Department: Queens Public Library / Long Island City Adult Learning Center
Position Title: Part-Time Learning Support Specialist
Hiring Wage: $18 per/hour

SUMMARY
The Learning Support Specialist works as part of a Community Library team to provide direct public service. The Learning Support Specialist is responsible for delivering excellent customer service as well as routine administrative and clerical duties. Supports the Library’s mission, values and overall Strategic Plan.  Provides input to improve the customer experience as well as staff procedures and workflows. Provides assistance to customers in the use of self-service check in/out and multi-functional devices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide stellar customer service (in person & via phone)
  • Provide our teachers with administrative support however necessary
  • Assist with administering pre-/post testing
  • Assist with registration week of each semester by facilitating the completion of student documents and finalizing process of student enrollment
  • Assist with follow-up with students about a variety of topics: absences, lateness, incomplete documents, and reminders, etc.
  • Assist with maintaining internal databases
  • Follow-up with instructional staff about professional development, submitting their monthly reports, lesson plans, and quarterly lesson overviews
  • Input student contact hours, pre-/posttest and student outcomes
  • Assist center manager as needed

This full-time position is predominantly in-person/on-site. 

Teaching
  • Teaches one 5-week, in-person Computer Skills Class
  • Teaches the science, social studies, reading, and writing sections of the 7-week HSE Prep Class; provides back-up and support for HSE Math Instructor
  • Conducts individual tutoring sessions as needed for low literacy, vocational training, pre-ABE, HSE -- tailors content for each individual lesson for each trainee for each session

Administrative and Departmental Responsibilities
  • Serves as HSE Test Coordinator/Liaison to schedule students for testing dates
  • Provides career, vocational, and educational counseling by determining trainees’ educational and professional qualifications and transferable skills by completing Education and Training intakes with trainees
  • Acts as Education & Training Department resource for clients and staff members alike Facilitates monthly Education and Training orientations as needed
  • Attends departmental and facility meetings
  • Performs other duties related to the goals of the Education and Training Team as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

General Description
LaGuardia Community College’s Center for Immigrant Education and Training (CIET) seeks an Educational Case Manager (ECM).  Housed in LaGuardia’s Division of Adult & Continuing Education, CIET provides no-cost educational and training programs designed to assist low-income immigrant English language learners to advance on their educational and career pathways and to achieve their civic and parent engagement goals. 
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
  • Advising and motivating immigrant clients in developing and persisting in their educational and career pathways, both through in-class workshops and one-on-one follow-up sessions.
  • Designing and leading workshops on such topics as goal setting, US-style resume development and interviewing skills, managing test anxiety and stress, navigating systems, and self-care.
  • Coordinating outreach, recruitment, and pre-assessment sessions for new and wait-listed applicants.
  • Tracking student progress, attendance and satisfaction, while completing all data entry tasks as required by funders and the university, and observing established confidentiality measures.
  • Collaborating with ESOL instructors and staff members to monitor and document student and alumnae progress and outcomes, both during courses and after student exit.
  • Identifying and establishing joint referral relationships with relevant community-based organizations, social service agencies, and local immigrant organizations to meet client needs.
  • Providing crisis intervention, support, and referrals to social services for students.
  • Establishing and maintaining an active job-entry referral process with the NYC WorkForce1 system, the ACE Career Development Center, and employer partners for students with employment goals.
  • Participating in funder update and reporting activities, including the writing of monthly and quarterly reports on program and student outcomes using compiled data and student feedback.

ESOL Instructor P/T

LaGuardia Community College’s Center for Immigrant Education and Training (CIET) seeks dynamic and innovative part-time ESOL instructors for its ESOL evening program. Classes are remote.
 
Responsibilities of this position will include:
  • Teaching approximately 9 hours per week in the evening ESOL program 6:00 to 9:00 PM (M/T/W)
  • Creating a communicative online classroom environment for immigrant English language learner adults;
  • Leading students in contextualized ESOL lessons around such themes as college transition, civic engagement, career planning, job readiness, reading and writing skills.
  • Tracking student progress/ attendance and assisting the program with all required documentation;  
  • Other related tasks, as necessary.
  • This part-time position will be at an estimated salary of $38 per hour.

The Center for Family Life in Sunset Park, Brooklyn has an opening for a part time ESOL instructor. 
 
The teacher will teach up to 12 hours of classes weekly on either a morning or evening schedule. Classes run through June 2022 and are presently held online but might move to in-person in the spring. Students are adults. 
 
