Position Title:  Adult Education & Workforce Development Program Coordinator
Date Modified: August, 2017
Reports to: Director of Adult Education & Workforce Development
Hours:  40 hours per week, includes 2 late nights & Saturdays while classes are in session
FLSA Classification:  Non-Exempt
Position Purpose: Provides program coordination and direct services for the Department including overseeing Saturday ESOL classes sand providing administrative services, and direct services to program participants

Essential Functions:
  • Teach adult education classes (ESOL, Civics, HSE, technology, workforce development), both as an assigned instructor and as a substitute, as needed.
  • Responsible for general oversight of Saturday classes on behalf of the Department.
  • Assist Program Manager with coordinating teacher schedules, timesheets and general operations for the smooth running of classes. Assist Program manager with recruiting  paid and volunteer teachers
  • Assist Program Manager in arranging and leading monthly staff development sessions, including sessions on various instruction methods and enriched learning in classroom settings
  • Conduct participant intakes, recruitment, and testing
  • Provide administrative support for the department, including daily database entry in multiple systems, preparation of records and reports; and maintenance of hard copy and electronic filing systems
  • Respond to in-person and telephone inquiries about the department and classes from prospective and current program participants, staff, and the public
  • Assist with resolving issues raised by program participants
  • Interact with funders as needed; assist with site visits
  • Participate in program meetings and trainings
  • Participate in Mercy Center staff meetings and other organization-wide meetings and activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications:
  • BA/BS degree and a minimum of 4 years in ESOL experience
  • Bilingual English/ Spanish or  English/French or English/Arabic
  • Experience in student  intake, recruitment, testing and extensive teaching activities in previous positions
  • Excellent computer skills, with knowledge of Capricorn and ETO databases a plus
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and use self-initiative
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • Works in standard office conditions (at a desk and computer) and in classroom settings
  • Works in more than one work site, with travel between the two required.

Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow is seeking a part-time ESOL instructor for Level 2 adult learners at our 25 Thornton Street location. The schedule is Monday through Thursday 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. to start immediately.

Who we’re looking for:
  • Minimum of 4 years experience teaching ESOL
  • Very proficient English speakers with good working knowledge of English grammar and language use.
  • Experienced teachers with good interpersonal skills who enjoy working in diverse linguistic and cultural settings.
  • Passionate teachers looking to empower immigrant communities through English language education.
  • Applicants with experience teaching English as a Second Language 4 years + (ESL) REQUIRED
 
Responsibilities:
  • Help second language learners improve their English conversation skills through communicative language teaching (CLT) approach.
  • Implement and adapt lesson plans from a standards-based curriculum.
  • Report to the Director of Adult Education and Workforce Development.
 
Classes Offered:
  • Tuesdays - Fridays: 9:00 am - 12 pm
  • Mondays – Thursdays: 6:15 pm – 9:00 pm
  • Saturdays 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
 
Commitment:
  • 4 days per week / 3 hours per day (evening)

Pre-HSE Instructor – Part-Time Evenings (Brooklyn, NY)
Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow is seeking a part-time Pre-HSE Instructor for adult learners for our 280 Wyckoff Avenue location.  The schedule is Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. to start immediately.  Interested candidates should be available to teach for the entire length of each 16-week class cycle.

The Pre-HSE Instructor should be able to provide math and literacy instruction to a varied age-range adult population; must be knowledgeable of the Common Core at Pre-HSE level, and be able to administer and utilize standardized assessments to develop curricula targeting the educational challenges of students.  Instructor will design lesson plans and adjust instructions according to the different learning styles and will maintain collaborative learning environments.  The instructor must monitor students’ performance and attendance for required reporting systems and should also be discreet when handling student’s confidential information.

Requirements: BA required, experience teaching adults, particularly strong background teaching math, reading and writing; knowledgeable of Pre-HSE and HSE curricula and TASC core requirements; excellent computer and organizational skills.
