ESOL 3-4 Civics Teacher – Part-Time Evenings (Brooklyn, NY

Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow is seeking a part-time ESOL instructor for high beginners/low intermediate adult learners at our 280 Wyckoff Avenue location.  The schedule is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m., to start immediately. 

Interested candidates should be available to teach for the entire length of the class cycle, be committed to social justice and have experience working with immigrant populations.  This person should be able to teach a student driven ESOL curriculum that integrates language with a focus on life skills and workplace contexts, US civics and culture, and which facilitates the student’s improvement of their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.  Candidates must be organized, creative and capable of incorporating technology to prepare language learners for today’s technological world.  This individual should also be discreet when handling students’ personal information.

Requirements: BA and experience teaching ESOL to adults and excellent computer skills. BEST Plus certification preferred. Proficiency in Spanish not required, but extremely helpful.

US Civics Instructor P/T

The YMCA of Greater New York, which serves New York City’s extraordinarily diverse population, is seeking energetic and disciplined ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) Instructors to fill immediate part-time positions.  We are looking for individuals who can teach US Civics and Citizenship in a New Americans Welcome Center (NAWC), located in the Flushing area, to students whose proficiency levels range from beginning literacy to high intermediate.  
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and diver written weekly unity and daily lesson plans, according to a subscribed curriculum.
  • Research and write lesson plans.
  • Create and facilitate activities that motivate students and promote participation.
  • Deliver lessons using effective methodology.
  • Administer pre and post tests, and other evaluative tools.
  • Track classroom attendance and utilize other student monitoring devices.
  • Track deadlines and maintain comprehensive calendar of reports and forms; fill out all appropriate forms and submit in a timely manner. 
  • Actively participate in designated meetings and special events.
Qualifications:
  • BS/BA degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of relevant experience teaching English and/or other languages. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish, French, Chinese and /or Polish preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic teaching techniques and methods and principles of teaching languages, students’ cultural background and its effect on the students’ learning process, preparing lesson, syllabus, promotion lists, and grant documents and reporting systems, conducting NYS Placement Test and preparing assessment tools.
  • Knowledge of Best Plus Testing and database is a plus.
  • Ability to determine the students’ level of English Proficiency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent hospitality skills.

The ESOL instructor should be committed to social justice and have experience working with immigrant populations. The instructor will teach a student-driven ESOL curriculum that integrates technology and authentic assessment. Candidates must be creative, organized, and discreet when handling sensitive personal information.
Requirements: BA and experience teaching ESOL to adults and excellent computer skills. BEST Plus certification preferred. Proficiency in Spanish not required, but extremely helpful.

HANAC Literacy & Immigration Program
Reports to: Program Director     
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Adhere to program mission, philosophy and goals
  • Provide a positive, respectful, student-centered learning environment
  • Respect adult learner and be aware and responsive to special needs and issues of the multi-cultural classroom.
  • Develop and re-evaluate curriculum on an on-going basis in response to students' needs educationally, psychologically  and vocationally
  • Utilize authentic material and technology
  • Track and maintain student attendance
  • Keep working folders of all students' work and maintain and update individual student files and records
  • Conference students to communicate student's progress and plan with students steps necessary to attain goals
  • Complete all required reports as requested by  the Program Manager
  • Participate in staff development  in-house and as provided by other entities
  • Collaborate with paralegal or attorney to ascertain participants'  eligibility and readiness for naturalization interview and test
  • Attend staff meetings, seminars, and conferences
  • Meet with case manager as needed to discuss student's attendance and progress
  • Plan class activities and projects on a weekly basis, and submit lesson plans on bi-weekly basis.
  • Test students using BEST Plus and assess language proficiency skills on an on-going basis.
  • Prepare and participate in special projects as requested by the Program Manager

Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in related field with minimum 3 years teaching ESL with knowledge of US history and government and/or Citizenship to adults; experience with student centered, project based classroom; an understanding of cultural differences; good interpersonal  skills experience

$34/per hour   IMMEDIATE START.  Saturdays 9 a.m to 1 p.m. in Astoria Queens.
