesson plans.
  • Must commit to teaching at least 12-14 weeks (Sept-Dec 2016 and ideally Feb-June 2017--each weekly class is 2.5-3 hours long)
  • Days needed for ESL:  Tuesday and Thursday afternoons