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Creating and customizing instructional materials (including but not limited to lesson plans, curricula, and syllabi) by building on own training and experience in order to deliver high-quality lessons for adult English Language Learners.
  • Providing online instruction by using a variety of online tools and platforms (ex. Zoom, email, Google Drive), eventually, providing in-person instruction by using own and supplied materials.
  • Assisting with outreach and recruitment for all ESOL classes offered at the Center for Family Life.
  • Assisting with registering students at the start of each cycle and completing all paperwork.
  • Assisting with assessing each student's level of ability utilizing Best Plus 2.0 to ensure appropriate placement.
  • Informally and/or formally assessing each student throughout the semester to track progress.
  • Maintaining daily student attendance records and following up with students with low attendance.
  • Assisting with students’ monthly progress updates/check-ins.
  • Collecting and maintaining student work for student portfolios.
  • Communicating with program director regarding apparent barriers to student success (e.g., child daycare needs, possible health/housing issues, etc.).
  • Coordinating with program director regarding next steps in student's progress toward achieving their goals.
  • Providing all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports.
  • Attending at least eighteen (18) hours of professional development activities in the fiscal year.
 
Requirements:
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree (B.A.), required
  • Advanced computer skills required and ability to teach online using various platforms
  • BEST Plus certification preferred
  • At least two years of experience teaching ESOL, preferred
  • Experience working with immigrant communities
  • Ability to provide services in a manner sensitive to the backgrounds and cultures of program participants
  • Bilingual Spanish, preferred
  • Ability to teach in-person, if needed

Adult Education Instructor P/T

Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI) – a nonprofit workforce development organization – seeks a dynamic individual to work as a Adult Education Instructor for the Brooklyn Networks Training Program. BWI is a nonprofit, Brooklyn-based workforce development organization that changes the lives of hundreds of jobless New Yorkers each year by offering them the skills and support they need to launch lasting careers. We seek to develop programs that counter prevailing market inequalities, especially those based on race and gender, and contribute to a broader movement for economic justice.
 
Brooklyn Networks is a free, six-week training program that helps unemployed and underemployed individuals access careers in low-voltage cabling. The course prepares graduates to obtain the industry-recognized BICSI credential, followed by job placement in voice and data cabling, security system installation, broadcast cabling, and A/V system installation.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver BICSI Level 1 Information Technology Systems (ITS) curriculum via lecture and demonstration
  • Provide trainees with technical training support, including remedial training, tutoring, and study habits and strategies
  • Develop new and/or update existing homework assignments, grade homework, and administer written exams
  • Participate in class selection and all program team meetings and discussions regarding technical skills training delivery and trainee performance and participation to ensure excellent program performance
  • Mentor, counsel, and tutor trainees as needed
  • Must be available for classroom-based technical skills training Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm for six weeks, five times a year.
  • Maintain or exceed current BICSI Level I Credential certification rate of 85%
 
Qualifications
  • No previous experience in cable installation is needed; curriculum and lesson plans will be provided
  • Have at least four years of experience delivering Adult Education to students from socioeconomically diverse and underserved communities preferred
  • Willingness to audit and observe one training cycle as part of onboarding and sit for the BICSI Level 1 Installer Exam as well as BICSI’s Train the Trainer course
  • Demonstrate an ability to teach various learning styles and accept and implement constructive feedback from program staff and students
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as a team member
  • Friendly, professional demeanor, excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Must be well-organized and thorough with excellent attention to detail
  • Motivated by BWI and Brooklyn Network’s mission to serve populations with barriers to employment
 
Compensation
$50 - $55 per hour, depending on experience.

Mercy Center seeks an ESOL Instructor/ Adult Education Counselor – Full-Time​
​
Schedule: 
40 hours per week, generally Monday – Friday, with 2 evening shifts when evening classes are in session and rotating Saturdays

Essential Functions:
 
ESOL Instructor:
  • Serves as an ESOL instructor with a focus on speaking, listening, reading, writing, as well as integration of technology in the classroom
  • Implements and customizes lesson plans for low-literacy population based on a standards-based curriculum
  • In consultation with Department staff, implements strategies designed to maintain high student retention
  • Evaluates student performance, discusses areas of improvement with students, and develops appropriate strategies to address needs
Adult Education Counselor:
  • Assess and develop Individual Service Plans for incoming students
  • Follow up to evaluate student placement, progress and attendance in class
  • Assist students in overcoming barriers to attendance or retention
  • Assist students with education, training, job and personal goals
  • Maintain records of all counseling interactions
  • Assist in the smooth delivery of classes. Support teachers with issues relating to class management, follow up with students on issues related to learning, behavior, attendance, retention or other area of concern.
  • Participate in registration and orientation
  • Attends and participates in regular staff development sessions and staff meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
 
Requirements:
  • BA and at least 4 or more years of experience in a similar role
  • CELTA certification strongly preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication skills, strong organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of ESOL technology instruction
  • Extensive experience working with an immigrant community
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish
  • COVID Vaccination Required
