Adult Education Program Consultant F/T

10/5/2017

Position Summary:
The New York City school system is the largest in the country, composed of approximately 1.1 million students and 75,000+ teachers in over 1,800 schools. In February 2015, the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) created the Office of Community Schools (OCS) to develop and implement one of the pillars of Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Fariña’s education agenda.

Community Schools are schools that strategically organize resources and share leadership so that social services are integrated into the fabric of the schools, enabling them to better serve the needs of families. Community Schools stand as centers of opportunities in neighborhoods – places where families, with whatever challenges they bring to the table, can get the supports they need to make sure students come to school ready and able to learn.

Our approach is based on a growing body of evidence showing that an integrated focus on academics, health and mental health services, youth development, expanded learning opportunities, and family and community supports are critical to improving student success.

OCS currently provides support for 227 community schools. OCS develops strategies and policies to increase the capacity of schools and community partners to deliver tailored supports to improve each school, including daily extended learning time, family engagement, healthcare, and mental health supports.

The Department of Education’s OCS and Adult and Continuing Education (OACE), in partnership with the New York City Council, is expanding supports for 25 Community Schools to provide Adult Education programs.  Each program will also engage the schools Lead Community Based Organization (CBO) partner to provide social service supports for adult learners – supporting their enrollment, retention and personal growth.
